Jeann (Happy Indulgence) (happyindulgence) | 1151 comments One Grave at a Time (Night Huntress, #6) by Jeaniene Frost
Shelf: Paranormal Romance
Finished: 12/03/2012
Rating: ★★★

Thoughts:

A disappointing read for me, it seemed this book lacked what made the entire series so great. Too large focus on the plot and not enough of anything else! Also where did Vlad go off to? He's one of my favourite characters. Kramer and Madigal made me extremely annoyed.

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) (happyindulgence) | 1151 comments City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare
Shelf: Paranormal Mystery
Finished: 14/03/2012
Rating: ★★★★

Thoughts:

An easy read for me even though the book was at 490 pages. I was really intrigued with the unique setting even though it did heavily borrow from Buffy, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. I did have some gripes about it - mainly writing inconsistencies and the leading male character but all in all a great read.

I think I'm gonna go with The Alloy of Law (Mistborn, #4) by Brandon Sanderson . Also, I'm WOEFULLY behind on Dead Until Dark -- I was distracted by schoolwork, midterms, and another book that is taking forever, but I'm on spring break now, so I should be able to knock everything out of the way. :)

Shelf: Magic
Finished: 18/03/2012

Review:
A fun book. Not too long. About the underwater world of Atlantis where people have supernatural abilities like telepathy, shifting etc. Will be reading the next two books in the series too!

Carlyn | 466 comments Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher

Shelf: Paranormal Mystery
Date Finished: 17/03/2012
Rating: 3 Stars

I have been looking forward to the dresden books for a while now. Most of my book friends love them so I thought I would give it a try. My thoughts are, it was okay not the best book in the worls but it was good.

The premise is great a wizard working in modern times with electronics that go wrong around him, a talking skull named Bob and a contact with the police make for an interesting read.

The promise of the series is better than the actual book itself but I would like to see some more characters in this world, but since there are several more books in this series i'm sure I won't be disappointed!

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) (happyindulgence) | 1151 comments Hey guys, I think I might go with either Eldest (Inheritance, #2) by Christopher Paolini or The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #5) by Rick Riordan for my Magic book. I've just moved out (for the first time!) so it depends which book I can dig out of the boxes first :)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 245 comments Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse #1) by Charlaine Harris
Shelf: Paranormal Mystery
Finished: March 18th, 2012
Rating: ★★★
Thoughts: I was leaning towards two stars for a while, because by the middle, there were some aspects I really wasn't enjoying, but then I realized that it was probably intentional via the setting (deep south Louisiana) and Sookie's narration and I was able to get into it. Bill and Sookie's relationship didn't do much for me; however, the murder mystery part sucked me in. I enjoyed that vampires actually acted like vampires -- they dislike garlic, they can't go out in sunlight, etc. I think I'll continue this series, because it wound up being fun brain candy. (And someday, I WILL check out True Blood...)

Thoughts:
The author did her research while writing this book and it showed when she described spells and rituals. I just wished there were a little less details about the city. Overall, I liked the story and finished the book in almost no time!

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) (happyindulgence) | 1151 comments Thank you, the move was very tiring on the weekend and now we just need to sort out some furniture :) It's such a life-changing experience!

Ok, I promised my best friend I would finish this series because she loved it so much. I don't see it. I didn't outright hate it like I expected but I'm glad I held up my end of the bargain. SO glad I didn't see the movie. But I'll probably watch part 1 and 2 when they're both out on DVD.

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 245 comments The Alloy of Law (Mistborn, #4) by Brandon Sanderson
Shelf: Magic
Finished: March 22nd, 2012
Rating: ★★★★
Thoughts: This was just great. A fun, fast-paced read by author Brandon Sanderson, this takes place 300 years after the original Mistborn trilogy -- however, you don't need any knowledge of the first three books to get into this, as it works well as a stand-alone. The Mistborn universe uses a really interesting magic system wherein characters have the ability to activate powers via metals -- they swallow a vial with metal flakes and "burn" it to tap into their abilities. Some people can Push and Pull on metals in ways that almost let them fly, some use them to get super-strength; in this installment, characters can even use alloys to speed or slow down time within a certain radius. Cool, huh?

Whereas the original Mistborn trilogy was set in a medieval Europe-esque world, this is set on the brink of an industrial revolution; trains are being used as freight and transportation, and electricity is slowly being installed. Protagonist Waxillium Ladrian is an ex-lawmaker; he hunted down criminals in the Roughs, but after a job goes terribly wrong, he retreated to the relative wealth of the City and House Ladrian. As much as he tried forging a new life, he eventually becomes intertwined with the force behind a series of train heists and kidnapped women. He then sets out to take out the mastermind, flanked by pun-cracking Wayne and the timid Marasi.

I really enjoyed this book -- if you're a fan of steampunk-ish settings (though this comes a bit later than steampunk due to the presence of electricity) or want to read about old-style gangsters (this gave me a Chicago feel), this might be worth a read. :D

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) (happyindulgence) | 1151 comments Great review Valerie, sounds like a fascinating read!

Midu Hadi | 1732 comments Caressed By Ice (Psy-Changeling, #3) by Nalini Singh
Shelf: pnr-uf
Finished: 25-03-12
Rating: ★★★
Thoughts:
Typical Psy novel. Liked it much better than the ones before. Just thought the killer/packmate should have been someone we knew or who played an important role. Can't wait to read about Hawke!

message 345: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Midu, you'll just have to read to #10 Kiss of Snow (Psy-Changeling, #10) by Nalini Singh to read all about Hawke. And no skipping ahead.

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) (happyindulgence) | 1151 comments For PNR-UF I've got a choice between:

Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward or Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison or City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2) by Cassandra Clare
