6) I feel so bad for Alice. We still only know the young version of Alice. What do you think of her so far? I thought it might be fun to compare her to the old Alice once we find out about her. I'm guessing that will be somewhere in the future.

I really want to know about past, but more present Alice. How she was during all these things she is know re-learning.

7) I keep thinking someone should have told Elisabeth to not spring too much on Alice at once. I'm waiting for Alice to break down in tears. What an emotional rollercoaster. Do you think her sister should fill her in on what events led to the divorce proceedings? I'm getting a little teary eyed myself.

I think Elisabeth is waiting for her memory to come back. I wouldn't want to be the one to tell her everything right now in case she does remember later. Can you imagine being told everything over again even though you "know" it.

8)What did you think of Alice's husband's phone call? We don't yet know his side of the story or, for that matter, Alice's. What do you think happened?

I thought he was a little harsh. I understand something is going on between you two, but did you really have to anser the phone that way. Gosh!

9) Three children, two weddings, and a divorce. Wow.

10) Sounds like Elizabeth is the one who had the miscarriage. So sad.

Yes, I think so. I'm actually going as far to think that Elisabeth is infertile. Which is one of the reasons she is seeing a therapist. Every time the subject of the kids and pregnancy comes up Elisabeth gets all bothered again.

11) I keep thinking it's strange Alice didn't think Jane looked older. I guess it all depends on how much a person changes?

She did at one point, but not to the extent of the others she has re-met so far. Maybe Jane was one of those that have always looked old so, therefore she doesn't look as old as everyone else now?

6) I feel so bad for Alice. We still only know the young version of Alice. What do you think of her so far? I thought it might be fun to compare her to the old Alice once we find out about her. I'm guessing that will be somewhere in the future.

I like the younger Alice a lot. She seems to care about the people around her a lot and it sounds like she spent a lot of time with them. I am thinking that I won't care for the older Alice very much.

It almost sounds like Elizabeth doesn't know much about her divorce. I don't think it really matters much when she finds out about things. It would all still be a shock to her no matter what. I think it would prolong all of the pain she is experiencing if they tell her little by little.

8)What did you think of Alice's husband's phone call? We don't yet know his side of the story or, for that matter, Alice's. What do you think happened?

I am not sure what has happened, but I think it depends on what was done by both parties as to how I feel about how he answered the phone. I don't think it was harsh if Alice cheated on him or something. I would feel the same way. Especially if it is that fresh.

9) Three children, two weddings, and a divorce. Wow.

10) Sounds like Elizabeth is the one who had the miscarriage. So sad.

I think so too, and I think that her and her husband are having fertility problems.

11) I keep thinking it's strange Alice didn't think Jane looked older. I guess it all depends on how much a person changes?

It seems like she noticed the differences, but I think she was still kind of having problems with her lucidness at that point. She had just woken up from her passing out.

Sashana I finished the reading but the questions will be posted late because I'm going to the mall (right now) and don't know what time I'll be back.

Sashana So I was supposed to meet up with my friends to go to the mall. I realized that I was going to miss my bus and started running. Big mistake! One of my shoes came off while I was running and I tripped. Some guy literally had to peel me off the sidewalk and this lady who I didn't know had to bring me home because I was in so much pain. I know I'm not supposed to get in the car with strangers but it was either that or stay keeled over on the sidewalk. So she took me home (god bless her soul) and now I'm in the doctors office waiting for him to look at my ankle and listening to my dad give me a speech about running after buses. Does anyone want to do today's questions? I can do them after I get home from the doctor's office but it'll take a while.

Hope everything is alright!

Sashana Thanks, LK. My stepmother wanted to pop my ankle back into place but I was like no way Jose. I'm surprised by how kind those strangers were.

Tabitha I just got the book today. I am going to start reading it now.

Sashana Welcome aborad, Tabitha!

Okay y'all I took a nap now I'm going to skim the chapters and write the questions. Should be up in an hour.

Sashana Questions for Chapter 10-13

12. "I don't remember. I don't remember. I won't remember."
Do you think Alice could be unconsciously (or maybe even consciously) blocking her memories? That little mantra she said to herself was strange.

13. Elisabeth and Alice are not as close as they once were. Do you think this is because Elisabeth is unable to have children. Or does Elisabeth's bitterness/anger surpass that?

14. I think it's interesting that Elisabeth and Frannie are also narrators. Why do you think the author does this? Whose story are you enjoying more -- Fran's or Elisabeth's? Why?

15. Gina has been mentioned a few times; often secretively and sometimes with contempt, any theories/ideas on who she might be?

Inkeri 12. "I don't remember. I don't remember. I won't remember."
Do you think Alice could be unconsciously (or maybe even consciously) blocking her memories? That little mantra she said to herself was strange.

I thought about this too. I figured this older Alice wasn't really happy and the pump in her head made her brain go back to a time when she was really happy. Our mind works in mysterious ways.

13. Elisabeth and Alice are not as close as they once were. Do you think this is because Elisabeth is unable to have children. Or does Elisabeth's bitterness/anger surpass that?

While reading these chapters I thought, why Elizabeth hadn't asked Alice to be a surrogate for her baby. Assuming they were really close in the past... Maybe they'd be able to have a baby that way. Or maybe she did ask but Alice didn't want to do it?

14. I think it's interesting that Elisabeth and Frannie are also narrators. Why do you think the author does this? Whose story are you enjoying more -- Fran's or Elisabeth's? Why?

I like Frannie's story a lot. It feels so warm and familiar - easy to relate to for some reason. I think the author wants to give the reader other perspectives on the story and I love the way it's written. At the same time we get to know Elizabeth and Frannie better as well. The way Elizabeth is writing "letters" to her doctor and Fran is writing a blog, it actually reveals a lot of them to the reader, and I believe that's exactly what the author intends.

15. Gina has been mentioned a few times; often secretively and sometimes with contempt, any theories/ideas on who she might be?

My first thought was that she must be Nick's new girlfriend. But she could be something else... I don't know.

