Back home & still on US time?

message 253: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes :-(

Got back from the hospital at midnight. My doctor didn't like the lite-handed approach the NYC emergency room took. I needed to be in a cast immediately, but they told me there was no rush and I could check in with my doctor when I got home. Grrrr.... 20 days. Can't walk until next Friday, when they change and give me a walking booty thingy.

message 254: by [deleted user] (new)

Now you're in a cast? No wonder you're reading and reviewing again. Hang in there....

message 255: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 08, 2012 03:43AM) (new)

We were in the emergency room from 6 pm to midnight. Far less shiny and scenographic than an american hospital ( warmer too. I almost froze to death in NYC!) but the Italian health care system is quite fine and the doctors are excellent.

Only problem is that no one has been paid in a month. They work so hard on so little.

No, I'll stay at Ararat... don't know how much I'll be able to tackle this summer and fall.

How'd you break your ankle Hayes?

message 258: by [deleted user] (new)

Had just arrived in NYC and was walking around Rockefeller Center. There was a small curb (not at a street crossing, just from one pedestrian area to another) which I did not see. My foot was half on and half off, I slipped and rolled over onto my ankle. I'm not light either, so all my weight went onto my ankle. Small fracture and massive sprain.

The NY hospital played it all very low key, but the Italian doctors are much more worried about it. We'll see how it goes.

Things in Europe aren't too rosy right now. I'm glad you have good health care.

I was surprised that the NYC doctors did nothing for a fracture. I hope they didn't screw up.

Well, the emergency room is, after all for the emergency. So they took the xray and then said that I had to go to my doctor, who would have sent me to the orthopedic guy, who would have put a cast on me. When I said that my doctor was in Rome, and it would be 10 days before I could see him, the nurse said. Oh, that's ok... no hurry.

Italy is going through lots of troubles, but I hope they leave the health care system alone. It's one of the best in Europe. The doctors are great.

message 262: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 08, 2012 11:29AM) (new)

I didn't think that one through, but if it needed a cast, they should have given you a cast. I'm sure it will be okay. More comfortable clomping around on your own turf in a cast.

They're always making small changes to the HC system in Germany, but it's still very comprehensive, and guaranteed for everyone.

in italy too... even for tourists. It's in the constitution!

message 264: by [deleted user] (new)

...even for tourists! That is impressive.

I agree, and so do two of my buddies who are nurses, but it was sunday evening the weekend before labor day... how much you want to bet that the osteo guy wasn't on duty? I mean, I had insurance and was a paying customer and everything!

(That thing I wrote in #261 is the synopsis of what the hospital told me... grr... the sharp sarcasm didn't come through very well.)

Back to the real world ;o) ...
finished #33
King Solomon's Mines

#40 Gather Together in My Name

Review later. Can't quite figure out what the title means, but maybe inspiration will come to me.

message 281: by Bettie (new)

Bettie it is from the bible (don't know the numbers) - Jesus says something like: when more than x gather together in my name, I shall be there.

message 282: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you. The Encyclopedia Bettie-anica I shall call you! Now, how that applies to Anjelou's story is another problem. I'll mull on that for a bit.

message 283: by Bettie (last edited Dec 13, 2012 11:21AM) (new)

Bettie maybe she is/was spurring others on to think along her lines...

message 284: by [deleted user] (new)

I certainly hope not... not a very wholesome life she led. Although the last line is forward looking:
I had no idea what I was going to make of my life, but I had given a promise and found my innocence. I swore I'd never lose it again.

message 285: by [deleted user] (new)

You made it! :D
