I would count it even though I'm not in charge. It would be like having a book at home, but then checking it out of the library - I would think that one would be able to read the library version of that book even though it was just checked out.

Misfit & Jemidar: Yes, if you bought the book for yourself pre-2012, then it can count (even if you have now gotten a newer version.
I'm so glad you asked this Misfit. I'd ask a similar question but I think it was on the 'Pikes Peak' intro. I'd picked up a library Kindle edition of a previously purchased book. I'm so glad to officially know that this is indeed okay and will go ahead and do it again for those heavier books.
Wow, I hadn't been including my graphic novels/manga into my reading equations, since I go through those so fast. I could easily jump up to Mt Vancouver with that logic.

Yes. All books (except ARCs--advance reading copies) count provided they were owned by you prior to 2012. Audio, e-books, graphic novels, children's books--as long as they were on your TBR stacks, not your child's.

Can I count a book that I mostly read, but skimmed to the ending? It was a book I own, but would never have picked up but for the challenge?

I will go with the same answer I gave for books started, but not finished before January 2012: If the book you are talking about had 50% or more left unread, then I would be willing to count it. I would think that "mostly" and "skimmed to the end" probably means that you read more than 50% of the book previously. You know how much you already read--if you feel like it was enough of a new read to count, then go ahead.

I read iit this year, but purchased it last year. It would still be unread if I hadn't been in the challenge. I have to say I'm glad I got to it, even though I did not enjoy it.

Ah...got it. I didn't get that the first time--certainly, if you read most of it this year and had to skim bits to finish it, then you may definitely count it.

Bev, both my husband and I are both doing this challenge but only use the one GR account. Is it okay to enter our two halfway checkpoint lists separately?
Oh good, I just wanted to make sure and didn't want anyone to think we were cheating. Plus I want Ron to get his own props for his accomplishment, considering how late he started. We, or I, will try to get them posted tonight. Thanks for the quick reply!

When I do continue reading, may I start the next level MT Kilimanjaro with book 41? Or do I start all over again with number 1?
Surely not back to number 1 that would be super harsh and more a trial than a challenge - mind you depends on the mood Bev is in I suppose :)
Yes you can keep on hiking with 40 books already under your belt..... Guess Bev's in a good mood today. ;-)

I joined this group ages ago and then got busy, but I can at least manage Pike's Peak. I'll post my list later on, including the ones I've read already since the beginning of the year.
Hiya!
I think the Count should count as 2 books ;o)
It was good, wasn't it?

I'd be happy to adopt your suggestion, Hayes. :)
Hello, ladies.Yeah, seriously! The Count should definitely count as two books if not three! Loved it, though.
So just double checking -- I have a paper copy of Sorcery & Cecilia I bought a few years ago and now I bought a newer Kindle edition when it was on sale... so even if I'm reading the post-2012 Kindle, it still counts? Or am I wrong?

Yes, the Kindle version counts. As long as you owned a copy of whatever it is you want to read prior to 2012, I have no problem with you reading a newer copy--whether it's on Kindle or if you get a paperback version that will be easier to hold than a heavy hardback or even listen to one on tape/CD. You just need to be clearing one off your pre-2012 personal mountain. I will confess....I got Sense & Sensibility on CD from the library so I could listen to it on a long road trip. It's been sitting in hardback on my shelf for years. Finally cleared it off! And I'm getting ready to listen to another book on CD. It's been on my owned and unread list for years.....and now that I put it down for several challenges (including my own) I can't find the darn thing. [I suspect that's a sign that I have too many books....] BUT once I listen to and then find it, off the TBR stack it goes!

I just found this challenge and am glad that I did...this will inspire me to keep reading and clearing off my shelves...

Welcome, Ivy! Be watching later this year...I'll be posting for another round for 2013. I've barely touched my mountain range.

I will for sure want to do this again next year...I have acquired quite a few books this year that are calling my name wanting to be read but I really want to get the oldest ones off the mountain first if at all possible...
So if I decide to keep going for Mt Vancouver, I should just start a new thread over in that section?

Yes, if you want to keep climbing, go ahead and start a Vancouver thread.