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Questions for Chapter 10-13

12. "I don't remember. I don't remember. I won't remember."
Do you think Alice could be unconsciously (or maybe even consciously) blocking her memories? That little mantra she said to herself was strange.
I think that she is blocking the memories she is starting to remember because they are too painful. She said the mantra right after she remembered the crying in the shower. I don't think she wants to remember.

13. Elisabeth and Alice are not as close as they once were. Do you think this is because Elisabeth is unable to have children. Or does Elisabeth's bitterness/anger surpass that?
I think it is because Alice didn't know how to comfort her, not to mention it sounds like Alice has her own problems at home. I think it was a slow growing apart due to Alice changing and becoming super mom.

14. I think it's interesting that Elisabeth and Frannie are also narrators. Why do you think the author does this? Whose story are you enjoying more -- Fran's or Elisabeth's? Why?
I like hearing all three points of view. You get the sadness from Elisabeth, which I think feels more real because of her infertility ordeal. I don't think I would be able to feel the pain of the character as much if it was coming from Alice. I love the warmth and sweetness that we get from Frannie, and I really connect with Alice's old self the way Alice is telling the story. I think the way the book is written adds so much to the story.

15. Gina has been mentioned a few times; often secretively and sometimes with contempt, any theories/ideas on who she might be?
I think Nick had an affair with her but thats just me.

Side Note Did anyone else really love the story about how they purchased the house? I loved that scene the most so far.

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Questions for Chapter 10-13

12. "I don't remember. I don't remember. I won't remember."
Do you think Alice could be unconsciously (or maybe even consciously) blocking her memories? That little mantra she said to herself was strange.

I am thinking the same thing, that she does not like the woman she has become...

13. Elisabeth and Alice are not as close as they once were. Do you think this is because Elisabeth is unable to have children. Or does Elisabeth's bitterness/anger surpass that?

Probably it is painful for Elizabeth to be around Alice's children when she has so many problems getting her own. Also, seems like new Alice is a know-it-all so maybe she is pestering Elizabeth with advices...

14. I think it's interesting that Elisabeth and Frannie are also narrators. Why do you think the author does this? Whose story are you enjoying more -- Fran's or Elisabeth's? Why?

I like that we have more narrators. It gives us more objective view of the story. Fran's stories are more warm, but from Elizabeth we usually find out more useful information.

15. Gina has been mentioned a few times; often secretively and sometimes with contempt, any theories/ideas on who she might be?

I have a feeling, Gina is guilty for Alice's transformation. I don't know what was her part in Alice's and Nick's life. I think that writer will not go for usual and make Gina Nick's girlfriend, probably something more complex...

Tabitha Questions for Chapters 1 - 4

1) Can you imagine waking up and 10 years of your life are gone? There was an actual case where a woman went into a coma and woke up years later (did a Rip Van Winkle). It boggles the mind.
-I can’t imagine it. If I woke up 10 years from now and only remembered my life up to this point I would want to know some things, like did I go to college and what is my job.

2) What do you think of how she's handling the fact she can't remember 10 years of her life?
-So far Alice seems very calm about it. I don’t think I would be that calm. Even when she realizes that the baby she was carrying is now 10 years old and she missed his whole life, she is calm.

3) Do you think the doctors could have handled things better?
-Yes. They seem calm also. If I were Alice’s doctor I would be worried that she is missing 10 years of memories. They seem to not care about her.

4) First impressions of Jane? Should she have stayed with her?
-Right now I don’t like Jane. I think Jane should have gone with Alice, or at least went to the hospital in her own car. If Alice was my friend I would want to be with her.

5) First impressions of Elisabeth?
-I don’t like her either. She doesn’t seem to care about her own sister. She seems very greedy. She knows that the point of staying at her seminar thing is to get money. She would rather do that than be with her sister who has a head injury. But at one point she started to care a little.

My Thoughts So Far-I don’t really like any of the characters except Alice and the paramedic George Clooney look-a-like.

Tabitha Questions for Chapters 5 - 9

6) I feel so bad for Alice. We still only know the young version of Alice. What do you think of her so far? I thought it might be fun to compare her to the old Alice once we find out about her. I'm guessing that will be somewhere in the future.
-I like her. I think she is sweet. She was worried that her older self wasn’t nice.

-I don’t think so, only because I don’t think the sister knows enough about it for it to make sense.

8) What did you think of Alice's husband's phone call? We don't yet know his side of the story or, for that matter, Alice's. What do you think happened?
-My jaw dropped. They were so in love before. It was funny how Alice thought that she wanted to tell Nick about the guy that yelled at her like that, even thought it was him. I thought it was appalling. Since Alice had never been appalled before (that she can remember), she should be now. I am not sure what happened. After her mother mentioned Roger all my thoughts went to believing it was all their fault but now I’m not so sure.

9) Three children, two weddings, and a divorce. Wow.
-I know. It is crazy. She missed a lot. She didn’t miss it, but she doesn’t remember it. I thought it was funny how she kept telling herself that if those things had happened she would remember them.

10) Sounds like Elizabeth is the one who had the miscarriage. So sad.
-I’m not sure just yet. I am trying to figure out who Gina is.

11) I keep thinking it’s strange Alice didn't think Jane looked older. I guess it all depends on how much a person changes?
-She did describe her as different, but I don’t think my brain would go to 10 years have passed and I don’t remember them, that is why you like different.

My Thoughts So Far-If I was still going on with the divorce (even though I wouldn’t want to) I would fire Jane and get somebody else. She was pretty much making fun of Alice after she hit her head.

Sashana Laura wrote: "Side note..."

The Imposible Dreamlist they had for their house reminds me of the Dream Home board people have on Pinterest. I agree, it was a sweet story.

Sashana Questions for Chapters 14 - 17

16. Looks like we were right about Alice suppressing her memories: "It had seemed like she was about to fall head first into all her memories but then she'd deliberately resisted it..."

