Lisa Kay’s Questions for Prologue – Chapter 9 1. Is it just my imagination, or is Colin flirting more with Eloise in this entry to the series? In Chapter 4 he said, when referring to someone hanging over her bed at night, “Who said I was talking about a ghost?” Was he hitting on her? Speculation as to why he is doing this? Meaning, is he getting more comfortable around her?
2. A snippet from the Personal Codebook of the Pink Carnation at the beginning of each chapter is interesting. Sounds fun. Do you like figuring out puzzles? If so, what is your favorite type?
3. You didn’t really expect Henrietta to “do exactly as Jane had requested, and deliver the decoded letter to Wickham at the War Office…” did you? It’s not surprise that she is going with her daydream of finding the spy first. Comments.
4. I don’t know about you, but Miles’ conspicuousness sounds yummy to me. If you like blonds, that is? Comments.
5. Do you think Lord Vaughn’s murdered footman was a double agent? Do you think Lord Vaughn could be the Black Tulip, or is that too obvious? (What with the serpent-headed cane and snakes on his waistcoat! And all his questions about the Selwicks and his mysterious visit to The Duke’s Knees.)
6. Ah! Too funny! We do have a turnip in this story, after all: Reggie Fitzhugh, AKA “Turnip Fitzhugh”. Is he a candidate for the Black Tulip?
7. Okay, the debutant piqued and jealous over an exotic widow, with the wisdom of the Dowager Duchess in her ear, has been done many times before; however, this scene played out remarkable well, don’t you think? (Loved the “fight” over the lorgnette, LOL!) We are given more some balance and reflection on the “husband hunting” Theresa Ballinger. BTW, could she be the Black Tulip?
8. Who ever heard of the classic “car chase” being done with sedan chairs? “Asphyxiation by bosom.” LOL! Are you liking the subtle humor and turn of phrase in this one? Are you enjoying the bantering that goes on, not only between Henrietta and Miles, but Henrietta and her mother? Do you have a favor line or scene?
9. Do you think Miles pick-pocketed the wrong note?
10. Were you surprised to see that Henrietta and Miles had come under Delaroche’s scrutiny, if for the wrong reasons?
Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 10 - 15
11. I already liked Miles from the beginning; he is such a geeky Adonis. However, hearing the history of his neglected childhood and fortuitous adoption by Richard and the Uppingtons endeared me to him even more. You?
12. This is like a sophisticated historical romantic suspense with a great dash of humor thrown in. Since we are doing the Gallant Gents Challenge starting in April, I’m almost sorry we are reading this now, as I can see a blond Cary Grant playing the part of Miles Dorrington. Or do you have someone else in mind? And who would play Geoff? And Henrietta? And Lady Uppington?
13. Book Quote: “In the nursery, crawling around on all fours and drooling,” Henrietta agreed, so sweetly that Miles glanced at her sharply. LOL! I love what goes through Henrietta’s mind, but even more what slips out of her mouth. Any favorite thoughts or statements from her in this section of the readings?
14. This book is so well written. Loved how the Frobisher scene played out. It has been done a gazillion times, but Miles’ internal dialogue elevates it. Agreed? Did you think Frobisher was going to manage to get out of the duel? Will he remember any of the encounter?
15. Did you think the French playbill was significant?
16. Henrietta has realized she is jealous. Then she starts to recall her childhood with Miles. Did you like that part? Any favorite recollection?
17. “Ten Easy Ways to Seduce the Pants Off Him” – LMAO! I need a copy of that article. No question here, just a statement of fact. Well, I guess I could ask what you thought of the comparable one that Hen had. Thoughts?
18. Uh oh! Didn’t you just know Hen was going to get caught?! LOL! Too funny. Comments about the park scene and the ride home?
19. What?! Why did you think Signor Marconi going through Henrietta’s papers in her escritoire?
Susan’s Questions for Chapters 16-24 20. Uh-oh! Miles's home was ransacked, Downey attacked and now Vaughn has Henrietta closed off in a room by herself with him. Do you think Vaughn was responsible for the breaking and entering? Or did it have something to do with Signor Marconi and him digging through Hen's things?
21. *SQUEE* Miles kissed Henrietta!! Sorry, got a little excited there :) Let's back up a bit...what was Vaughn and Hen's conversation really about? Do you think he meant to hurt her or was there some other intention there?
22. Jane went to 13 Rue Nicose. How did she know to go there?
23. Miles avoided Henrietta for a week. Comments?
24. Who was dressed as the Phantom Monk? And what are they looking for? Do they think Richard is still involved in espionage?
25. Back to the present with Colin and Eloise. Is Collin flirting? Why isn't Eloise jumping on that? Really, what would a little harmless flirting hurt?
26. Didn't your heart break for Hen when he finally talked to her? Mine did. Do you think Miles caught on to her feelings when she was singing? Or will he be a typical guy and not know, or maybe not acknowledge, what's happening?
CaroB's Questions for Chapters 25 to 32 27. Who would've thought "You, damn it!" could be such a romantic expression! These two are so utterly sweet when they let their guard down but talk about miscommunication!! And just when things were getting interesting, they get busted! Were you laughing with delight or groaning in frustration at that point?
28. Is it just me or are there certain parallels between the Henrietta & Miles scene and the Colin & Eloise scene? Blasted interruptions! And did it seem to you that Eloise's friendship with Pammy is tainting her by association, in Colin's eyes? What do you think might be the story there with Pammy?
29. A wedding! That was almost snuck in there, it seemed to have that little fanfare. What a pity! On the bright side, there was the use of the word "skullduggery" which is such a fun word that puts me in mind of pirates and finishing sentences with "me matey". Although most of the humour is coming from the plot, did you find little pockets of funny language as well? Any examples?
30. I got completely lost during that scene where Henrietta was eavesdropping on Vaugh. Did you understand what he was doing there? And who was the woman with him?
31. A carriage chase! How exciting! That makes it official; all good spy novels must include one, no matter the time period :-) Was that a nice bit of action for you? It did seem to make them realize that they're not playing at spy-games now but in the middle of the real thing. Thoughts?
32. Wickham didn't seem too convinced that Vaughn was a possible culprit. Did he know who it was when Miles went to see him, do you think?

