Runner up: Mr. Darcy's first proposal, which is almost equally as awful.
I seem to find oblivious males entertaining...

Of the films, one of my favorite moments (maybe an odd choice) is in the Keira Knightley version (though that's not my favorite film) when the carriage stops to provide Lizzie and Aunt and Uncle Gardiner with a stunning view of Pemberley, and Lizzie pops up to her feet and gives a sort of hysterical laugh. I love that moment - it's a sort of "Oh, you have GOT to be kidding" this-is-what-might-have-been no-wonder-he-was-thought-he-was-doing-me-a-favor moment.
(I do not, as some people seem to think, believe that Lizzie fell in love with Mr. Darcy only when she saw Pemberley and realized how rich he was; I see that moment in the film sort of as the realization of what lay down the Path Not Taken.)
I agree with the Collins proposal - one of the greatest "ick" moments in literature! I am also very fond of Mrs. Bennett's flipflops - Bingley as the second coming to Bingley as pond scum.
Ohhh, good question! SO hard to decide! But I think I have to go with the dance between Lizzie and Darcy at the Netherfield Ball. It's a great sparring scene but it also has delicious irony in that we know how he feels about her but she can't fathom it yet.

Something to think about when we're inclined to fawn over celebrities who can't boast of any real talent or "miraculous virtue".

Of the films, one of my favorite moments (maybe an odd choice) is..."
Tracey, I also never believed it was Darcy's wealth that changed Elizabeth's mind about him. I have always thought that his household's admiration for him and dedication to him combined with the stories of his care for his sister that weighed heavily in her change of heart.
I think my favorite part is when Elizabeth tells off Lady Catherine regarding the "engagement." You get to see Elizabeth's strong and fiesty character while her feelings for Darcy also come shining through.

Rachel, I'm so glad you brought up that scene. I've always had trouble with it. So many people love it (in the novel and in most adaptations). I can't take it. It makes me cringe and honestly I often skim it or fast forward. I can't explain exactly why - maybe its because they seem to act so wrong.
Can you explain why people love it so much even though it's so painful to watch?

I think if I consider this question for too long, I'll come up with about 10 other favorite scenes in the novel. Every line of Mr. Bennet's is my favorite. He gets the best lines (in much the same way Maggie Smith's character does in Downton).
The line that runs through my head at random times is, "Darcy, in wretched suspense..." when Darcy watching Elizabeth cry. Sometimes I say I'm in wretched suspense.

As for the adaptations, BBC well again there are so many. I love, as I did in the novel, the scene around the piano and also the awkward scene when he visits just before the proposal.
I also love the bit when Caroline is provoking Lizzie and questioning her about Wickham. Then Darcy nearly stands to save her and then the heart stopping moment when his eyes meet hers!!! <3 then shortly after that is the moment when Darcy stands up for Lizzie with 'for it has been many months since I have considered her one of the handsomest woman of my acquaintance' :O <3 which brings me to a similar moment when she has walked to Netherfield to see Jane and, to the dismay of Caroline, defends her appearance and 'admiration for her fine eyes' with 'they were brightened by the exercise' !! :) in both cases Carolines face is hilarious and I just wanna say haha Caroline, in your face!!!! ;)
Then finally the end kiss. Amazing the looks on their faces are just like they are both thinking - finally! Love it!!
After film of 2005. Well , again the awkward scene before the proposal when he just stands there and fiddles with his gloves. I feel so sorry for him. Also love when the first time he sees Lizzie and has to double take!! Aww and then the amazing moment when he hands her into the carriage, skin on skin!! So cute!
And well the first proposal is pretty good even if it didn't happen like that in the book!! I quite like it and again similar for the final proposal at dawn. So romantic!!! Oh and in both series and film I love it when they dance!!!
Back to film, The kissing scene out side Pemberley is an alternative American ending so for me the film finishes with Lizzie leaving her fathers room and running to find Darcy, which I prefer to the other ending, although something inbetween would have been good.
So, there are too many best moments in it so I clearly can't pick just one!!!! The whole thing is the best moment!!

Haha!! very comical! :D

I also never thought Elizabeth fell for Mr. Darcy because of his wealth. That moment when she sees Pemberley for the first time in the Kiery Knightley version is perfect. And I love it when she says, "He's so...rich," as if he has the plague or something.
As for the book...I just can't pick one moment. I think that's why I asked the question. The entire thing is just so perfectly perfect. I adore it.

I also like when Mrs.Bennet runs to Mr.Bennet to try and get him to make Lizzy say yes to Mr.Collins.
Plus the ending when everyone lives happily ever after.
But there are so many great moments in P&P.

And of course! That like why I love Austen, they always live happily ever after! :) xx

I love how she replies too! XD

I really don't quite know what you mean by "they seem to act so wrong" or that the scene is "painful to watch". I don't see either of those things. I like the scene because Lizzie is trying to figure Darcy out, not realizing the reason why is because she's attracted by him, and Darcy is trying to deal with the appearance of Wickham and how that involves Lizzie. And they obviously dance well together. Plus, I love how Lizzie can't stop herself from saying yes when he asks her to dance, though she isn't ready to see the reason why!