17. "Alice knew that Frannie had lost a boyfriend during the Second World War..."
Do you think it's possible that Phil, the recipient of Frannie's letters, could be dead? Or do you think Elisabeth's theory that Phil is married makes more sense?

18. I feel devastated for Elisabeth. I know dealing with infertility was rough but I didn't realize how much so.  Why do you think she keeps putting herself through failed IVF's instead of adopting?

19. Everyone obviously knew who Gina was but no one was forthcoming. Do you think Alice's family should withhold painful/awkward memories or should they rip it off like a band aid and tell her everything at once? Explain your position.

20. Anyone surprised at how normal Dominick seems to be? I kind of expected him to be more suave.

21. He [Ben] said, "I've been thinking."
I told him so had I, but he could go first. He said he'd been thinking abohatehat Alice had said last week and he'd decided she was one hundred percent right."

Do you think Ben was referring to the IVF treatments or was he referring to something else altogether?

22. Whoa! Gina is dead? I didn't see that one coming!

Favorite quotes from this section

1. She has only been through one IVF cycle, but she's already energetically bitter about infertility. She makes me realize I'm even jaded about being jaded.

2. "Well, she'd going to have to go back to the doctor. There's something not right here. Look at her. It's obvious."
"I doubt they can just transplant her memories back in her head," said Roger.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Roger, I didn't realize you had experience as a neurosurgeon..."

3. He pressed his thumb in between her eyebrows. What was he doing? Was it some sort of weird middle-aged-people ritual? Was she meant to do it back to him?

Have a missed a chapter? Phil who? I can't remember reading about any Phil or Elizabeth's theories. And what letters? (Have I hit my head..?) I might have been a bit sleepy while reading the chapters though...

18. I feel devastated for Elisabeth. I know dealing with infertility was rough but I didn't realize how much so. Why do you think she keeps putting herself through failed IVF's instead of adopting?

I was thinking the same thing - why don't they just adopt? I actually had a good discussion about infertility with a friend of mine a few weeks ago. She has been through IVF treatments too and also considered adopting with her husband. They had pretty good reasons for not to adopt, so maybe Elizabeth and Ben has their reasons too.

19. Everyone obviously knew who Gina was but no one was forthcoming. Do you think Alice's family should withhold painful/awkward memories or should they rip it off like a band aid and tell her everything at once? Explain your position.

I'm starting to think that everyone just thinks her memory will be back any minute and they're not that willing to tell her things she'll remember in a flash. I really don't know if they should or shouldn't tell her things. It would have been nice to know about a boyfriend perhaps...

20. Anyone surprised at how normal Dominick seems to be? I kind of expected him to be more suave.

I like Dominick. I wonder if Dominick is a better man for Alice after all. Could be that Nick has also changed and perhaps Alice just doesn't love him anymore.

21. He [Ben] said, "I've been thinking."
I told him so had I, but he could go first. He said he'd been thinking abohatehat Alice had said last week and he'd decided she was one hundred percent right."

I think whatever Ben was referring to probably has something to do with the IVF treatments or infertility.

22. Whoa! Gina is dead? I didn't see that one coming!
HUGE surprise!

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Questions for Chapters 14 - 17

16. Looks like we were right about Alice suppressing her memories: "It had seemed like she was about to fall head first into all her memories but then she'd deliberately resisted it..."

Maybe she is afraid what she will remember. There were a lot of tough moments, I think. Breaking up of marriage is never easy.

17. "Alice knew that Frannie had lost a boyfriend during the Second World War..."
Do you think it's possible that Phil, the recipient of Frannie's letters, could be dead? Or do you think Elisabeth's theory that Phil is married makes more sense?

I did not think of that, but I more like the idea that Phil is her long lost boyfriend.

18. I feel devastated for Elisabeth. I know dealing with infertility was rough but I didn't realize how much so. Why do you think she keeps putting herself through failed IVF's instead of adopting?

I don't think adopting is that easy. Lots of paperwork and I think you need good income, house etc.

19. Everyone obviously knew who Gina was but no one was forthcoming. Do you think Alice's family should withhold painful/awkward memories or should they rip it off like a band aid and tell her everything at once? Explain your position.

I vote for telling everything. Maybe it would be painful but I think it would help her remember faster. And also it would help Alice to not get into awkward situations...

20. Anyone surprised at how normal Dominick seems to be? I kind of expected him to be more suave.

Me to. He is so homey. I like him. :)

21. He [Ben] said, "I've been thinking."

Do you think Ben was referring to the IVF treatments or was he referring to something else altogether?

Since, I have read one chapter more, I know the answer. ;)

22. Whoa! Gina is dead? I didn't see that one coming!

Me neither. Total surprise.

Sashana @ Dragana

#18: Yeah, but at $2k per person for her seminars she can't be hurting for money. And it's a pity that adoption has to be so expensive and drawn out.

#21: You just couldn't help yourself could you? Can't say I blame you, I read ahead too ;)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Questions for Chapters 18-22

1.) So, we finally learn a little about the divorce. I can't believe Gina and Alice were such good friends that it would help ruin a marriage. Have you ever known someone like that?

2.) Alice must have been one mean, mean person for Nick to resent her so much. It's really sad!

3.) Their kids are just crazy! They defintitely make me laugh though. Especially Tom and Olivia!

4.) Elisabeth and Ben seemed to have a huge misunderstanding. Seems like infertility is not their own problem. Communication too! What did you think about the miscommunication about adoption? Opportunity lost?

5.) Is Elisabeth just being bitter in her letter to Jeremy (her therapist) or do you really think she has decided that she wouldn't be a good mother?

6.) Going back to Gina and Alice... Alice's boyfriend, Dominick says that Alice and Nick were having "sexual issues", but got too embarrassed to continue. With Alice's comment later on wondering about having a lesbian affair and Dominick's embarrassment...could it be true?

7.) It really makes me sad the more I learn about Alice's "old" and "new" life. Could you imagine learning about how mean and rough you had been?

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Answers for Chapters 18-22

1.) So, we finally learn a little about the divorce. I can't believe Gina and Alice were such good friends that it would help ruin a marriage. Have you ever known someone like that?

