Andreas doesn't seem to be a big fan of Tintin. He prefers Asterix and Obelix, and the Marsupilami from Spirou et Fantasio.

I like Asterix better too, but the French there is definitely out of my league... too much punning and wordplay.
Had never heard of the Marsupilami. I'm not a fan of comic type things. Every child in Italy has read at least 100 issues of "Topolino" Magazine by the age of 8 (and continue well into adolescence).

Then they graduate to "Diabolik"

Do you know Spirou and Fantasio? The Marsupilami is a creature they find in some sort of jungle. Disney optioned the images for a while, and may even have created a cartoon series, but it didn't go over well.
The really interesting thing about Asterix, is that the translators are top-notch. It's been translated into a bazillion languages, and they seem to have put in a big effort to get the wordplay right in each language. The quality fell off after the original author died, and the illustrator tried his hand at both writing and drawing. But, Lea & Andreas still quote from the books, in German, every so often.
Diabolik looks pretty intense!

In English; or in any other language(s)?

No, I've never heard of them.
The Asterix translators did a great job in English and in Italian. I wish my French were good enough.
And Diabolik is pretty tame, really. He has that naff suit, but his car is really cool.

(I wish I had such nice eyelashes!)
Spirou and Fantasio is another French/Belgian series that started pre-WWII

Jeanette,When I was in Sweden as a kid, my parents got me a Swedish version of the German comic Aria. I had, still have, no idea what it says. Have you read any of them?
I've never heard of it. Who wrote the comic; what year was this? Is it a girls' story?
Kinda looks like Sheena, Queen of the Jungle!
I've not read much Tin Tin and I've never heard of Spirou and Fantasio, but I adore Asterix. I've only read it in French, but we did buy some in translation for the boys at some point and I agree that the translation is excellent. (But still not as good as it is in French!). I have an enduring memory from about 25 years ago, when my older son was about five. We went on a family holiday to visit my cousin and her family. She is bi-lingual, but her kids don't speak much English. One night, my husband disappeared with our son and my cousin's son who was about the same age. Later on we found him sitting on the floor in the boys' bedroom, with a kid on each side. He was reading Asterix to them, in French first and then doing his own English translation for our son. They littlies were entranced and my husband was grateful that he had to translate French into English and not the other way round.
BTW - Lucky Luke was very popular with my boys and I think we have a few in French, but I've never read them.
Great image, Kim. I love how small children love having stories read to them. They get totally lost in that other world.
I remember Lucky Luke!
Tex Willer was big here in Italy

Lea and Andreas read Lucky Luke, and Asterix and Obelix together, in bed, every night, off and on, for years. They both laughed hysterically. Lea loves the Daltons.
Chris: Which volume of Aria do you own? I found quite a few of them on amazon.de, and I'll be happy to translate the amazon description for you.

Aria, tome 5 : Les Larmes de la déesse. I have a general idea, since I found descriptions in French. I was just wondering. I didn't know what was happening when I was kid, but it was a strong woman type of comic, despite her clothing.
My husband said he has never seen it before. The German title for volume 5 is Tears of the Goddess. I guess you can figure out as much about them as I can. ;) There doesn't even seem to be a good wiki about them. Any reason your mom bought this one for you?
And it had a picture of a girl on it? :)
Oh, good, some of the good stuff, too. :)
finished #21, the Barrie Biog...
Now I can concentrate on ATo2C!
Jeannette wrote: "Oh, good, some of the good stuff, too. :)"I have various Asterix books in English (from the first to Asterix and Son), some in Swedish, German, and Norwegian.
I started this one eons ago!

Were impressed with all the bilingual and trilingual folks here. And we've never read nor heard of any of those series that have been mentioned and pictured. Have we missed out on something?
Asterix is definitely worth reading, in any language.
I'm a rank beginner compared to Laura... 5 or 6 languages she speaks, I think.
Which series do you mean Dawn? The cartoons that Jeannette and Chris were talking about? I haven't heard of most of those either.

Dawn(& Ron), you haven't read Asterix? The story of the unconquered tribe in Gaul? The tribe that the Romans fear? The tribe with the druid, Getafix?
I love the names... they're funny in Italian too. The bard Cacofonix is my favorite.
Yes, Hayes, those mentioned by Jeannette, Chris and you, including this Asterix everyone is talking of.Laura of Brazil with the gorgeous black and white cat avatar knows 5 or 6 languages! No wonder she reads so fast, wow!
Hayes wrote: "The bard Cacofonix is my favorite."The bard's French name is Assurancetourix ("Assurance tous risques" = comprehensive insurance). The name in English is more descriptive, even if it does take away the pun. I like that they managed to get a double pun into the English version of the dog's name, Dogmatix in English which is Idéfix ("Idée fixe" = obsession) in French.
There's a quiz you can take to see how much you know. The site can be set to English, French and a few other languages.

I got 9 out of 20 correct, but I almost never read Asterix. Can't find them here!

I got 10, but that was a tough quiz. Does anybody remember the names of all those one-time characters?
I really enjoy the puns, and probably don't understand all of them, especially in German.

The geo quiz is fun too! Can you find the ancient cities on the map?

Finished #22 The Golden Compass, working on a review.
Will be reading Cloud Atlas in a bit, after ATo2C, off challenge. It's a BC bookring, so I have to get to that right away.

I'm interested in your review of The Golden Compass.
Did anyone else see the French Fans at the Euro France vs. Ukraine game? There were two men sitting together dressed as Asterix and Obelix. But the guy who was Obelix, didn't have the chest. He was, however, better than the Swedish fan dressed as Pippi Longstocking. A fake red wig with a five o'clock shadow does not work.
That would have been fun to see.....
