Christine (chrisarrow) It seems to be an Asterix week. Our favorite Gaul popped up in the New York Times Magazine this weekend. The author of an essay was using the books to open a discussion about how to read children's literature - he refers to the depiction of the black pirate.

message 202: by [deleted user] (new)

All of those comics were of the times -- rather blatantly racist. Wasn't the early Disney stuff that way, too. (Having not read the article, I assume this was the topic?)

message 203: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) It was basically all children's older literature, though he did mention Phantom Menace.

message 204: by [deleted user] (new)

Gave up on Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter. Just not the book for me.

message 205: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished A tale of two cities. RTF. I'm glad I read it, but I will definitely be looking for the movie.

message 206: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Girl in Hyacinth Blue as well. Working on reviews.

Laura, I'll put the book in the mail on Monday or Tuesday.

#24 My review of Girl in Hyacinth Blue

My caffeine hasn't kicked in yet, so I may have to do some editing Coffee drunk. Editing done ;o)

message 209: by [deleted user] (new)

#25 is done... finally!

My review of A Suitable Boy

message 210: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished #26 The Joy Luck Club

Review later today

message 211: by [deleted user] (new)

Finishing the Boy really freed you up, didn't it? ;)

message 212: by [deleted user] (new)

It most certainly did.

Although I am having withdrawal symptoms.

message 213: by [deleted user] (new)

I gave up on PopCo, but it wasn't on the TBR Challenge list, so that's okay. I'm reading Hunger Games and I can't remember... did someone want to read that with me? Will go post in the Buddy Reads folder too.

message 214: by [deleted user] (new)

Will be finishing up a Kathy Reichs book, off challenge, and starting up another one, today or tomorrow.

Plugging happily along... how lovely it is not to have The Boy hanging over everything. For you all too, I bet you were all pretty sick of seeing those updates!

Kim (kimmr) Hayes wrote: "Will be finishing up a Kathy Reichs book, off challenge,..."

Is it a good one? I read quite a few books in the series, then I got really sick of them and gave up.

message 216: by [deleted user] (new)

To quote Hemingway; "I wish the boy were here..." ;)

Eh?

Kim wrote: "Is it a good one? I read quite a few books in the series, then I got really sick of them and gave up."

Not really, but they serve their purpose. Light, fast, fun... I've read them out of order 1, 3, 2 and next 4 (which I think will be the last). 3 was impossible, 2 is better, 1 was the best... I have very little hope for 4.

message 218: by [deleted user] (new)

Old Man and the Sea. The Old Man says that, repeatedly, when he is stuck out at sea with the fish. We tease Andreas with it, whenever time seems to drag.....

message 219: by [deleted user] (new)

Ahh, thanks... no wonder I don't remember. Hated that book.

message 220: by [deleted user] (new)

:P (Just do not ask my daughter her opinion....)

message 221: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I finished my other read and will be starting Hunger Games tonight. How far along are you?

message 222: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 20, 2012 11:51PM) (new)

chap 5 or maybe 6: They are just beginning the training for the Games.

message 223: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 173 comments Oh, The Hunger Games! Not sure if you guys will be interested in doing this but I'll just throw it out there: When the Games started, I kept a little "score card" for who was dead and who was still living. It helped me to keep up with how many competitors Katniss had remaining. At one point I knew more about them than she did. She forgot one of them while I only had to look at my score card and go Oh, I know who it is! LOL

message 224: by [deleted user] (new)

They were hard to keep track of, too, because too many of them were nameless.

message 225: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I've finished chapter 2 and have done my first official update. I will hopefully be caught up with you tonight Hayes

The score card thing sounds like a good idea but how did you do it if no names were provided?

Hayes, I didn't realize we weren't official "friends" so I just sent a friend request.

I find it interesting, in a profound way, to be starting this book after the massacre at the movie theater in Colorado. Especially when you add in the history of how Panem came into being, after the disasters, droughts, fires and fighting for what remained. It will be interesting to see how this recent event affect this read for me.

message 226: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 173 comments Oh that's easy. All you have to do is assign "boy" and "girl" by their district number. Like for the Careers I had B1 and B2 next to each other...on down the line. Then when it mentions the casualty by district number just cross that one off. :)

message 227: by [deleted user] (new)

Dawn (& Ron) wrote: "I've finished chapter 2 and have done my first official update. I will hopefully be caught up with you tonight Hayes"

I stopped reading yesterday just as Katniss was being taken into the arena (end of chapter 10). It's a good idea about the score card, but I'm just going to go with the flow. (I never try to work mysteries out either... too much work!)

message 228: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 173 comments *Oops, that was supposed to read: B1 and G1 (for boy and girl of district 1).