I've never know someone's marriage to fall apart because of a friendship. However, I assume it could happen based on the circumstances. I would hope it wouldn't be the only reason though.

2.) Alice must have been one mean, mean person for Nick to resent her so much. It's really sad!

3.) Their kids are just crazy! They defintitely make me laugh though. Especially Tom and Olivia!

Olivia was so cute taking Alice's temperature and I loved all of Tom's comments and actions. Sticking out his stomach to look malnourished, giving Elisbeth a "lie detector test", talking about the huge wave, and trying to stay with his parents outside by asking how many bricks were on the house. He would definitely wear me out. Lol.

4.) Elisabeth and Ben seemed to have a huge misunderstanding. Seems like infertility is not their own problem. Communication too! What did you think about the miscommunication about adoption? Opportunity lost?

It could have been a lost opportunity if that is really the reason they never adopted. Truthfully taking about your feelings is a must. No matter if it makes the other uncomfortable or not. You have to take the risk and come to a mutual decision.

5.) Is Elisabeth just being bitter in her letter to Jeremy (her therapist) or do you really think she has decided that she wouldn't be a good mother?

I think it is a little bit of both maybe. Sometimes I think people try to hard with other people's kids. But, if she was really that bored and frustrated while watching Olivia than maybe Elisabeth is right and she shouldn't be a mother.

6.) Going back to Gina and Alice... Alice's boyfriend, Dominick says that Alice and Nick were having "sexual issues", but got too embarrassed to continue. With Alice's comment later on wondering about having a lesbian affair and Dominick's embarrassment...could it be true?

It would be an interesting twist to the story and I don't know if I'm ready for something like that, but it could/could have happened!

7.) It really makes me sad the more I learn about Alice's "old" and "new" life. Could you imagine learning about how mean and rough you had been?

I think it would be just devastating. If I were to have amnesia, or be deliberately repressing memories, and found out how mean I was especially to my husband that I had loved for ever I would feel so bad. I mean how low can you go?!

16. Looks like we were right about Alice suppressing her memories: "It had seemed like she was about to fall head first into all her memories but then she'd deliberately resisted it..."
Who could blame her. It sounds like her life has gotten worse not better.

17. "Alice knew that Frannie had lost a boyfriend during the Second World War..."
Do you think it's possible that Phil, the recipient of Frannie's letters, could be dead? Or do you think Elisabeth's theory that Phil is married makes more sense?
I was thinking from the beginning that it was her dead husband until they mentioned she had never been married. I am betting its the WWII boyfriend.

18. I feel devastated for Elisabeth. I know dealing with infertility was rough but I didn't realize how much so. Why do you think she keeps putting herself through failed IVF's instead of adopting?
I know a few people who have adopted. They say it was an extremely lengthy process, not to mention expensive and EXTREMELY hard to get a baby. Well unless you adopt from overseas.

19. Everyone obviously knew who Gina was but no one was forthcoming. Do you think Alice's family should withhold painful/awkward memories or should they rip it off like a band aid and tell her everything at once? Explain your position.
I think they should have just told her. It is obviously not helping her situation any by keeping it from her. I think they are trying to safeguard her but it isn't really working.

20. Anyone surprised at how normal Dominick seems to be? I kind of expected him to be more suave.
I like him okay but at the same time, I am really hoping that Nick and Alice work out their problems. I hate divorce, it hurts everyone and has lasting effects.

21. He [Ben] said, "I've been thinking."
I told him so had I, but he could go first. He said he'd been thinking about what Alice had said last week and he'd decided she was one hundred percent right."
Do you think Ben was referring to the IVF treatments or was he referring to something else altogether?
I guess it would have something to do with IVF, no idea what else it would have to do with.

22. Whoa! Gina is dead? I didn't see that one coming!
I had my suspicions because of the way everyone was talking about her. I also noticed how Alice would have a reaction every time she was at that particular intersection. Maybe she saw it happen?(I am assuming it is a car accident?)

Questions for Chapter 10-13

12. "I don't remember. I don't remember. I won't remember."
Do you think Alice could be unconsciously (or maybe even consciously) blocking her memories? That little mantra she said to herself was strange.

I think Alice just doesn't want to remember because she's afraid of everything that has changed and scared that if she remembers it will become a reality. I don't think she's blocking it out, it's just how it happened.

13. Elisabeth and Alice are not as close as they once were. Do you think this is because Elisabeth is unable to have children. Or does Elisabeth's bitterness/anger surpass that?

It sounds like a little of both. It seems that Alice has completely changed from what she once was which may have caused the seperation between sisters. It could also be jealousy on Elisabeth's part as she was never able to have kids. It could be too much to see Alice happy with 3 children.

14. I think it's interesting that Elisabeth and Frannie are also narrators. Why do you think the author does this? Whose story are you enjoying more -- Fran's or Elisabeth's? Why?

It makes sense that they would have other narrators, otherwise we'd never get the full story. Since Alice can't remember anything we have to get her story from others. Elisabeth's story intrigues me. She seems to have a lot of issues and angst.

15. Gina has been mentioned a few times; often secretively and sometimes with contempt, any theories/ideas on who she might be?

My guess is that she's Alice's best friend and somehow caused the changes in Alice through the years turning her into someone else. Maybe she was a bad influence?

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Questions for Chapters 18-22

23.) So, we finally learn a little about the divorce. I can't believe Gina and Alice were such good friends that it would help ruin a marriage. Have you ever known someone like that?
Its hard for me to imagine too. It had to be more than just Gina though. It sounds like they stopped communicating with each other.

24.) Alice must have been one mean, mean person for Nick to resent her so much. It's really sad!
It sounds like she may have blamed Nick for a lot of their problems when it sounds like it is both of their faults.

25.) Their kids are just crazy! They defintitely make me laugh though. Especially Tom and Olivia!
The kids are definitely rambunctious. I think Olivia is adorable. The whole scene with her acting like the nurse was adorable. Tom sounds like a typical young boy, always hungry and wants food NOW, lol. Madison seems to be the most annoying out of the group, very much the sullen teenager.

