20.7. Shorter is Sweeter: Jayalalita's Task - Happy Rama Navami!
Randi wrote: "I was looking at Entwined or The Red Pyramid or The Sea of Monsters for this one & just wanted to check. :)"Both of those work great!
April wrote: "Would The Wind Done Gone: A Novel work? It is a retelling of Gone with the Wind.or Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast. Guess the name says it all..."
Beauty works, but The Wind Done Gone isn't quite what I had in mind, being a retelling of a historical novel, which has no mythic elements. Retellings of books such as The Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland work because they contain concepts similar to classic tales of magic, and are like modern fairy tales. I apologize!
Mrs.soule wrote: "Does The Crimson Fairy Book work for this task? It's a collection of fairy tales."Yes, it works, and I love Andrew Lang's Fairy Books!
I'd like to read Deerskin, a retelling of the fairytale "Donkey Skin" by Charles Perrault. Is that OK?
mstan wrote: "I'd like to read Deerskin, a retelling of the fairytale "Donkey Skin" by Charles Perrault. Is that OK?"Yes, it certainly is!
How about Princess of the Midnight Ball - it appears to be a retelling of a Grimm's fairy tale, The 12 Dancing Princesses.
My daughter has been trying to get me to read these graphic novels, will they count? I would have to read more than one volume to get the appropriate page count.Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile

Those work!
Jayalalita wrote: "April wrote: "What about The Serpent's Shadow?"Yes!"
Wonderful! I just love Rick Riordan's books and love fitting books that I want to read now in the challenges!
Does Stardust work? It's on the GoodReads fairy tale list and I know its fantasy but I don't know much else about it.
Lahni wrote: "Does Stardust work? It's on the GoodReads fairy tale list and I know its fantasy but I don't know much else about it."It is written much like a fairy tale, and contains enough mythic figures and magic pulled from legend that it works!
This was something I picked up a few weeks ago - Sisters Red. It appears to be a retelling of Red Riding Hood.
Would this one fit:The Snow Child
one of the reviews says:
"it breathes new life into an old Russian children's tale "
though I'm not familiar enough with Russian children's tales to be able to tell which one -- the book's description says:
"...during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone--but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl ..."

Deedee, there is a Russian tale of a snow child. I don't know the official title, but I remember the story and it seems to fit. Of course, I'm not the task creator for this one, so this isn't official.
Rebecca wrote: "This was something I picked up a few weeks ago - Sisters Red. It appears to be a retelling of Red Riding Hood."That one works!

Reading the reviews, it sounds like it maintains the fairy tale's feel, and has a magical touch, so it works!
Beth NC wrote: "Will Hammered work for this? It is about Thor"Yes! I haven't heard of that series before -- looks amusing!

It is a very interesting series.....
Want to see if The Darkest Seductionwould work? Some of the characters are based on the Greek gods, Cronus and Rheas? Thanks

Thanks! I'm reading it now and it definately fits. About a third of the way through the novel, the character reads the myth in a book. It's a Russian Myth named "The Snow Maiden" and it is apparently as well-known in Russia as "Snow White" is in English-speaking countries. And .... the character wonders .... is that myth coming to life right now? stay tuned!!!!
This task fits perfectly with the next book in my quest to read the Newberry winners: Tales From Silver Lands, a collection of folk tales from South America.BTW, I read Ramayana last year, and thought it was fascinating. Great task!

Yes, that works!

I may have to read that one; I've heard good things about it, and it sounds like it has a dreamy feel.

Lovely! There are so many colorful stories all over the world, and they provide a little flavor when existence can get a bit humdrum on its own. It's the old stories told long ago which make the stories told today possible!
Hi -- I'm on a 'fantasy diet' this quarter -- so no fantasy for me. Can I read a nonfiction book about the myths of Ireland? The Myths, Legends, and Lore of Ireland: 101 Things You Didn't Know about the Emerald Isle
Becky wrote: "Hi -- I'm on a 'fantasy diet' this quarter -- so no fantasy for me. Can I read a nonfiction book about the myths of Ireland? [book:The Myths, Legends, and Lore of Ireland: 101 Things You Didn't Kn..."Certainly!
Could I use Preludes and Nocturnes? The back of my edition says "...the series is a rich blend of modern and ancient mythology into which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven."

It appears to have elements in the plot and characters that work, so yes!
Jayalalita wrote: Hehe, I love that we live in a time when books like this are written. I am so very fond of stories that take something familiar and make it naughty!
Enchanted: Erotic Bedtime Stories for Women
should definitely work for this task, then...
With a unique and decidedly adult twist on thirteen classic fairy tales, Nancy Madore intrigues and arouses with her titillating, sizzling anthology of erotic stories guaranteed to keep you up late into the night.
You'll never look at fairy tales the same way again!