How many chapters a day are we reading?
Hi everyone! I'm a little behind but hope to post questions by tomorrow. Hope that's OK. Here's my proposed breakdown - about 80 pages per day/set of questions.
Ch 1 - 9 (me)
Ch 10 - 15 (?)
Ch 16 - 24 (?)
Ch 25 - 32 (?)
Ch 33 - end (?)
If that's too much, we can scale down. ;-)
That looks good to me, taita. I can do the second set (Chp 10-15). But, I'll be tied up on Friday and Saturday.

That looks good to me too! And it's fine that you're a little behind, because I am too. I had a horrible headache yesterday and went to bed around 5 in the evening and slept on and off all night. Oh Lisa Kay, the grandson is wonderful! They're staying with me for the next couple of weeks while they move into a new apartment. Oh, I'm so glad nothing is posted. Phew! As you may know, my ex (who was still a really good friend) passed away last week. Anyway, his brothers are in town to settle his estate... and they all took me out to dinner last night and ... got me drunk. LOL! I never drink anymore; getting too old for that. **sigh** Feeling the pain this morning; but, actually better than I thought I would be. Alas, no reading done. So, I'm glad others are behind too.

I thought he was flirting as well. Maybe he realizes that Eloise isn't out to harm his family. I hope he likes her ;)

Yes, I like puzzles...I'm not too fond of crossword puzzles, but I like word searches and LOVE Soduko! I think the Soduko app on my phone is the thing I play with the most LOL

I honestly think I like Miles more than I liked Richard! He's kinda quirky and sweet and yummy.

Now see, I was quick to think Lord Vaughn was the Black Tulip. And he is rather a strange person. As for his questions about the Selwicks and the secret meetings, not sure what they were leading to, unless he is working for the French. About the murdered footman, I'm guessing he was a double agent

I didn't like Theresa from the get-go. And having Hen be jealous was perfect! I loved that Miles really wasn't interested in her

I laughed all through reading this book! It was just what I needed after my nightmares from the last in Death book. I was dying with the car chase scene done with sedan chairs :D I loved this conversation when Hen was trying to talk her mother into letting her get into the spy game...
"Lady Uppington looked at her sympathetically. "We'll discuss it when you're older." "Juliet was married when she was thirteen, you know," protested Henrietta. "Yes, and look what happened to her," replied Lady Uppington. :)"

No, I wasn't surprised at all about that. I'm surprised that Geoff isn't under suspicion as well. Or maybe he is and we just don't know it yet.

I'm getting a kick out of the secondary, contemporary storyline alongside Henrietta's and Mile's story.

Well I'm a bit nerdy, so anything to do with puzzles (piece games, trivia games, riddles, mazes, crosswords, sudoku, codewords etc) are all right up my alley.

Gosh yes! I just don't understand parents that are like that. And after hearing about what he went through and how the Uppingtons responded made me like them even more too.

It's one of those times when I never knew a thigh touching could be sexy LOL I loved that the girls were dressed in green to blend in. And the names of the bushes BWWAAAHAHAHA
