SOLVED. YA:Tie-Dye goes from hippie commune to religious commune [s]

YA from late eighties/early nineties. The boy's name is Tie-Dye and lives in a hippie commune with his mother and eventually move to a religious commune where conditions were horrible. His mother slowly becomes brainwashed. I think they try to rename him. He meets a girl who needs to be rescued - she is eventually tied to a tree (maybe?) and they try to escape. I specifically remember one scene where he is playing football with his new 'friends'. One boy is named Ezekiel and Tie says 'Hey Zeke! Toss me the ball!' and the game stops and they have to pull him aside and tell him that nicknames are forbidden!
The cover of the book has a boy holding a girl back behind him and they are in a forest (if this helps!)
The author is a woman. One of her names starts with a 'C'. The title I believe is 'The' something.