26.) Elisabeth and Ben seemed to have a huge misunderstanding. Seems like infertility is not their own problem. Communication too! What did you think about the miscommunication about adoption? Opportunity lost?
I think that Elisabeth is being a tad unreasonable about the adoption thing. I understand about being upset and having a tough time with everything but she just seems unhappy with every option she has. I think bitterness has settled in.

27.) Is Elisabeth just being bitter in her letter to Jeremy (her therapist) or do you really think she has decided that she wouldn't be a good mother?
I think she is just being bitter, but then again, I have never been through something like that before so who knows the heartache that she is going through.

28.) Going back to Gina and Alice... Alice's boyfriend, Dominick says that Alice and Nick were having "sexual issues", but got too embarrassed to continue. With Alice's comment later on wondering about having a lesbian affair and Dominick's embarrassment...could it be true?
I doubt it. I think it all boiled down to exhaustion. It sounds like they are both so busy that they lost all time for each other.

29.) It really makes me sad the more I learn about Alice's "old" and "new" life. Could you imagine learning about how mean and rough you had been?
It would devastate me as well if I found out that I had turned into a mean person. I hope that she changes her attitude and becomes a little more forgiving and less uptight.

I am trying to follow the amount of pages, but somehow I am either late or ahead. Since I am mostly ahead of you for this book, seems that I like her. :)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Questions for Chapters 18-22

1.) So, we finally learn a little about the divorce. I can't believe Gina and Alice were such good friends that it would help ruin a marriage. Have you ever known someone like that?

I met a couple of people like that, but usually they are single. They tend to give negative context to every action some person does....

2.) Alice must have been one mean, mean person for Nick to resent her so much. It's really sad!

Maybe she was mean, but I cannot believe it was all one-sided. It tales two people for an argument...

3.) Their kids are just crazy! They defintitely make me laugh though. Especially Tom and Olivia!

I LOVE their kids. They really made the book more interesting.

4.) Elisabeth and Ben seemed to have a huge misunderstanding. Seems like infertility is not their own problem. Communication too! What did you think about the miscommunication about adoption? Opportunity lost?

Seems like they did not want to talk about a painful subject... I am sorry they had a such a tough time, if they talked, maybe they would have fixed their problems sooner....

5.) Is Elisabeth just being bitter in her letter to Jeremy (her therapist) or do you really think she has decided that she wouldn't be a good mother?

Probably just being bitter. You never know until you try. :)

6.) Going back to Gina and Alice... Alice's boyfriend, Dominick says that Alice and Nick were having "sexual issues", but got too embarrassed to continue. With Alice's comment later on wondering about having a lesbian affair and Dominick's embarrassment...could it be true?

I don't think so. Probably something more common. Maybe Nick was too tired from work...

7.) It really makes me sad the more I learn about Alice's "old" and "new" life. Could you imagine learning about how mean and rough you had been?

Yeah it is really sad how such a laid-back fun-loving, positive and relaxed person has turned into tense, bitter woman....

Sashana Rachel, let me know for sure if you're doing today's DQs. I know you said maybe.

Inkeri Answers for Chapters 18-22

1.) So, we finally learn a little about the divorce. I can't believe Gina and Alice were such good friends that it would help ruin a marriage. Have you ever known someone like that?

No, I have never known someone like that. But it's not that hard to believe. You might be such good friends and enjoy each others company perhaps a bit too much. It doesn't even have to be sexual, but some friendships could be so time consuming that your husband can't take it anymore.

2.) Alice must have been one mean, mean person for Nick to resent her so much. It's really sad!

I think so too.

3.) Their kids are just crazy! They defintitely make me laugh though. Especially Tom and Olivia!

I adore Tom and Olivia. They are just so funny. :)

4.) Elisabeth and Ben seemed to have a huge misunderstanding. Seems like infertility is not their own problem. Communication too! What did you think about the miscommunication about adoption? Opportunity lost?

It's frustrating when couples lose chances just because they don't speak about their emotions and thoughts. This goes for both fictional characters and real life people too.

5.) Is Elisabeth just being bitter in her letter to Jeremy (her therapist) or do you really think she has decided that she wouldn't be a good mother?

I really think she has had enough and is certain she wouldn't be a good mother.

6.) Going back to Gina and Alice... Alice's boyfriend, Dominick says that Alice and Nick were having "sexual issues", but got too embarrassed to continue. With Alice's comment later on wondering about having a lesbian affair and Dominick's embarrassment...could it be true?

This book has been quite surprising so far, so perhaps anything is possible. (My answers are really short today.. :/)

7.) It really makes me sad the more I learn about Alice's "old" and "new" life. Could you imagine learning about how mean and rough you had been?

No, I couldn't. I wish I never become mean in any way.

12. "I don't remember. I don't remember. I won't remember."
Do you think Alice could be unconsciously (or maybe even consciously) blocking her memories? That little mantra she said to herself was strange.

You do have to wonder, but I don't think so.

13. Elisabeth and Alice are not as close as they once were. Do you think this is because Elisabeth is unable to have children. Or does Elisabeth's bitterness/anger surpass that?

That's got to be part of it. But the mentioning of Gina all the time makes you wonder.

14. I think it's interesting that Elisabeth and Frannie are also narrators. Why do you think the author does this? Whose story are you enjoying more -- Fran's or Elisabeth's? Why?

I think the author did this because they know intricate parts of what happened in the 10 lost years. I'm not sure if I like it though.

15. Gina has been mentioned a few times; often secretively and sometimes with contempt, any theories/ideas on who she might be?

First thought--the "other" woman.
Second theory--perhaps a child they lost?

16. Looks like we were right about Alice suppressing her memories: "It had seemed like she was about to fall head first into all her memories but then she'd deliberately resisted it..."

I don't think it's all suppression. I think she'd like to remember. She has good memories mixed in with the bad. I'm sure she'd want them no matter what else happened.

