SOLVED. An alien girl from a water planet has the ability to transfer to alternative outcomes or "lines" of her life as it lays out before her. I thought it was called "Down Shift" but that doesn't seem to be the case. [s]

The protagonist is an alien girl who has the ability to change probability (and by extension reality it self) by simply stepping through to another. If the building she was in was on fire then she could simply "walk" to another time line/reality where the building wasn't on fire - or any other outcome. The book has three parts to it and in each part the protagonist changes (once pretty drastically if I remember correctly). In the second phase she's a mercenary and assassin. She plugs a "Supercharger" into a citizen's "cool suit" and freezes him to death in the streets. She won't accept currency as payment since she never knows if she'll be able to spend it later with all the line shifting she does. She takes things like diamonds and drugs as her payment because she knows she can unload them later for currency. I thought it was written by Nancy Kress but I've been researching that and I can't find it in her bibliography. I also thought the book was called "Down Shift" but a search of that isn't bringing up any books either. :( Thank you for your time and consideration in helping me with this.
