I actually love Gregorian chant. And you are obviously not correct (smile). I still do think that Rome was in a power play with Constantinople and I am not sure if the right power base won out but this is the way it is.

There was the belief that something would be mistranslated if put into a language other than the Latin of the Vulgate translation, which was the official Roman Catholic translation for centuries, until the Doury translation was authorized by the Roman Church. However the word "Vulgate" refers to the fact that this translation is in the vulgar street language of Rome, not the Classic Latin or Greek, which was used by scholars at the time that St. Jerome wrote the Vulgate.

Thank you for that explanation Scott.

Unfortunately you have too many book covers and a non image and a link but no author's link. Of course, there is no photo on this one.

Tacman | 15 comments Bentley, I'm going to tell Rick Santorum that you deny that our Lord wrote the Bible and instead think it was written by some Greek named Anonymous.

Oh my, I am smiling. Just trying to help you guys trace back to the author as noted by goodreads (I would like to reaffirm not yours truly) and the edition itself. What happens Tacman is that folks looking for discussion on the Bible will be able to see and link to the discussion here for that matter and without the links (in this case ambiguous) - that would not happen. I am sure that the Lord spoke to many including his Apostles and others who wrote the New Testament; as far as the Old Testament (it probably was many folks - many of whom may be anonymous). We have been this route before and like I said, we try to cite every book and author the same way because of this cross population and cross linkages. I wish the Lord would have been able to take full credit for writing the words down and publishing it. But alas.

One estimate that I learned in Seminary was that the Bible was written by 53 authors over a period of 5000 years. And the first 5 books, aka, the Books of Moses, were oral tradition for the first 2000 years of that 5000. Liguistic analysis suggests that the Book of Isiah was written by 3 different authors, over a period of several generations. Still, as a whole the Bible fits together as one piece of literature.

Tacman | 15 comments Just for the record, my comment was a joke.

Katy (kathy_h) I am still working my way through this book. In a way it is fun being behind because I can use all of your comments as background when I read. I am glad that each chapter is short, but they are literally packed dense with information. Reading this also makes me realize how little I have learned about world history. A great read.

Sorry Kathy that I did not see your post until now; I was away for awhile and am just catching up. I am glad that you are enjoying the book; I did too.

I just completed seeing once again the Byzantium exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City which was fascinating.
