For Victorian romances I listen to classical music.
For everything else I listen to Drone Zone online radio.. it's ambient music!

I am a child of noise. I need a little background white noise, or semi distant traffic. Classical, opera, jazz work fine for me. I get totally distracted by Blues(weird, right??) or anything to 'sharp' or edgy. Ambient and light trance, or even solo instrumentals help me set the mood. I'm weird like that, I'll loop a certain song if I feel I get in to character easier.
It depends on the book, when I'm reading, and also my mood. Sometimes I need silence. When I want music it's instrumental or nonsense lyrics (like E.S. Posthumus). Music made for movie trailers has been a good source for good background music as they have many different moods. Game and movie soundtrack are great too, as well as classical, New Age, World music, etc. Some of my favorites are Two Steps from Hell, Immediate, Groove Addicts, Enya, Loreena McKennitt, Blackmore's Night, World of Warcraft game music, Han Zimmer, Steve Jablonsky, and John Williams
I put rainymood on my kindle, so if I listen to anything while reading it's the calming sounds of rain.
For some reason I can't concentrate on anything in complete silence. I need some kind of background noise whether it be the sound of cars passing by or music. If I feel like listening to music while I read I put on instrumental music on low volume. Today I put on the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack while reading the 'The Iron Duke'.

For myself, music, provides the mortar to fill the chinks in my mind that would let other trains of thought escape and crowd out what I am trying to concentrate on.
some Do As Infinity " Gates of Heaven" スガシカオ (Suga Shikao)Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル)nana halo joney cash and just about aney thing i can lissnen to while reading and some times i just go to tatw for a long mix and soke in the tub
The good thing about being an author is everything is a tax deduction. I can't write w/o music so it's a business expense! I even create playlists so the books have a soundtrack. Yet when I'm reading I usually have the TV on. No silence. Ever.

Yet when I'm readi..."Actually, I don't think that's true. I think you'd have to ONLY listen to the music while writing in order for it to be a business expense. You can deduct "how-to" writing books, research books, a computer, and word processing software, but I don't think that play lists are deductible. You should check with a tax adviser on that.
Even Mr. Rogers couldn't deduct his trademark sweater as a business expense because he could wear it outside of work. But he could have deducted his clothing if he'd worn a vampire costume, which generally wouldn't be worn in public... or perhaps it could these days :-)
I prefer to have something chilled on in the background and sometimes I'll have the same album on repeat in the background. I can't hear Scarlet's Walk by Tori Amos without thinking about The Unfinished Tales.
Rosanna wrote: "It depends on the book, when I'm reading, and also my mood. Sometimes I need silence. When I want music it's instrumental or nonsense lyrics (like E.S. Posthumus). Music made for movie trailers has..."Agreed, Rosanna.
When I was in college, I used to study with the radio on all the time. Now that I'm working on much harder projects, though, I pretty much stick to movie soundtracks. One of my favorite things to do is look for library books while listening to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack. So epic.
My husband and son like noise. They have the television on when they are playing games. They always have to have lots of background noise.Me, I don't understand. I like music but I prefer to concentrate on that and not have it going when I'm reading. If I want to watch TV, that's what I watch, I don't have it on while I play games.
I guess I just can't multitask that way.
My mother taught me to deal with my add through books. If I could do my work as fast and well as I could then I could read. it also became my escape from my classmates as such I don't often notice anything while reading. I become so absorbed out of habit it becomes a problem point of fact.
It depends on my mood, my attention span, the book I'm reading, and what song is playing. Sometimes, I'll leave the tv on and read just to add a little background noise and most of my reading music is instrumental C:
I don't know why but I prefer to be in absolute silence whilst I read. This is probably why I mostly read at bedtime. Other than that it is the complete opposite when I'm writing, I love to listen to instrumental songs (without vocals).
I'm in on the silence preferences. I've actually put headphones on and not had anything playing just to insist on the quiet. Instrumental is sometimes ok, but really depends on the book I'm reading.
I second somafm.com because they really do play good reading music. I usually listen to Digitalis or Drone Zone.
I can listen to music when reading but if I'm by myself, I prefer silence. If other people are around (at work for instance) I do it do drown them out a little. Soundtracks are good. Skyrim has a great one. Can't listen to Mass Effect soundtracks because then I want to game. Also post-rock/instrumental music is great. Bands like Hammock, Eluvium, The American Dollar, and Slow Dancing Society are all great. No vocals to distract me.
