Cindy Bidwell (rindycb) | 16 comments I love the magnetic ones, and you can get them in packs of five or so... I often have more than one book on the go. But I've been known to use anything that could be used... Even broken rulers, as long as its flat.

message 52: by [deleted user] (new)

I usually just use paper. I did buy a cute little clip thing with a bee on it once, but now I'm not sure where it is...

message 53: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (nikkijazzie) I always use random pieces of paper or anything really that comes to hand, so my books are normally filled with bills, prescription scripts, stickers, old boarding passes, pay slips, random quotes on paper and of course the 100 strong list of books that are on my "to buy" list. It makes them look a little scruffy but it works :)

message 54: by Janine (new)

Janine (janineor) | 2172 comments I use bookmarks that I have picked up on my travels and cycle through them so lots of great memories while reading.

message 55: by Kim Marie (new)

Kim Marie | 894 comments LOL Nikki.....the next time a patient comes to the desk and tells me they've lost their prescription scripts I'll tell them to check whatever books they're currently reading :)

Hahaha!!!

message 57: by Sherri (new)

Sherri (fabledhattress) | 456 comments I think like most people ai just use whatever is on hand. If theres nothing then I just remember what page I left off on. I hate it when someone dogears a page, its quite rude to the book

message 58: by Tui (new)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments When I was a child at primary school about a hundred years ago (it feels) I was the child librarian in the school library. I remember running a school contest for who could make the best bookmark. I was about 11 I think and the idea was to encourage bookmark use in order to discourage corner folding and other damaging methods of marking the page.

These days, I like a nice firm bookmark with a clean straight edge, like a business card. Then I can run it down the page as I read. But on the kindle I mark electronically of course.

My man bought me a very flash bookmark with 3D dolphins that appear to leap as you move it in the light. It has a tassel hanging from it and is so beautiful I keep it hanging from the door-handle of my office as a decoration.

the 3D dolphin one sound nice Tui :)

message 60: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments I usually use book marks….free ones or what my daughter has made. But at the moment I’m using my Library docket

message 61: by Tui (new)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments Bookmarks made by children using wax crayons are notorious for literally "marking" the pages. :-(
Get them to use colour pencils or felt-tip pens.

message 62: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments Haha that’s very true….but I got it covered. We laminate them :)

We had a craft day at the library yesterday with my grandkids (and others) where they made bookmarks...cardboard cut to size, magnets to stick at the bottom, and lots of crayons to colour them in with!! Didn't think of that marking the pages Tui!

message 64: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments Brenda, could you put a clear contact over them?

message 65: by Tui (last edited Apr 18, 2012 09:03PM) (new)

Tui Allen (tuibird) | 143 comments Brenda laminating might help and you can kinda do a lo-tech home lamination job just by wrapping the card in plastic and taping it closed at the back. Makes it look nicer too. These are old schoolteacher's tricks. :-)

Nikki (nikkijazzie) Kim Marie wrote: "LOL Nikki.....the next time a patient comes to the desk and tells me they've lost their prescription scripts I'll tell them to check whatever books they're currently reading :)"

Haha that usually the first place I look if I've lost my script, but sometimes it backfires because I might start a book but switch to another book and leave it in the first and forget about it, go back and see the doctor for a new one, then find the old one 3 months later :)

Thanks to you both for the suggestions....probably clear contact would be good...as long as I can remember how to NOT get bubbles from the days when I used to do my kids books;D

Hey Katie, here's somewhere for you to show off your bookmark....and check out all the others here. I'd forgotten about this thread...

message 69: by Katie (new)

Katie (ieishanalani) Thanks Brenda I got another new one yesterday, I've got my first day of tafe today so I'll upload pics tonight :)

message 70: by Anya (last edited Aug 05, 2012 04:48PM) (new)

Anya Allyn | 21 comments I just saw the cutest bookmarks at the Scholastic book fair at my children's school. They were knitted (knitted in a long, flat rectangular shape - the same as a regular bookmark, and with stuck-on eyes. The 'face' was meant to stick out the top of the book).

I don't knit, but I'm going to buy some knitting needles and wool to make some bookmarks with the kids :)

message 71: by May (new)

May | 6 comments I collect bookmarks. So whenever I need one, I stick my hand in the pouch. Sort of like a lucky dip :D

They sound gorgeous Anya:)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 60 comments I collect souvenir bookmarks on my travels... got them from places like The Tower of London, the Vatican, the Louvre, Ireland and Port Arthur, Tasmania. I switch them around from book to book so I can remember all those wonderful places.

message 74: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6886 comments I have two special ones. They are little silver owls that go over the page. One is silver and purple. the other silver with pink beads. Knit? What's that? Unknown territory for this person.

message 75: by Katie (new)

Katie (ieishanalani) I bought my mum a gold mermaid bookmark with crystal beads the other day, its very pretty i think i might buy it for myself aswell :) haha

message 76: by Tahlia (new)

Tahlia Newland (tahlian) | 90 comments I like proper book marks, but I'll use a tissue if there's nothing else. Somehow my book marks go missing! It's never a problem on my Kindle though, it just opens up to where I left it.

I'm about to get some bookmarks for my book release, you know the ones with all the book details on them. I'm hoping they'll be pretty enough for people to actually use them.

message 77: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80002 comments Mod
Tahlia, if you head on over here http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_... and have a read through the different threads there, you'll get the idea...my suggestion to you is to make your own thread to advertise your books..you can add the links to them, and so on. It's where all our authors can add all the information about their own books, new releases etc.

The Book Depository sends a free bookmark with every book so I have a pile of them. Still sometimes use train tickets, clean folded tissues, used envelopes and receipts. Don't think I have ever used a Bandaid though!

What are they Lauredhel?

message 83: by Lauredhel (new)

Lauredhel | 11 comments Brenda: bookdarts.com :) Sadly they can be hard to find in Australia, but they're small and light so easy to order from overseas.

message 84: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6886 comments I'm another who has never hear of book darts

Well here it is http://www.bookdarts.com/ How fascinating! I think I'll have to have a further browse through the site! Thanks Lauredhel:)

message 86: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimbreads) I mainly use the free bookmarks I accumulate from book depository and 'real' bookshops. I'll use the same one until it looks ratty, then toss it and pull another one from my pile :)

message 87: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6886 comments Interesting concept. Thanks for letting us know about those book darts.

message 88: by Kassassinn (new)

Kassassinn I absolutely love my magnetic bookmark! it's getting a bit mangled from overuse but I've never lost my page because of it falling out.
P.S. I also have a collection of movie/TV bookmarks, with my favourite being a Harry Potter bookmark I got about 6 years ago.

message 89: by Katie (new)

Katie (ieishanalani) Magnetic ones are great Mockingjay, I bought a pack of hello kitty ones off of ebay :)

message 90: by MarciaB (new)

MarciaB - Book Muster Down Under | 225 comments Anything I can get my hands on at the time - I'm always losing them.

message 91: by Annette (new)

Annette (rivolipalace) | 5 comments The bookmarks I use are any of the following, in order of preference:

*bookmark - usually a freebie from a bookstore or library
* postcard - can be a lovely surprise when opening a long unread novel
* airline pass (though not so common these days with internet check ins)
* receipt
* post it note (least fave but will do in a pinch).

I have never used, as has been posted on this thread, an unused bandaid - mainly cause I can never find one when I need one!

message 92: by Peter (new)

Ha..yes they would be Peter! Very original:)

message 94: by Neil (new)

Neil Haines | 69 comments I use bookmarks that are usually picked up at Dymocks counters advertising new books etc. otherwise it's the airline boarding pass, as books and holidays go hand in hand.
