Something from the Nightside by Simon R. Green

Review
A friend of mine that reviewed this book said it well -- this might have been a great book if it had been written differently. Initially I should say upfront that I prefer character driven stories and if a story is plot driven, then it takes a very strong plot and complex world building for me to be a fan of the book Something from the Nightside is not a character driven book and it is not a book with a strong storyline or strong world building. I think I may have not been the right audience for this book and that there are others out there who would like it.
So here are the strengths:
Interesting world descriptions
Interesting take on the supernatural and the creepy
Plot driven (if you like this sort of think)
Would make a decent movie
The writing is descriptive in such a way that the reader can imagine the scenery. The writing is almost akin to describing a painting.
The book is short, I listened to the narration and it lasted just under 6 hours at regular speed. But I was bored, the narration was okay however, the story did not hold my attention. I ended up listening to it on 2X speed. There are some twists and turns throughout the storyline. There are a few number of funny one liners and observations. Ultimatley, though, I felt like the story was strung together by witty observations and comments, detailed descriptions and some fight/flight scenes. I likely will not be reading the next book in the series.

Review: It was awesome! I love learning more about the Fae. Love the action in the series too, and I love seeing Mac kick some butt.
I just wish there was more about freakin' Barrons. Ugh! He drives me up the wall! (view spoiler)
Killer cliffhanger at the end. If I hadn't been having BDB withdrawal, I would have dove right into

Review: I tried reading this one once before, but I could not get into it. So, I found the Playaway at the library and gave it a try. I almost gave up again, but I stuck with it because so many people love this series. It did get much better after the half-way point. I think Marr has too much unnecessary exposition in this book and the book probably could have been cut in half.
I think Keenan is not developed enough as a character; I realize he is a fae, but he seems so complacent and a bit boring. If I were Aisling, I don't think he'd do it for me either. Good looking is one thing, but a man needs a personality, too.
I think I'll try the second in the series..sometimes those are better than the first book.

I'll be finished with it tomorrow. I'm plugging away at these...

Going to start it soon

Review: Wow! What an interesting premise: girls die at age 20 and boys die at age 25, but the "first generation" seems to live forever.
Rhine is one of the wives of Linden, son of eccentric scientist, Housemaster Vaughn. She discovers some unusual behavior in the basement, suspecting horrible things from the Housemaster. Her goal is so escape the house and find her twin brother.
DeStefano writes clearly and keep the flow of the book going with little twists and turns.

I'm not a big movie watcher, but I might get my hands on that one.

It is really good. Huge - 510 pages - but good.

This would give us 3 stamps in one row and if we get our Free Space (dependent on me finishing in the next two days mine) and paranormal mystery - we will have 3!

I love all of the Kitty books. They ROCK!

Anyone got any recommendations for something similar?

Oh, I'm definitely going to. I have Book 1 just sitting here. It has a mischievous look in it's eye. :-D

Absolutely, Positively is the third installment of the Lucy Valentine series. Lucy's family has a psychic matchmaking ability in which they can see people's auras and match them with others of compatible auras. Lucy lost her ability to see auras when she was a teenager and now specializes in using her ability to find lost loves in addition to helping the police and families find missing people and objects. Lucy is faced with two cases in this book that involve reuniting a woman with her first love and finding a missing elderly man that is a friend of her grandmother's. Her partner and boyfriend, Sean, helps in solving each of these cases. Heather Webber writes a wonderful balancing act between the mystery, paranormal and romance elements that make this such an entertaining book. I really hope there will be more to come in this series. It will be interesting to see where Lucy and Sean's relationship heads next. I'm also interested in finding out what happens with Lucy's parents, brother and friends. I will definitely read more of Heather Webber's books as well as her alter ego, Heather Blake.

So the 2nd book you're talking about reading now is the 2nd one in the Kane Chronicles or the Heroes of Olympus?

This is the second book in Lora Leigh's Breeds series. Roni Andrews is heartbroken when she is rejected by her childhood crush, Taber Williams. As the rest of the world finds out about the genetically altered Feline Breeds, it is revealed that Taber is one of them. When Roni realizes he has marked her as his mate, her life is in danger and she has to trust him for protection. This is an emotionally charged book with a lot of sexual tension throughout. It was fun to watch Roni and Taber's relationship evolve after it had built up over time instead of the usual "love at first sight" as in some books. Roni's resilience is to be admired after all she endured in her life. I really enjoyed seeing recurring characters from the first book and the progression of their lives since then. The tension between Sherra and Kane was sizzling and I'm looking forward to reading their book next.