I understand Hayes and I didn't start reading the games with even an idea of a score card. But after a lot of casualties I was having trouble keeping up with who was left in the equation. So I skimmed back in order to create my score card and then I was like, Oh, this person, this one and this one are the ones Katniss should worry about. LOL. I just did it because I couldn't stand not knowing then and there.

message 229: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Hayes, I'm responding to your message you left on our profile page, figure it is easier to do here (I don't know why GR doesn't make that easier). You know how I found out we weren't officially friends? It was when I went to look up your status update on HG and you didn't show up in the "Friend's Reviews" section on the book's page and was I surprised. Glad we got that taken care of. BTW, did you get two requests from us? 1st time it said to answer question but didn't supply it, now that is a really good way to weed people out, ha-ha.

message 230: by [deleted user] (new)

Hiya! No, just the one request. That must be a recent bug, as it happened earlier today as well.

How far along are you? I've just been swallowed up by the story, but I gathered from a comment I saw that it's not thrilling you. I'm quite fond of YA stuff, actually, and find this is a very good specimen.

message 231: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Where do we want to discuss the book, on our status updates, here or start a thread on the buddy reads section here in the challenge?

Just posted my status updates. I'm starting chapter 6, where they have just circled around in the chariot to the cheers of the crowd. Hopefully I will catch up to you, it depends on whether you have read any more since your last update.

I don't try to solve mysteries myself but I'm going to try Margaret's score card idea just to keep things straight for myself. Since my head injury and having to relearn how to read, I have to keep notes anyway, for every book I read, so this will just be additional to my regular notes. With this being an area which might cause me confusion, I want to do what I can to avoid it, or that could slow down my reading.

message 232: by [deleted user] (new)

I went racing ahead and am in Part III already.

And I missed the bit about your head injury... when did that happen? Oh, my dear, are you okay?

We can discuss here, or on the status updates, as you prefer.

message 233: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I just saw you finished this already, I didn't read your review so it doesn't affect my perceptions. All of a sudden GR is working again. For some reason I haven't received any notifications tonight, and when I would reload a page or my home page nothing new came up, or I got that blasted girl. I was waiting to hear from you to get an idea where you were so I would know what to aim for and now it finally comes that you posted five and six hours ago, and I never got to see either of them, so frustrating.

If you still want to discuss it, can we do it in my status updates or here, that way I don't see your comments and such from your read. Hopefully that makes sense.

I like YA too and agree that the writing is good, although there have been a few passages that seemed off. I haven't been swept away by it and can't help but wonder how much the massacre in Colorado is affecting this for me. They are still in training yet so we shall see, I'm not hating it, just not enthralled.

Now that this is finally working I've got to sign off, on way too late.

message 234: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 22, 2012 11:38PM) (new)

Yes, I did finish it. I had a sleepless night and managed to polish it off. I haven't written a review yet, so not to worry. No spoilers to speak of. I have to take the son to physical therapy this morning, if I can get him out of bed: we were both struck with insomnia this night. Maybe it had something to do with the weather. It's raining this morning, thankfully.

BAck later.

message 235: by [deleted user] (new)

Here's my review of The Hunger Games.

message 236: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments I'm near the beginning of part II, my cat Spats is laying across it so I can't see the page numbers. I swear he has issues with this book, keeps trying to bite it or scratch it and I don't want to end up having to pay for this beat up library version, so it's good to see him curled up on top of it. I will hold off on your review and Jeannette's until after I've done mine.

I have to say I don't know why Katniss is so mad at Effie and Haymitch, who are trying to help her out to get sponsorship. I realize she doesn't agree with the whole system (can't blame her) and that they both rub her the wrong way. Oh well, it looks like Haymitch and Peeta took care of all that for her in a big way!

I'm sorry, I thought you had been in on a conversation about my head injury and were aware of it. I wouldn't have left such a comment out of the blue like that had I realized. I will try to explain it, probably via PM (don't want to bother others with it), but I'm too tired tonight to explain it all. I will say it is the reason why I read slower then most of you and is the reason I started doing reviews. Reviews were suggested as a form of cognitive help, to help with my reading comprehension. Now if only I could get the books themselves considered as medically necessary, I could write them off on my taxes. Wouldn't that be awesome! I can dream, can't I.

