Thank you for the excerpt. I will put this on my to be read next list. I don't have HBO can't watch the series
I'm right in the middle of Game of thrones. For once I must say I really want to watch the series befor I continue because I keep getting everone and everywhere mixed up. I have three bookmarks in the book. One where i'm reading, one for the map, and one for the list of characters.
You might get confused if you watch the series in the middle of the book. I had to refer to the cast of characters all the time when I first started. After five books, you pretty much know who the big players are. Keep going, it is worth your while.

He says that the characters are incredibly well written and just get more complex and intriguing as you go along. He highly recommended them to me.

But after a while, like Jayme said, you totally get used to who everyone is and the story will reward you for sticking it out.
I am about 2/3 done with the first book and don't see the role Daneyrs plays. I am not watching the show but can anyone explain?
Her role doesn't become important until she married Khal Drago. I think you would have met him by now.
She's sort of like Bonnie Prince Charlie - the exiled monarch across the water, whose claim is probably better than that of the King currently on the throne, but she lacks an army to enforce it. Bonnie Prince Charlie got an army, but lost the war to get his throne back. Daenaerys is a bit more gifted than BPC, however - if she gets her army, she could pose a serious threat to those on the Iron Throne. That's the role she'll play in the series.

I am hoping I can get this to work. I was able to download an audible of book 2 thinking I had watched the first season and knew the gist of book 1 already, but find I want more of book one now before listening to the rest.

That maybe if I could put faces to names and visually SEE the different places they would stick better. I mean I know if/when I continue the series it'll all pan out no problem it's just getting there thats a little tricky
I read the first book and found it amazing, engrossing, and exhausting. So much so that I'm not sure I can commit to the whole series, although I wonder about that Tyrion the Imp. I found it frustrating that I never knew who I should root for. I think that's also the real draw to the books - it makes you think about yourself and your own morals, I suppose, but yet I felt like emailing Martin and asking him to tell me who the heroes are!

Rarely in life are there people who are all good or all bad and even more rarely are there groups or "sides" which are all good or all bad. Tyrion may be a Lannister and the Lannisters may be the antagonists but Tyrion is undoubtedly a protagonist.
The characters are what make the series. They are complex and you come to understand even the antagonists and why they are who they are.
Another book which is similar in that regard - where you get to see both sides of the story and you see the flaws and qualities of each side is When Christ and His Saints Slept by Sharon Kay Penman. If you like your characters laid out black and white, good vs evil, this is not the book for you!
Tina wrote: "I felt like emailing Martin and asking him to tell me who the heroes are!"I think he would tell you that there are no heroes in war :P
the show is a piss poor comparison... ugh still on withdrawl from finishing a dance with dragons... qmazing series but the show is a thread bare cliffnotes version.

Oh, I don't know...I think the show does a really good job for being an all-visual medium. It's got to be impossible to make a completely faithful adaptation from books that good to any kind of watchable story.I'm a huuuuge fangirl of A Song of Ice and Fire, too, so I get you about being in withdrawals. :) I've read the entire series probably five or six times now.

I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in reading an extended excerpt of George R. R. Martin's book A GAME OF THRONES. It's the first book in his Fire and Ice series, and it's super addictive. This particular excerpt also coincides with the first episode of the HBO series. Depending on the response, I'll be posting a giveaway for this book soon (and posting a link here as soon as it's live)--so I hope you all like it!
