Was there any? Was it just me, or did the characters not change at all during this series?

Bella went from just wading though her life, letting the waves take her wherever to someone who knows what she wants and does what it takes to get it. She learned to stand up for herself and for those who she loves. Edward was overprotective and controlling, but he slowly learned that he doesn't always know what's best and he accepts the fact that he can't control everyone all the time.
They developed slightly. Rosalie and Bella developed a better relationship. Bella DID turn into a vampire. Edward and Bella's relationship developed.
Only if you coutn getting more annoying as a change. :PNo, I don't believe there was any real character development in the story, which was part of why I hated it so much.
There wasn't really any character development at all in the story. None of the main characters really grew as people or learned lessons. They're all Mary Sues to be honest.
Apart from Leah, not really. Bella becoming a vampire isn't development...it's more like a labotomy.
I think really the only characters that sort of develop are Jacob, Leah and Rosalie. Jacob basically grows up. He takes responsibility and learns to think things through. He comes to terms with Bella being a vampire in the end and some other things.
Leah comes to terms with being the only female...umm... shifter? not really a werewolf.. but anyway yeah and she sort of grows up a bit too.
And Rosalie opens up a little and accepts Bella's choice.
Other then that, no, now you mention it there is really no character development. So yeah...

as for the others, I'd say that jasper learned that he's not as enslaved by his "vampire instincts" as he thought. I think that jacob changed a lot from the sweet innocent happy-go-lucky guy he started out as. sam came to learn that (like edward) he doesn't always know what's best. leah overcame her resentment. rosalie became less judgmental. I don't really see any change in carlisle, esme, or alice, though.
The book doesn't span many years. Bella does go through a depression in the second book and some isolation, but she doesn't change much. I think it's hard to expect people who are 90 years or older (like Edward) to do a lot of changing. Take a look at your grandparents. They are pretty set in their ways. :) I do think Stephanie Meyer describes her characters so consistently that the reader feels like she knows them and I wonder if making them change would effect her consistency in a negative way.Comment written by Andrea Cefalo, author of The Fairytale Keeper: Avenging the Queen
I've tried to see character development, and I've failed every single time. The characters are primarily static, but, if I have to pick at least one character who changed even slightly, I would say that Jacob changed ever so slightly. Even so, his transformation felt a bit forced; if Bella's daughter had never come into existence, would he have moved on?

But before he died, My G-dad raised hell as a kid, fought in two world wars, killed more people than I can imagine then became a vicar. He made it to 92.
That's character development. He was awesome!