17. "Alice knew that Frannie had lost a boyfriend during the Second World War..."
Do you think it's possible that Phil, the recipient of Frannie's letters, could be dead? Or do you think Elisabeth's theory that Phil is married makes more sense?

I think he's dead or she wouldn't be writing to him after all these years.

18. I feel devastated for Elisabeth. I know dealing with infertility was rough but I didn't realize how much so. Why do you think she keeps putting herself through failed IVF's instead of adopting?

No idea on this one.

19. Everyone obviously knew who Gina was but no one was forthcoming. Do you think Alice's family should withhold painful/awkward memories or should they rip it off like a band aid and tell her everything at once? Explain your position.

I think they way Alice is worrying about it so much she needs to be told.

20. Anyone surprised at how normal Dominick seems to be? I kind of expected him to be more suave.

I did too, but I don't know why.

21. He [Ben] said, "I've been thinking."
I told him so had I, but he could go first. He said he'd been thinking about what Alice had said last week and he'd decided she was one hundred percent right."
Do you think Ben was referring to the IVF treatments or was he referring to something else altogether?

Not sure I was very confused.

22. Whoa! Gina is dead? I didn't see that one coming!

Very tragic.

23. So, we finally learn a little about the divorce. I can't believe Gina and Alice were such good friends that it would help ruin a marriage. Have you ever known someone like that?

Nope, but it kind of explains why she'd be less involved in some of her friend's lives.

24. Alice must have been one mean, mean person for Nick to resent her so much. It's really sad!

She equally hates him and I'm beginning to wonder what all happened. He doesn't seem so bad.

25. Their kids are just crazy! They definitely make me laugh though. Especially Tom and Olivia!

Can you imagine being able to meet your kids for the first time when they're already somewhat big? It'd be an interesting experience. I feel so bad for her. I do agree they are cute.

26. Elisabeth and Ben seemed to have a huge misunderstanding. Seems like infertility is not their own problem. Communication too! What did you think about the miscommunication about adoption? Opportunity lost?

Sad how things like this actually happen in real life.

27. Is Elisabeth just being bitter in her letter to Jeremy (her therapist) or do you really think she has decided that she wouldn't be a good mother?

I think it's just frustration coming through in her writing.

28. Going back to Gina and Alice... Alice's boyfriend, Dominick says that Alice and Nick were having "sexual issues", but got too embarrassed to continue. With Alice's comment later on wondering about having a lesbian affair and Dominick's embarrassment...could it be true?

It truly makes one wonder, doesn't it?

29. It really makes me sad the more I learn about Alice's "old" and "new" life. Could you imagine learning about how mean and rough you had been?

I just keep wondering what all Gina's role was in all of this. It has to be more than just her.

Tabitha Questions for Chapters 10-13

12) "I don't remember. I don't remember. I won't remember."
Do you think Alice could be unconsciously (or maybe even consciously) blocking her memories? That little mantra she said to herself was strange.
-Yes. Shortly before Alice thought that it says that Alice didn’t want to get her memory back, but that she wanted to go back in time to the year 1998. (p. 112)

13) Elisabeth and Alice are not as close as they once were. Do you think this is because Elisabeth is unable to have children? Or does Elisabeth's bitterness/anger surpass that?
-I think that is a part of it.

14) I think it's interesting that Elisabeth and Frannie are also narrators. Why do you think the author does this? Whose story are you enjoying more -- Fran's or Elisabeth's? Why?
-I think the author does this to give us the perspectives of Alice’s forgotten memories from other people. I enjoy Fran’s story more because her story is more positive.

15) Gina has been mentioned a few times; often secretively and sometimes with contempt, any theories/ideas on who she might be?
-I don’t know who she might be. I just know that nobody wants Alice to know who she is.

30) Do you think it wise of Alice to declare she and Nick are getting back together before her memory comes back? Do you think it will come back?

31) When Luke first appeared what did you think? Do you think $150 for a personal trainer is too much?

32) What do you think of the way Alice's emotions/reactions seem to remain intact even though the memories which would provoke them seem to be lost?

33) Do you think Elisabeth went too far in taking the child with her? Did she have a mental break down?

34) Have fertility statue will travel. I chuckled about the statue. Do you think it will work?

35) Wow! What was your initial reaction to the laundry machine incident? What did you think of Nick's reaction when Alice confronted him about it?
What did you think when you found out it wasn't Nick who kissed the woman, but Gina's husband or do you think maybe Nick did as well?

36)What did you make of Madison's dream?

Sashana Answers for chapters 23-25

30) Do you think it wise of Alice to declare she and Nick are getting back together before her memory comes back? Do you think it will come back?
I don't think it was wise but then again she's not in her right mind -- so who can blame her? She doesn't know just how bad her and Nick's problems are so she should wait it out before she makes any rash decisions.

31) When Luke first appeared what did you think? Do you think $150 for a personal trainer is too much?
I enjoyed the scene where she thought he was a pool boy. I honestly didn't know what to expect when he showed up. My initial thought was that he was her gay best friend.

32) What do you think of the way Alice's emotions/reactions seem to remain intact even though the memories which would provoke them seem to be lost?
It must be very confusing for her to feel all of these things but not know why.

33) Do you think Elisabeth went too far in taking the child with her? Did she have a mental break down?
I think it was a mental breakdown and she was right to seek help. She did a good thing by saving the child but a horrible thing afterwards. The mother of that child should have been reprimanded too.

34) Have fertility statue will travel. I chuckled about the statue. Do you think it will work?
Nope

35) Wow! What was your initial reaction to the laundry machine incident? What did you think of Nick's reaction when Alice confronted him about it?
What did you think when you found out it wasn't Nick who kissed the woman, but Gina's husband or do you think maybe Nick did as well?
I thought it was mean of Nick to laugh when she accused him. I was also confused because I was so sure that Nick cheated, I'm glad he didn't. Why in the world would Alice confuse Michael and Nick though?