That's what I think but there are moments in the series where this is evident.
I don't know what other people think :) ?

I agree; I think Lizzy is definitely attracted to Darcy from the beginning but is too proud to let it show openly.

Other than that, I would have to say pretty much every scene where Darcy and Lizzy are sparring with each other. So sweet and entertaining :)

I happened to watch it with the director's commentary (cos Joe Wright's just awesome, period) and describes it as "And there's Mr. Collins, considering himself in the mirror." It just made me giggle.
As to my favorite scene (I've never thought about this before! Why?! I'm such a huge Austen fan!) I guess it would have to be Lizzy standing up to Lady Catherine. You just feel so proud that she can hold her own like that.
And, in the BBC version, I suppose (cos I'm such a romantic and all) it would have to be when Lizzy's and Darcy's eyes meet at Pemeberley, while she's helping Georgiana at the pianoforte. Oh oh oh!! Also, in the BBC version: when Lizzy comes to Netherfield to see Jane, and she runs into Darcy outside, and he's all "Miss Bennet! Did you walk here?" And she says, "EVidently", barely refraining from rolling her eyes. And the look of amusement that crosses Darcy's face - I thought it revealed a lighter side to their relationship :P

I agree. Jennifer Ehle said that she thought Elizabeth is attracted to Darcy from the beginning. She is willing to laugh at his rudeness to her mother but when he insults her ("she is tolerable, I suppose") then she's upset. She's hurt.

I mean it's painful to watch (or read) because it makes me really uncomfortable. Unlike some other scenes where you can see her teasing him, here she seems to be trying to hurt him. And he's no better. He so clearly snubs her at the end. I just don't like how much they are on the offensive (that's how it feels wrong).
I want to like the scene. So many people do. I feel like I'm missing something. (And in the 2005 movie it doesn't help matters that they have the weird dancing-alone part at the end. I know I'll upset some people by saying that, but I hate that part!)

When their eyes meet! Can't not smile! <3 definitely a swoon moment !! ;)

hey, Nicole, welcome to the group! :)

Yes love that line! If any young man comes for Mary or Kitty send them in, i am quite as my leissure!
love it! and yeah the giggle is funny - she's like 'Wow i must be strong willed to have said no to this...!!!' ;)

Yes love that line! If any young man comes for Mary o..."
Oh my word that part makes me laugh every time! ♥♥♥

my other favourite line which, if i am not mistaken DOESN'T appear in the book ( i dont think?), but appears in 1995 series and 2005 is the one where Lizzy says 'I am determined that nothing but the deepest love will induce me into martimony' I love that line and it sums up Lizzy's view on love and marriage!
it should be in the book!!! well i don't think it is as i have searched for it before... PLease correct me if i am wrong!!

Lol--I actually love that part of that scene in the '05 version! I think it was a perfect directorial way to show that these people are attracted to each other (not seeing anyone else around while they are dancing together) before they are ready to admit they are. Though I do like the '95 version of this scene better--I think it's clearer that there is miscommunication going on but that real connection is still being made. (Plus, Firth is so good at showing how Darcy is still holding himself back and I am NOT a Keira Knightley fan.)

i agree i like how everyone else disappears as if they are noticing no one but each other and it shows the attraction which neither will admit yet and on Lizzy's side she doesn;t even realise yet!! and the 1995 is clearly and i absoulty love the way Firth says 'This is no reflection on your own character i'm sure' or well something like that. he says it in such a sarcastic way - i love and have to laugh!!

LOL I forgot about that! thats hilarious!! XD
And his other line, "Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins.. and I will never see you again if you do." LOL GO MR BENNET! he reminds me of my dad! ;p

I do love Mr Bennet!! All his lines are classic! And I forgot that one two!!

And when teasing Collins - " it is happy for you that you possess the talent of flattering with delicacy. May I ask whether these pleasing attentions proceed from the impulse of the moment, or are the result of previous study?"
Poor Collins is totally oblivious!!! ;)

And when teasing Collins - " it is happy for you that you possess the talent of flattering with delicacy..."
:)) I love in the 2005 version when you can tell Jane kicks at Lizzy under the table! Like "Stop talking before you get yourself in trouble!"

Yeah!'n When Lizzie is like 'oh believe me no one suspect your manners to be rehearsed!'
That is soo funny!!
Bless Collins!!

Also love the facial expressions of Collins in the 2005 during the dance with Lizzy! So funny and Lizzy reactions too and her looking away do as not to laugh!
And in 1995 with that dance again with Darcy at that side laughing at Lizzy - haha both do funny!!
Just love to hate Collins really!!!

Oh my word! ROTFL! I love that line! Mr Collins always manages to make me both laugh and cringe at intervals! another one of Jane's masterpiece characters. ;)
