Michael A (Greylikestorms) | 14 comments I'm beyond excited for the release of season 1 of Game of Thrones next week. I loved the books from the moment I first started reading GoT, and I've been following the production reports of the tv series for ages now.
We didn't want to get HBO/cable just for Game of Thrones, and I made the deliberate choice not to pirate the series, so literally all I've seen of it have been the teasers and trailers. I'm super-stoked to finally get to see all of it next week once the dvd set reaches my grubby hands.
Anyone else in the same boat?

Nick (whyzen) | 1295 comments Screw DVD. I've got the bluray's coming. HI-DEF blood, guts, betrayal, beheading, and bewbies.

terpkristin | 4407 comments I actually ordered both the DVD and the Blu-Ray. DVD will let me put it onto some devices and let my parents watch if they like, I'll keep the Blu-Ray at home for uber viewing pleasure. I'm actually making an impromptu trip to Cleveland on Saturday and I was thinking I'd get a lot of reading done (flying there via Atlanta....I live in Virginia, so it's a bit of a detour) and driving back), but now I'm not so sure.

Tina (javabird) | 765 comments I haven't seen it yet-- but I'm number 284 on the list of holds for the DVD at my local library :)

Exactly the same boat except, yes, Blu-Ray FTW. I was actually prepared to do pay-per-view for the first time ever just to see the series but of course they didn't actually offer it that way and as you said, I didn't want to spend the money for HBO for just the one series.

Michael A (Greylikestorms) | 14 comments So my copy shipped out today, but apparently it's being delivered by Lazership. If anyone has any experience with them, they know what I mean when I say that Lazership is a horrible company that gives really crappy service. We've had several packages simply go missing when they were supposed to be delivered by Lazership. My box set is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, but with that company it's a crapshoot as to whether stuff will actually arrive on time.
My wife ordered a book a few weeks ago, and Lazership listed it as "delivered". It never arrived, and she had to call Amazon customer support to have another copy sent out.
Needless to say, if my stuff gets lost I will be furious, and Amazon will hear about it.

terpkristin | 4407 comments Mine will also come via Lasership. I haven't had any bad experiences with them...knock on wood...

Michael A (Greylikestorms) | 14 comments Mine arrived earlier this afternoon, thankfully. Hoping to watch the first episode with my wife when she gets home from work later tonight.

Trike | 11222 comments What does the first season cover? Is it just the first book, or are they compressing stuff the way True Blood and Walking Dead are?

message 13: by Michael (new)

Michael A (Greylikestorms) | 14 comments The first season, from everything I've read, covers only book 1, although part of the "captured Jamie" storyline from book 2 makes it in as well.
I personally think that in seasons 2 and 3 of the show they'll be compressing more stuff into each season... but that's a guess that's completely unsubstantiated.

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2669 comments What's going to happen when they reach season 5? By that time GRRM might have finished book 6, but at that point they will have caught up and he will only have 1 year to finish book 7 :)

terpkristin | 4407 comments Mine's here! But I'm still doing work. :( No GoT for me for now.

Michael A (Greylikestorms) | 14 comments As much as I hate to say it, I don't think we'll see a 4th or 5th season of Game of Thrones. HBO has a bad habit of canceling excellent series after only a few seasons. Deadwood comes to mind...

Honestly, I'll be happy if we get 3 full seasons. A 4th would make me dance in joy...

And Rome and Carnivale and . . . Unfortunately, it seems like they still haven't figured out how to do one of these really expensive series and make the revenue they were expecting.

i.e. a KAGILLION DOLLARS + 1

message 19: by Trike (new)

Trike | 11222 comments Revenue for GoT doesn't seem to be a problem. Apparently the foreign rights netted them a profit before it ever aired. DVD sales and new subscribers were the icing on the cake.

message 20: by Michael (new)

Michael A (Greylikestorms) | 14 comments I feel like if HBO really wanted to profit, they could release each new episode a day or two after it airs on HBO - put it on iTunes and Amazon at $4.99 each. That way the non-HBO subscribers could get it as well, and don't need to pirate. Then, right before the next season, release a fancy box set with a price point of $75 that has a bajillion extra features on it. Cue more profit. $$$$$

Hell, I'd pay $5/week if I had the option to - that's the price of a couple cheap coffees.

message 21: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 4407 comments So after working an insane day yesterday and finally getting home/done with work at around 9, I thought I'd relax by watching the first episode. Then work called at 9:45 and I ended up doing more work until midnight.

Then I couldn't fall asleep but didn't want to leave my bedroom, so couldn't watch. I finally fell asleep at around 3, up at 6. I just got home from work (now it's 7), and I really want to watch but I think I'm going to fall asleep!

At least I'm doing some traveling this weekend, so I'll put a couple episodes onto my Kindle Fire and watch them that way.

message 22: by Michael (new)

Michael A (Greylikestorms) | 14 comments We watched 7 episodes today, and holy crap was it worth it. SO GOOD. Saw the first ep last night at 11, and watched to episode 8 today. They did the books justice, and even with the changes I loved it.

running_target (running_t4rg3t) I'm seeing it for the first time too. Good stuff, although I'm not especially pleased with the HDness of the Blurays. Is it even 1080? I'll have to check.