36)What did you make of Madison's dream?
It was really strange. Maybe she witnessed the accident.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Sashana asked,"Why in the world would Alice confuse Michael and Nick though?"

I know it was weird. I wonder if it could be a complication from her head injury. Perhaps it's more serious than we were lead to believe. I hope this isn't one of those books where she gets to make amends and then dies.

Sashana Lisarenee wrote: "I know it was weird. I wonder if it could be a complication from her head injury. Perhaps it's more serious than we we..."

Did you catch the part where it said that Gina didn't tell Mrs. H's husband because she didn't want to be responsible for breaking up another marriage? I wonder if she was referring to her own marriage or Alice's.

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Questions for chapters 23-25

30) Do you think it wise of Alice to declare she and Nick are getting back together before her memory comes back? Do you think it will come back?

No, I don't think declaring that was wise. Because I think that when her memory does get back she will remember all the reasons why they split up and probably will change her mind.

31) When Luke first appeared what did you think? Do you think $150 for a personal trainer is too much?

I thought he was unorthodox pool-boy. :D
I was interested, so I asked a friend who goes to some fancy gym. If you want a personal trainer when you workout it costs about 10$ per hour. They don't do house visits, so that would probably be more expensive, but again, not that much.
I will never complain how gym & workout is expensive in our city again. LOL

32) What do you think of the way Alice's emotions/reactions seem to remain intact even though the memories which would provoke them seem to be lost?

I think that subconsciously she knows everything, just is fighting it because there are too much painful memories...

33) Do you think Elisabeth went too far in taking the child with her? Did she have a mental break down?

Elizabeth is the saddest character in this story to me. Yeah, she is definitely having a mental break down, I hope everything will be fine...

34) Have fertility statue will travel. I chuckled about the statue. Do you think it will work?

Statue was funny to me too. I hope it will work too, at least psychologically to calm Elizabeth a little bit.

35) Wow! What was your initial reaction to the laundry machine incident? What did you think of Nick's reaction when Alice confronted him about it?
What did you think when you found out it wasn't Nick who kissed the woman, but Gina's husband or do you think maybe Nick did as well?

When I first read about laundry machine incident I was "AHA!". I was sure that it was the problem in their marriage, because I could not believe that all those little things could make it collapse. But afterward it turned out that Alice just saw manifestation of her fears.

36)What did you make of Madison's dream?

Weird. I think Sashana is right, and she witnessed the accident....

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Questions for chapters 23-25

30) Do you think it wise of Alice to declare she and Nick are getting back together before her memory comes back? Do you think it will come back?
Nope. I think it could be dangerous to state something when she isn't sure it will truly happen. It will just cause more problems.

31) When Luke first appeared what did you think? Do you think $150 for a personal trainer is too much?
I didn't know what to think of Luke at first. I like him but I think $150 is too much for a personal trainer for sure. You can get one at my gym for about $20 an hour.

32) What do you think of the way Alice's emotions/reactions seem to remain intact even though the memories which would provoke them seem to be lost?
I think that she doesn't know any better. She seems to be confused about everything.

33) Do you think Elisabeth went too far in taking the child with her? Did she have a mental break down?
I agree with the others, she did a great deed in saving the child but then she did a horrible one after. I think she is having a mental breakdown and I wonder how much her therapist is actually helping. It seems like she has a long way to go.

34) Have fertility statue will travel. I chuckled about the statue. Do you think it will work?
I though the fertility statue was funny but I don't think it will work.

35) Wow! What was your initial reaction to the laundry machine incident? What did you think of Nick's reaction when Alice confronted him about it? What did you think when you found out it wasn't Nick who kissed the woman, but Gina's husband or do you think maybe Nick did as well?
I was thinking "Here is the proof! He really did cheat." Then I was shocked when Nick said he didn't cheat on her. I never thought it would be a different man all together. My guess is that Alice was having an affair with Michael and that is why Nick responded the way he did.

36)What did you make of Madison's dream?
I agree with Sashana, I think maybe Madison was in the car with her mom during the accident.

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Questions for 26-28

37.) I'm so glad at least one of Nick's sisters is somewhat normal. Seems Ella always liked Alice, but was torn between going against family or going with them.

38.) Olivia's performance. How cute! I would love to see that in real life.

39.) Although, as parents how could you not take the time to see her routine beforehand and/or help her with it? I was a little upset about it.

40.) Oh what a set up! I'm thinking this little salsa set up might be just what Nick and Alice need. What do you think?

41.) Nick says they were too wrapped up in Gina and Mike's problems and got to close. Do you think friends can be too close?

42.) There just wasn't enough time in 2008. It had become a limited resource. Back in 1998, the days were so much more spacious. When she woke up in the morning, the day rolled outin front of her like a long hallway for her to meander down, free to linger over the best parts. Days were so stungy now. Mean slivers of time. They flew by like speeding cars..." I so agree. How about you? Do you think we are so wrapped up in "going" and "doing" that we forget what matters?

43.) Very end of chapter 28. "Madison gave a tiny gasp of surprise and burst into tears." I did too. :) You think this the right approach for the situation?

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Questions for 26-28

37.) I'm so glad at least one of Nick's sisters is somewhat normal. Seems Ella always liked Alice, but was torn between going against family or going with them.
I like Ella, it seems like even though she may be a flake, she still cares about everyone. Maybe she has changed just as everyone else has

38.) Olivia's performance. How cute! I would love to see that in real life.
It does sound really cute and very creative. I would love to have seen that as well.

39.) Although, as parents how could you not take the time to see her routine beforehand and/or help her with it? I was a little upset about it.
I almost wonder if Olivia wanted it to be a surprise? Maybe she didn't even offer to show it to her parents. Not to mention with everything going on with Alice's memory I don't hold it against her for not seeing her child's performance before hand.

40.) Oh what a set up! I'm thinking this little salsa set up might be just what Nick and Alice need. What do you think?
It sounds to me like they are on their way to patching things up. They even had a conversation without screaming at each other, eve though Nick did get mad and storm off.

