Amy I plan to read during the Super Bowl, even though I'll be at my mother-in-law's Super Bowl party with all my in-laws. I am not a football fan at all (I enjoy the commercials though), and my in-laws all know and accept this (I usually read every year). Anyone else plan to read rather than watch the game?

Kathleen Brooks I am going to be working on my next book, but same concept! It's funny, because I like football, but I am just not into it this year. What are you going to be reading? My friend just dropped off the newest Nora Roberts, but I haven't started it yet.

☯Emily Ginder I would prefer to read, but have to take my son to a party!

Elisa Santos Might i ask what is it,exactly?

Terri Bearhope Is it American Football??

It is the final game of American football for the season. The hype is like the final game of the World Cup.

I'm almost done with Persuasion. After that, I will re-read the section of Night I assigned to my 9th grade English class to have read for tomorrow. I haven't tried Nora Roberts - I should, I know many people who love her. Good luck writing!

American professional football's final championship game. Major hype, huge TV commercial day. I think the TV commercials are the best - they all compete for the funniest, most memorable commercial. Sorry, I forget this is a world-wide book readers site!

Its the football championship. Big deal here in the States.

I'll be reading "The Stand" by Stephen King. Its just my husband and me, so we invited my dad over so my husband has someone else who's interested in it. haha!

I remember Night. I love Persuasion. The letter is so romantic. I hope you are enjoying it.

Molly I'll be studying of an Anthropology test. So I'll be reading about human evolution, genetics, race, traits, and all that jazz. If I finish early I'll probably finish up rereading The Know-It-All.

Erin WV I intended to read but I got caught up watching Downton Abbey!

It's not my favorite Austen, but Persuasion is wonderful; I like it better every time I read it.

☯Emily Ginder You all missed a great game!

I read and watched at the same time. It was a great game. Very evenly matched.

I actually did end up watching quite a bit of the game (more for the commercials and half-time show though) and didn't read a ton. I corrected some student papers first, which was a priority. I am enjoying Persuasion (haven't gotten to the letter yet), but it's not going to be my favorite Austen. My heart belongs to Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth.

Breezy Persuasion is my absolute favorite. But in an attempt to appreciate Pride and Prejudice I've started the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman series by Pamela Aidan; which I had open during the Super Bowl, but didn't read during the 4th quarter cause the game was so good.

Persuasion is my favorite too with P&P making a close second. I think it is my favorite because the characters are older. They have made mistakes and have learned from those mistakes. I love book 1 and 3 of the Pamela Aidam series. Book 2 was good but it seemed very gothic to me.

Lisa Westerfield I went to a party. I tried to buy a book on the way, but Sam's Club didn't have what I wanted so I had to rely on my iPhone for reading material.

Yes, I am quite the party animal.

I loved Madonna's performance and the guy who squatted before the touchdown (of course for that I had to watch the replay).

Lorraine I was able to read with the game on, so could look up from time to time. I just finished the latest Mr. and Mrs. Darcy mystery "The Deception at Lyme" and since I had just finished "Persuasion" it completed the story very well.

message 20: by Jaye Latts (new)

Jaye Latts My television was turned off, so that I could finish Mockingjay (final book of The Hunger Games)! Love it when there's nothing good on the telly - great time to read!

☯Emily Ginder I am now watching the Giants get the keys to NYC! (Sorry to the Packers' fan.)

Elisa Santos Thank you. I have always heard the expression but did not knew what exactly was.

Maybe the equivalent here, in Europe may be the European Soccer Challenge that happens every 4 years? It´s very big event but it wouldseem not so big as the Superbowl.

The Superbowl happens every year here. We have football divided into two divisions, the NFC and AFC. I don't exactly how teams were divided into the NFC or AFC, but they play each other and eliminate to get to the Superbowl championship. Then, each side, the AFC and the NFC have a team representing them, (whoever came out on top in the playoffs), and the AFC and NFC play against each other for the Superbowl trophy, and ultimately, the title of best team for the year. There are 32 football teams in America, and only two can play in the Superbowl. So, basically throughout the year, they eliminate each other to get to the Superbowl championship, which happens every year. Does that help? I think I said everything correctly...haha!

Mara Definitely read through the Super Bowl. Don't care for football at all. Now if it were jousting . . . ;) But, no, I read through it.

Elisa Santos Thank you Kathryn.

It´s not exactly like here, but our craze is soccer, so a bit different. I have an american friend that lived here for many years and she always said to me that Americans found soccer boring, that they like action, and that soccer is a bit still, not enough going on to catch the attention - is it true?

☯Emily Ginder That is true. Soccer is boring most of the time. However, baseball is just as boring and it is popular in the US.

message 27: by Mara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mara Soccar is getting fairly popular over here now, actually. I don't think it'll ever be as popular as football or baseball (more's the pity; I would actually watch a soccar match), but its popularity has grown.

Elisa Santos Maybe much dued to David Beckham being there on the La Galaxy? IDK, here people loose their heads over it: they kick, scream their heads off, etc but it´s like 2 separate worlds: in one we have Cristiano Ronaldo, Mourinho and company and on the other we have a game - and i have to say that i know nothing of footbal - that most of us, here in Europe, do not understand, that is played by men bumping in to each other with full body coverage and that has if not more at least as many fan as soccer.

message 29: by Mara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mara *laughs* Yes, Americans definitely don't get as crazy about soccar as all that. ;) I could be very wrong about this, but I think the rules for football are fairly similar to rugby. Again, I could be very wrong - the only sports I understand are jousting, archery, chariot racing, and tennis.

Where do you get to see jousting and chariot racing? I am fairly curious about it.....