I don't envy trying to get to and do physical therapy after a sleepless night, that's no fun. Hah, the one thing that I can say is worse is doing cognitive rehab with little to no sleep. I hope everything worked out okay.

Funny about Spats and the book. Previous reader had a female cat, perhaps?

Dawn (& Ron) wrote: "I have to say I don't know why Katniss is so mad at Effie and Haymitch"

I know what you mean; it's a little overdone, but I think it's supposed to be the typical reaction of a grumpy adolescent

(Is she an adolescent? she's 16 so has probably reached puberty, but Collins doesn't talk at all about that aspect of things).

I have a feeling something will come out in the second book to explain the tension between Haymitch and Katniss and vice versa.

(I still have not decided if I will read #2. If I had a library nearby I would probably, but I don't really want to buy the thing.)

I think the important aspect is the mistrust that Katniss has, has always had, for people who do kind things for her. She's nervous and skittish around people, and then turns sullen (typical of that age, no? Sounds like all of my son's friends). She doesn't see that Peeta was trying to be kind when they were kids (have you read that bit about the bread yet? I can't remember where that comes up), that the girl who gave her the Mockingjay pin was trying to show support and esteem.

I can't decide if Peeta is to be trusted or not. Even in light of the events at the end of the book.

And I'm sorry you have slowed down with your reading. At least this one is pretty quick. There's not a lot of depth to it, although I felt there were a lot of great themes to talk about for young girls. Especially the bit about being true to yourself, being false with others, and the power of a good "costume" (literal or figurative).

So glad to see someone else with that opinion....we analyzed it to death in high school which didn't help.

message 239: by Dawn (& Ron) (new)

Dawn (& Ron) (furryreaders) | 456 comments Hayes, I was wondering what animals this book has been around for Spats to act that way. He's always had a book fetish, has to rub on every book I read, including the Kindle and now Topaz, but this is different.

I'm starting chapter 13, going into the second night of the games. Yes, I've read the scene where Peeta gave her the loaves of bread and where he stated he was in love with her. I don't trust him and have to admit that was an unexpected twist, his working with that group.

Where does her mistrust and inability to see kindness stem from? It can't all be from the abandonment by her mother's mental illness after her father's death, it seems deeper than that.

I'm not sure how much depth is here but I can't help but think about our entertainment today, the violence that is so commonplace and the emphasis on appearance and how that echoes through HG.

Regarding my reading, it has been 20 years since my injury and something I deal with daily. Although I still regret not being able to read as fast as I once did, I am more thankful that I was able to relearn how to read. So I'll take reading half as fast versus not being able to understand what I'm reading, ha-ha. And it has given me a greater appreciation of reading than most could never truly comprehend, for me it is almost like a lifeline.

Dawn (& Ron) wrote: "I'm not sure how much depth is here but I can't help but think about our entertainment today, the violence that is so commonplace and the emphasis on appearance and how that echoes through HG. "

I touch on that briefly in my review, but I didn't take a lot of time in that direction... opening a can of worms, that is. I didn't follow the whole shooting thing in the US, the nth shooting thing. What is it with the love affair with guns in the US? And the love affair with the awful reality shows too. HG really is a distillation of all of that, isn't it?

I totally agree and understand about your "reading lifeline". I think your perseverance is remarkable.

I wonder about that, too, now that you mention it. People show her kindness on a regular basis (think of the story about Prim's goat, later in the book), or the people who trade with her, Gale. etc.

@Hayes: I like Peeta. I would be disappointed if he turned out to be fake.

havr you tried clearing the cache, and all that stuff? sign out of gr. clear computer cache. sign back in. might work.

Sorry, I was using my cell phone.

If you sign out of GR and then sign back in that may (or may not) resolve the issue. But there have been a lot of bugs reported in the last few days, so it may be jsut that.

message 247: by MichelleCH (new)

MichelleCH (lalatina) It is happily fixed!! Laura was having the same issue. I agree about the bugs, there are so many little things I notice (like not getting notifications, missing the daily digest, etc). I just figure I am not the only one and I am sure that it is a monster maintaining this site.

I understood the cell phone talk :)
