It was the best book I read from all of 2009. Observing life through the eyes of autistic Jason Blake was unforgettable; seeing the similarities and differences between his and my own natural thought processes was revelatory, and his unique brand of wisdom taught me more about life than all but a select few other books that I've ever read. Anything But Typical would have been my pick for the 2010 Newbery Medal.
I'm pretty excited to read it because of that. To see life differently into someone's eyes is was we usually do when reading a book but rarely are we able to do it through a person who has a disability even though it's not that actual persons but I read somewhere that the author had experienced with one of his sons I think had cerebral palsy. I'll have to check again.Who won instead?
The 2010 Newbery Medal winner was When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, the author that I actually heard speak in person only a few weeks after the award was announced. I did like When You Reach Me, but the emotional depth and profundity of Anything But Typical was, in my eyes, better than that of any other book from its Newbery class.

I was thinking of Stuck in Neutral. It's so similar and I was looking for it in library earlier that day.
I really liked Anything But Typical. It was interesting to see the perspective of a autistic boy. I loved the story he created with the dwarf and then what Aaron told him: He says, "But hey, wouldn't it be weird-if Bennu wakes up from the operation, and he's all tall and stuff, and then he doesn't recognize himself in the mirror?"
