message 501: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I don't actually spend much time in my library. Just enough to pick up the books I've ordered.
I am lazy enough that I put books on order even when they are on the shelf at the library I'm going to so I don't have to do looking for them. :)

It's a good thing the librarians like me!

I've done that before too. I usually try to only do that when the book is not at my library but I also feel a bit lazy at times.

Neither do I, I normally I order the books I want and Mrs. Happy brings them home to me :)

Now, if could only get her to pay my fines and ILL fees :)

The branch that I go to (rarely) is less than a mile away, I guess that makes me really, really lazy :)

Dawn (caveatlector) I love that one in Kansas, I'd love to visit the one in Thailand. It's beautiful.

Kirsten (ringwraith10) | 9 comments Hehe, I'm a librarian (sort of) so my answers to this thread would be biased. I'm in charge of Interlibrary Loans at a State University library, so with our great state funding (better than private schools, not as good as BIG state schools) we have a lot of books. Even so, however, we borrow about twice as many books from other libraries than we lend. I see this as positive because that means that our patrons really use the library! Some higher-ups see it as negative because they think that means we don't have enough books. They just don't realize that we're not a research library, so we don't have a reason to own everything on the face of the earth. As it is, our library is the size of three football fields. That's really big where I come from.

I also have a library card for the local public library, but I usually only go there for events and rarely check out books there. Any book I ever need I can get from my library -- I use Interlibrary Loans religiously (of course).

Shomeret | 55 comments I believe in the religion of interlibraryloanism too, or would that be ILLism? Although the collections of the public library systems in my area are wonderful, they can't have everything. My ILLs are usually the more obscure books, books from small publishers or non-fiction.

Haha, I think ILLism would be the abbreviated version, so you could go with either. :D

And no library owns all the books -- not even the Library of Congress, surprisingly enough. So sometimes you just have to ILL! :)

On a strange note -- I read a few articles a while back that said Harvard's library has several books bound in human skin. I'm tempted to see if they would send those books to me if I requested them... Of course, I was grossed out handling a book someone borrowed that was about dissecting human brains (I imagined that he had held the book in one hand and the scalpel in the other), so I might not have the stomach for those Harvard books...

Lariela | 187 comments My local library has the regular fiction, fantasy and science fiction all in the same category.

message 514: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 3 comments My library also has the genres all on the shelves together. Honestly, when browsing, I just scan the spines until I see the "Historical Fiction" sticker.

message 515: by happy (last edited May 18, 2015 09:12PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Also, my library does seperate hardback from the paperback (most of the paper back is fiction) and oversize books from regular sized

I don't remember them putting any kind of sticker to the spine as to genre

Tim Hodkinson (timhodkinson) | 577 comments Our local library, which was basically a caravan in Moira, county Armagh, northern ireland, has recently been destroyed and is currently being replaced by a permanent building. Its not finished yet but already i feel an exciting whiff of progress in the air!

As you would Tim. Local libraries are like my idea of close to heaven.

Monica | 23 comments I love my local library. I use them all the time. The libraries here are funded by county taxes. If your local branch doesn't have a book, they will ship it in from another branch for free, if you request it. They will email you when the book(s) is in. They do have late fees, but you can renew a book up to 3 times. They also offer e-books and online research databases that help me with school. I'm very pleased.
