Music while reading.
I do like Bach but don't have much classical music so I just listen to classic fm
Usually anything with harpsichord when I'm reading Victorian. For the latter bit of this one I was listening to Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross's soundtrack for the new Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movie, which lent it a nice sense of foreboding. I think that's going to be my new mystery music.
I like to listen to RainyMood. I can run the track on my Kindle while reading a book, and it helps focus my mind on the text.
I tend to have to read while keeping an eye on the kids so my background music is whatever movie or musical toy they are playing with.But I like calm background stuff if I am alone.
I have a problem with silence so I really listen to just about anything all the time. I have a couple mellow music stations on Pandora I listen to a lot while reading.
Dragon Age 2 soundtrack. Epic fantasy dork music.
I'm one of the few who prefers to read in silence it seems. If I do listen to music, it has to be instrumental (ie, no vocals to distract me). Sometimes I'll use instrumental music to drown out noisy neighbors, etc.
I'm the opposite - I like absolute silence when I read. I don't want anythignto take me out of the story, Weird, I know. Now when I'm working on fiddly tasks like spreadsheets or powerpoints, then I like to put the headphones and play my music (muse, the clash, roxy music, old glitter rock, etc). It may seem strange, but it makes me focus on the task and not overthink it.
I can't listen to music while I read. I find it really disctracts me while I'm reading and I'll end up listening to the words of the song and think it was in the book. I've tried putting on classical but it swings my mood about the book at times..lol
But I can easily work to music though.
Ditto Jamie -- silence while reading (infuriating shrieking biddies at the pho place today while I was trying to get my precious lunch read on, gah!), music while working. I'm a photographer so there's no work reading, and I can chair boogie while picture processing.
Just thought Bach was very fitting seeing as its Julia's favorite. So I tried out the pandora Bach channel and it seemed to help me stay focused.
@Laura, Jamie, Karo: Same here! I also prefer silence. However, when writing I listen to all kinds of music. Right now it's Portishead and Amy Winehouse. :)

If the work doesn't require a lot of thought, classical music (non-vocal) is great. Also, it quiets the monkeys in my mind so I can read.
Silence or light tracks from Anime shows - Most of this book was set against the OST of Mantantei Loki Ragnarok

Just finished watching a video on DakotaLapse set to a Bear McCreary score. Very cool. He is one of my favorite composers.
I'm someone that likes it quiet while reading as well, but I'm getting pretty good at ignoring everything around me when I read. Like my boyfriend and his loud games. I've learned from that to zone everything out. Sometimes is creates problems because then someone starts talking to me and I don't even notice it until it's too late and they are angry. But geeze man... I'm reading. Haha.
For reading, silence is my default (often accented by the purr of a cat).When I do listen to music, it's in the form of a playlist tailored specifically for the book at hand.
The music is usually ambient type stuff, so it won't be distracting. It's about immersion.
A particularly lovely match was listening to Lisa Gerrard (most of the Whale Rider score plus selected pieces from The Silver Tree) while reading Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea series.
it depends on my mood when it comes to music while reading, i am accustomed to reading while zoning out the background nosies from my wee bro playing the xbox and my mums a hairdresser from home so frequent hairdryers lol but somedays i find music useful to block out the world, nosie of my choosing vs. random noise - like jennifer rardins 1st novel, once bitten twice shy, has been permanently imprinted in my head to Newton faulkners album, so everytime i hear it certain songs have me replaying scenes of the book - can be distracting on the train on my way to uni- lol but fun :D :)
I can't listen to none of that Mass Effect/Dragon's Age/Bear McCreary music. Angries up my blood to much and sets me to howlin' and standin' atop rubble in a majestic pose.Most of my music is from the 1910s-1940s, so I just stick with that. Who doesn't want to read Gail Carriger and Jim Butcher to the soothing sounds of "Goodbye-ee" and "The Rose of No Man's Land"?
it depends on my mood, there are times that I listen to music others I just zoned out while the tv is playing in the background. I've come to find out that if I listen to a particular band for too long while reading a book I ended up associating that book with that band from that moment on so that whenever I listen to said band again even years after reading said book, it brings back the emotions experience while reading it which its not always a positive thing..(that's why I don't listen to muse any more..damn you twilight lol)
I'm another for quiet while reading... music, even instrumental, is too distracting for me. I can tune out other sounds pretty well, but for some reason music is harder to ignore.
My go to reading/studying music is Bear McCreary's Battlestar Galactica score.
I can listen to music while reading but it then becomes background noise to me eventually. I generally turn on a fan or something with a steady whirr instead. Current noises: cars going by on highway, washing machine spinning, clrrs from my computer, wrrs from the fridge , television playing Moonshine on Discovery, and Pugg the Assassin Kitteh making growling sounds in his sleep
I was thinking music that fits the books. Like I know Poe had her album haunted fit to go along with house of leaves by her brother. Not necessarily something that was made to fit, but goes along with the book. Like the wall and wizard of oz lol

I am the same way. I usually can't seem to focus with music on like you, Kelley, but if I need to drown out something more distracting, like it seems you do Jean, my go-to is the soundtrack to the "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" with other instrumental works thrown in.
I tend to read wherever I am. This results in a variety of background noise to filter out from the book. I vary listening to music softly in the background to silence when reading preference wise.One of my best memories though is going to a free performance in Grant Park of Aaron Copeland's Fanfare for the Common Man. I was reading Tolkien, The return of the King and had just gotten to the point where Frodo, Sam and Gollum were hanging on the stairs above Minas Morgul when the enemy host departed its gates to go battle the army of man. Right at that moment, the most dramatic part of the fanfare started playing and just perfectly matched what I was reading.
I've never been able to recreate that magic of blending fiction and music while reading.

I have a mixed list including classic, metal, country, synth, pop, and a little of everything in between... And I can really recommend all the twilight-movies-soundtracks for reading!

I find it rather hard to listen and read at the same time, haha. It ends up with me reading a line over and over again, without absorbing anything because my mind's too preoccupied with listening to the music.Sounds like a fun skill to have though! Especially if the pieces fit what's happening in the scene xD
For this book, Martha Wainwright, Gin Wigmore, Amy Winehouse's last album Lionness and Devil Doll. This book is really making me want to listen to great women singers.

I thought the part about reading while listening to a concert was interesting. For me that is sort of a reverse situation. When I am listening to live music, I can't do anything else but fully concentrate on the music. When reading I like non vocal music in the background, well, now with earphones from an MP3 player as a filter to other distractions.
Loreena McKennitt seems to be perfect reading/writing music. Usually lyrics distract me, but her voice is like an instrument. Some of her songs are perfect for atmosphere.
Mostly I read in silence but sometimes music gives me great background. For example I have no idea why but during reading Stephen's King "Runner" I couldn't start to read without Prodigy in my ears :D... and I'm mostly a metal music type. But I'm a kind of person who takes his book everywhere so I also learned how to cut off from any noises around me :).
Right now I like to listen to Sarah Brightman and Florence and the machines, especially the new song that was in the trailer for season 2 Game of thrones trailer

I've been finding E.S. Posthumus goes well with these books. At least the titles so far.

I love listening to music when reading, it all depends on the book im reading to what im listening to, but it makes the hours and the book go fast.
Instrumental music only when reading for me. It's easy enough for me to tune out, but the headphones do let people know not to bother me.
no music for me, I find it totally distracting. I'll get all wrapped in the song

For this book, since now I'm at page 330, that some classical music would go along with this, like. Bach lol
