Yep, we had this discussion before about the meaning of 'historical'. We decided that a book is historical if it was set at least 15-20 before it was written, not before now.
May I suggest Nathanial Hawthorne? Other people suggestions in this group have been great so far. Read one / two great books that I would never otherwise considered to read.
(Someone mentioned "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" well I live in Brooklyn and there is more than one tree.)
