    Bookmarks...What do you use?

I seem to always lose a proper bookmark, so I use what's handy. Mostly hair ribbons and post-its. The tiny post-its are great.

I too use anything that's to hand. I have a small collection of proper bookmarks, but after I lost a really special one (it was crocheted .. lol) on a plane, I decided not to use my proper ones any more. On the subject of bookmarks, I get really annoyed when reading library books to find that previous readers have not bothered to use one. Instead they've bent the corners of pages back to mark their place. Grrr.
I mostly use receipts. I've also used bandaids - still in the packet. They're good. nice and flat. A good bookmark size for me.

I use all sorts of bookmarks...I have one regular bookmark (Garfield) and like 6 or 7 maybe more that I have made. I like them all so much I want to use them all at once but I can't, so I came up with a idea, I rotate between then all with every book that I read so I get to use them all.

I used to maul my books leaving them open on the table folding the corner of pages down I have however curbed my ways I have a small collection of bookmarks I Giuseppe from proper ones to cool postcards and other things they sit in a box and I pick which one I want to use based on the book I'm reading

Er... am I the only one who doesn't use bookmarks? Idk, I find it easier to just flip to the page I'm on.

@Annette - I hate dogearing books too :/
I dog ear my own or leave them face down open to my place on my own books, on borrowed books I usually use grocery receipt I do respect others books. But I mostly use my kindle now so not so much an issue.

I always use proper bookmarks! I am extremely pedantic about my books, and hate the folded corners, and books left open upside down!!! If anyone damages my books, look out for them...lol

I have a small collection of about 12 complimentary bookmarks from stores. I must have a face that says GIVE ME FREE BOOKMARKS...lol. Treat them well, like my books. I'm a little ocd with my possessions. I rotate them, choosing a different one for each book I read.

Haha!!

  Haha!!
Book receipts, couple of proper bookmarks, folded up bit of paper torn from a notebook ... whatever is lying around at the time. I tend to sometimes get sidetracked while reading one book and end up on another ('specially with non-fiction!), so I usually have half a dozen bookmarks or more, in use, at any one time.

Ive always used bookmarks. When I was eight, a friend of dads went to Turkey, and brought back a lovely hand woven bookmark with blue and red floral patterns. I used the same bookmark up until I was 14, because I lost it :( For Christmas I got a similar style book mark (just different patterns), so that's what I use now.
Currently using a bookmark that I bought at the Tower of London. It has a picture of Henry VIII and lists his wives. I love a nice bookmark but will use whatever is at hand.

The State Library of NSW has beautiful free bookmarks with pictures from the collection - they had a lovely Mary Poppins illustration on one of my favourites! My husband and I were given a "page buddy" this year for Christmas, which have the great advantage of being pretty much unlosable because they attach by magnets to the back of the book - I think they are a great idea, as I've often dropped bookmarks on the train - usually when I have been rushing to get out (lost in my book!) http://www.pagebuddy.com/

Cathy, thanks so much for that link! They are brilliant! I will have a look for some next time I'm out:)

Cathy, nice on those pagebuddies..I thought it was going to be something different. I'll have to try and find what I'm talking about but this on the otherhand is useless and rips pages..lol

i've tried to use bookmarks several times but i have several books im normally in the middle of and i move from one place to another from when i start reading to end...so i lose bookmarks easily too :P Dog-ear my books i know its not the best but meh ;)

I use book marks all time time, I lose them but there is always another one around somewhere. My favourite type is a magnetic one - they seem to last longer. At the moment I am using one that I made that sits in the corner, it's working ok. My local library always has a book mark so I use them a lot too.

I love my bookmark collection and pick up new ones when I can. But then I'm too scared of using the nice ones in case they get ruined, so I tend to use either a cheapy cardboard one or a homemade one, keeping my nice ones safe in their box.My present 'bookmark of choice' is a homemade laminiated one with a picture of Castiel from Supernatural! ;)
#12 I borrowed a hardback library book recently and was thrilled to find it also had an attached ribbon bookmark! I'm going to check out those page buddies....nice idea.I too have a great collection of bookmarks but when I'm reading (in bed especially) I'll lose track of them and then grab whatever's close at hand to mark the place. I would never, ever dog ear a book and it does distress me to see it on library books :((

Yes I would.
I collect book marks also! They take up such little space and don't need dusting... I use several over and over though for the books I have on the go. I absolutely cannot turn down the corners of pages.

Such a lot of book mark collectors....so good to hear most people don't like to turn page corners down...books are so precious:)

I lent a book out to a colleague of my hubby's many years ago...it came back wrecked!!! I had to ask for it several times before I finally got it back as well! So now, I just don't lend them unless it's to someone as pedantic as I am;D

That's usually a good indication...hopefully it'll be good when it comes back:)

I leave books open face down...uho!! XD But in general it's not for ages, usually when called away from reading will I do that. However, if it's a book I've been loaned I'll never do that..Not nice!!I'm currently using two different bookmarks..One is a sticker and the other a docket from a reccent trip to Target.

Train tickets or bits of paper I rip (it's especially satisfying tearing up paid bills for this purpose).I had to clean my flat today and found about 50 of these scraps. One must have gone exploring in my spare room (where I never read) and met it's demise behind my amp, and it looked like 3 or 4 of some others organized a search party but got lost on the way.

This thread has made me want to make some bookmarks that look like bandaids. Think it could become a fad? Kidding! I've never used a bandaid as a bookmark but seems a potentially handy idea - paper cuts... *bad joke*

Exactly never know when that unsuspecting paper cut might happen unless you're an e-reader then we can just pretend ;D
I either use the ones that I puck up free from my local library (currently sporting a Disneys Mickey's Musical Festival one at the moment).I laughed when I read Brittney's comment of using a Bunning paint card...I've got a few of those (though not Zesty Lemon which sounds lovely).
I can't dog-ear pages...no, I just can't...if I can't find a bookmark handy I usually have post-it notes hanging around for desperate times.
I also tend to make batches of laminated bookmarks at work because I do lose them from time to time. One of my favorites is a long gumleaf with Sungglepot and Cuddlepie leaning over the top, and when you turn it over you see their bare bums (lol), and I have another with photos of my nephews (loving the new SmartArt insert options with Word-2010...a couple of clicks and I have a professional looking bookmark with my gorgeous nephews on it).
Brenda wrote: "I always use proper bookmarks! I am extremely pedantic about my books, and hate the folded corners, and books left open upside down!!! When I read paper books, I use bookmarks I picked up in Bhutan with Buddhist patterns woven on them. They were the only souvenirs I managed to bring back.

They sound really nice Murray....I have been lucky enough to pick up some by authors lately, so I've got lots to use at the moment:)

Book depository bookmarks - they send one with each new purchase. Otherwise, my Kindle does it for me.

I used to have a beautiful leather bookmark when I was younger, but I lost it (probably stuck in a book somewhere... hopefully I'll track it down as I restack my bookshelves after recently moving). Now I use a batch of free bookmarks I picked up from various bookstores... or the old fall-backs of bookstore dockets (helps me to remember when I purchased the book).

For me I started out with bookmarks (even a few I made myself) but in the end I never used them and when I was reading a book I'd lose them.
So, now it's anything I can get- grocery dockets, stickers, unused banaid(lol, still in little packet), paper clip, rubber bands, free bookmark from BD and so on.
