Sera I was unaware that Gibson had decided to remarry even though it had been mentioned to him by the doctor and by Hamley to Molly. It wasn't in the first 8 chapters of my book.

Like Hardy, I am now becoming a Gaskell fan.

Reina Williams I'm running behind in my reading but am in Chapter Nine now. Interesting discussion...I think Gaskell foreshadows a future relationship in the scenes where young Molly goes to the Towers for the day and Mrs. K. breaks her promise to wake her...Gaskell's narrative style is enjoyable--a tiny bit rambling and conversational but the more I read the more I realize she has a definite hold on the events and characters. I am very curious to find out more about the Hamleys and what will happen to Molly. I also like her character--in fact I find almost all the characters appealing, save perhaps some of the inhabitants of the Towers. Like some of you, Gaskell has been on my to-read list for many years, and I appreciate getting a boost to finally read her. Once I finish, I'm going to reward myself by watching the miniseries! :)

Marialyce Very true, Reina, about Mrs K. She is very much concerned with things that effect her personally and Molly at this point is of little concern to her. You will definitely see more of her nature as you continue. As we have mentioned, Gaskell can really introduce and make you know her characters quite well, and I do think this is one of the charms of her writing.

Don't worry, you are not running behind. This book discussion is ongoing. Glad you like what you have read so far.

Reina Williams Thanks, Marialyce. :) I just meant I have a bunch of other books to read and have taken longer to read this than planned. Yes, Gaskell is deft at characterization. I look forward to reading more after finishing this one. Especially North and South, which is one of the few I watched the movie before reading the book.