41.) Nick says they were too wrapped up in Gina and Mike's problems and got to close. Do you think friends can be too close?
Yes, I do think that this can happen. I have seen it happen before with other relationships. It can also happen in reverse, also.

42.) There just wasn't enough time in 2008. It had become a limited resource. Back in 1998, the days were so much more spacious. When she woke up in the morning, the day rolled out in front of her like a long hallway for her to meander down, free to linger over the best parts. Days were so stingy now. Mean slivers of time. They flew by like speeding cars..." I so agree. How about you? Do you think we are so wrapped up in "going" and "doing" that we forget what matters?
I think that it is very much like this today. I see it happen all to often. People get so angry when they feel like they don't have enough time to do whatever they need to do.

43.) Very end of chapter 28. "Madison gave a tiny gasp of surprise and burst into tears." I did too. :) You think this the right approach for the situation?
I think it was the reaction any child would give if this happened and it was a rare occurrence. I think that they knew it was an emotional problem that caused the issue and I think it is best to talk calmly and rationally to a child rather than to yell and immediately give a consequence without hearing what the child had to say first.

Tabitha Questions for Chapters 14 - 17

16) Looks like we were right about Alice suppressing her memories: "It had seemed like she was about to fall head first into all her memories but then she'd deliberately resisted it..."
-I can understand that though. I wouldn’t want the memories. I would want to go back and actually live it.

17) "Alice knew that Frannie had lost a boyfriend during the Second World War..."
Do you think it's possible that Phil, the recipient of Frannie's letters, could be dead? Or do you think Elisabeth's theory that Phil is married makes more sense?
-I have thought for a while now that Phil is dead because if it was someone that was alive I think she would have more contact with them or even a different way of contact with them than by letter.

18) I feel devastated for Elisabeth. I know dealing with infertility was rough but I didn't realize how much so. Why do you think she keeps putting herself through failed IVF's instead of adopting?
-I am sad for her also. I am not sure, maybe she wants her child to be genetically matched to her instead of being a mother to someone else’s child.

19) Everyone obviously knew who Gina was but no one was forthcoming. Do you think Alice's family should withhold painful/awkward memories or should they rip it off like a band aid and tell her everything at once? Explain your position.
-I don’t think they should withhold the memories but I don’t think they should tell her everything at once either. I probably would have started from the beginning of the 10 years she missed and work my way through the years, maybe a few years every day. I think this because if nobody told her she would find out eventually and then she would be upset or angry at everyone who didn’t tell her. I also think that if they told her everything at once she would get overwhelmed.

20) Anyone surprised at how normal Dominick seems to be? I kind of expected him to be more suave.
-I didn’t really care about how Dominick was. I was just mad that her marriage is over. I was mad at her for kissing him. I was wanting to yell at her (and him) that she was married.

21) He [Ben] said, "I've been thinking."
I told him so had I, but he could go first. He said he'd been thinking about what Alice had said last week and he'd decided she was one hundred percent right."
Do you think Ben was referring to the IVF treatments or was he referring to something else altogether?
-I am not sure. I am trying to think about what Alice’s stand on the IVF thing would be.

22) Whoa! Gina is dead? I didn't see that one coming!
-I am still not sure who Gina is though. She seems important to the story but we still don’t really know anything about her.

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Questions for 26-28

37.) I'm so glad at least one of Nick's sisters is somewhat normal. Seems Ella always liked Alice, but was torn between going against family or going with them.

I don't know. Maybe she liked her, but I do not think she liked her now.

38.) Olivia's performance. How cute! I would love to see that in real life.

Me too.

39.) Although, as parents how could you not take the time to see her routine beforehand and/or help her with it? I was a little upset about it.

Well maybe Olivia wanted it to be a surprise. Like in a movie 'Little Miss Sunshine'.... LOL

40.) Oh what a set up! I'm thinking this little salsa set up might be just what Nick and Alice need. What do you think?

I was hoping it would help them to get back together.

41.) Nick says they were too wrapped up in Gina and Mike's problems and got to close. Do you think friends can be too close?

Yeah, I think they can be. If you identify too much with them, then it could happen the same that happened to Alice and Nick...

Yeah, I think that we are constantly in a hurry these days. I try to prioritize and give enough attention to the people that matter too me, but unfortunately because of work and other stupid boring obligations, that's usually not the case.

43.) Very end of chapter 28. "Madison gave a tiny gasp of surprise and burst into tears." I did too. :) You think this the right approach for the situation?

Yeah I think it was. Maybe ice cream was over the top, but conversation was much better option than yelling. Madison obviously is full of anger because of the divorce...

I don't feel I really know enough about Nick's family to really comment about this.

38.) Olivia's performance. How cute! I would love to see that in real life.

It did sound very cute.

39.) Although, as parents how could you not take the time to see her routine beforehand and/or help her with it? I was a little upset about it.

Well, if she lost her memory, maybe she had seen it before and couldn't remember.

40.) Oh what a set up! I'm thinking this little salsa set up might be just what Nick and Alice need. What do you think?

You would hope so, but we and Alice still don't know what happened.

41.) Nick says they were too wrapped up in Gina and Mike's problems and got to close. Do you think friends can be too close?

I've never experienced it, but I'm thinking it could happen.

I think the Alice of 1998 didn't have children and or the stress that comes with having them. Once your time is taken up with driving them here or helping them with that it can take it's toll on a person. Plus if a couple disagrees on things like discipline which sounds a little like what might have happened, it can really kick the stress level up a notch.

The me of 10 years ago was appalled when a friend of mine told me she loved it when her husband went away on business trips. While I still don't care for my husband going on them, I now have a better understanding of why she did.

43.) Very end of chapter 28. "Madison gave a tiny gasp of surprise and burst into tears." I did too. :) You think this the right approach for the situation?

Well, the other methods didn't seem to be working so maybe. I probably wouldn't have handled it quite that way. I would have asked for an explanation of what happened. I wonder of the pre accident Alice would have?
