THE BEST CHARACTER IS L !!!! :)
L is my favorite. Awesome is what describes L.
In the beginning Light, but when he lost his memory, he was pathetic, so overall in the series my opinion would be L
L and light's shinigami! awsom!
i like both kira and L,, but..my heart has owned by L,,
he's so smart,, cool,, unique,, aaa...
I like L, but i really like Misa Misa she makes me laugh.

Yes Melissa I've read all the Manga and 1 novel and have 2 Movies :) I Love Death Note, and love Ken'ichi Matsuyama as L

Ryuuk my dear anime/manga lovers. You forget about the most perfect shinigami ever created! L is the perfect tool of good, but look at this shinigami... he created chaos and action at maximum level, leaving us to discover traits of personality in every character depicted in this manga.
The best character . . .? Hmm . . . I'd say Lind L Tailor.. . . just kidding. It's L. Duh.
I like Misa but no one beats L.
Its now a fact that L is he best.. The most of you guys like L the best.

Death Note is a different manga from other Shonen Jump titles and overall is a different kind of story from what most are used to. The characters are all interesting in their own ways and some are just down right fascinating. I will admit I'm not too much a fan of Misa or Light Yagami for their twisted perception of justice or how Light has a god complex. That I cannot stand. L Lawliet on the otherhand is a very complex and intriguing character since despite being the world's greatest detective he acts atypical of the title. You would expect a Sherlock Holmes persona but L does what he wants, eats sugar, slumps in his chair, wears the same clothes everyday. Yet despite his outward appearance he is a very strong character in Death Note and even after he is written out of the saga his influence is still prevalant. That I think qualifies for the best character in Death Note.

Light, easily, but I seriously don't like the second half of the manga, which seems forced and all.
