Wow!! I have the Simple Nook Touch - how did you get those other readers on it, I would love to do that.

message 54: by Harper (new)

Harper O'Connor (chollacactus) I chose Nook for several reasons. The most important being the greater number of file types I could put on it for reading. The other was the big hoo-hah in 2009 about Amazon remotely deleting copies of "1984" (how ironic) from people who had purchased it on their Kindle. They supposedly had loaded it from a company that didn't have the rights to those copies. You know what? Not my problem. If I purchased a book from a bookstore, I've bought it. You certainly aren't coming into my home and taking my copy back because as a store, you messed up. I will never allow someone that level of control over something I BOUGHT.

message 55: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I received a Nook as a present, so that is why I have a Nook. I do not have the backlight even :) I try to get most of my books from the library now that I am divorced - I used to buy ALL my books. I am sure either one is easy to use for a download of a book.

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree with Meghan--that was a consideration for me, too. I also like the small size on the Simple Touch and the Glow option. The long battery life was a plus, and I wanted e-ink, not yet another eye-straining screen.

message 57: by Grace (new)

Grace | 2 comments The reason I bought my Nook (Gen1) instead of a Kindle was because 1) my aunt has worked for Barnes and Noble for years and I was able to get a wicked deal at the time 2)Because I had always gone to Barnes & Noble for books, even before my aunt worked there, while I rarely used Amazon for anything 3) Because the touch screen appealed to me rather than a keypad 4) Because I have a special leaning toward the underdog and 5) Because I had a couple of friends who had Nooks and they all said that they were satisfied and I could lend with them.

And now that I've had one for a little over a year now, I'm happy with my desicion. I wouldn't trade it for a Kindle.

message 58: by Tyler (new)

Tyler (tyleralysea) | 17 comments I have a first gen nook and a nook simple touch. I originally went with nook because I loved the Barnes & Nobles stores and had had poor experiences with Amazon when I was in college. So the nook was the obvious choice for me. When it came time to get my second nook, so the husband could have the old one, I stayed with nook because it had all the features I needed and loved and I had a great experience with my first one.

I agree with you completely. Amazon will survive without selling books B&N will not.

message 60: by [deleted user] (new)

I bought a nook pretty much for the same reason everyone else here did. In store customer support. Sd card expansion. Can load epub and pdf files. Nook friends.

message 61: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (sahminil) | 4 comments I went with the nook because when I bought it kindle did not support library books. That was a big deciding factor. That and epub seems to be the standard format for the freebies that are around the net. I liked that!

I have the Nook Simple Touch (no glow light)-- the only thing I dislike about it is not having the light option. I'm so glad that they came out with the Simple Touch WITH glow light. As soon as I seen it I told hubby I want an upgrade to that! However, I won't be up grading because I can get around the fact I don't have a light by using my smartphone at night.

I'm with you two, the fact that I can stop at any B&N and a real live person will be able to help me was a big factor in deciding on the Nook.

I loaned my old Nook to a friend and she let her daughter use it -- she loved it so much, her father decided to get her an ereader for her 11th birthday. Tomorrow she'll be getting the Nook Glowlight. :-) A new generation of Nook lovers is born!

message 73: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) I had a Nook color for almost 2 years. Bought the extended warranty and absolutely loved it. It recently lost it's mind and I went to my local B&N and talked to the lovely people there. I was able to replace and upgrade it to the Nook Tablet for only $30. That day. No problems. Amazing!! It is so much faster.
The two main reasons to go with nook are better support and the SD card slot. The ability to read Epubs is a huge advantage. No worries over how to convert files or anything like that.

I think my friend went with the Nook for his daughter primarily because of the card slot. Though the fact that he has friends who can give tech support probably didn't hurt.

message 75: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 360 comments I agree Leslie, it is so easy to drop epub books in my Nook and then start reading them - I love Nook!!!

message 76: by Jean (new)

Jean French (jfrench55) | 82 comments I was faced with this decisions a couple of years back when I bought my first Nook. At the time as is now, they are very similar. The tipping point for me was that at the time, my library didn't offer ebooks for the Kindle. My father has a Kindle Paperwhite which is equivalent to the Simple Touch. I'm not as familiar with the Kindle Fire or the new Nook HD's but let's see if we can compare them. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe the Kindle Fire has an Android operating system more like a regular tablet and therefore, more apps. The Nook Tablet has a lot of apps but 80% are for kids. I don't think the Nook HD's have many apps yet either. If I was interested in more of a tablet than ereader, I'd go with the Kindle, but if I just wanted an ereader, I'd go with the Nook Simple Touch line. Both Kindle Paperwhite and Nook ST have the touch screen and touch/swipe page turning ability but the Nook has buttons also. I like that because I can hold the book with either hand and change the page easier.

The best thing about the Nook line is that it reads epubs which seem to becoming the standard. Even Apple iBook uses that format whereas Kindle uses it's own format and you have to purchase from Amazon. The best thing about the Kindle line is the way it handles personal documents and borrowed library items. All of your personal items are stored in the Amazon cloud and is easily accessed by any device. You don't have to physically connect to a computer and sideload items like you do with the Nook.

message 77: by Beth (new)

Beth (ixyavi) | 8 comments I also love so much that it can read epubs! I download almost every book and sideload them onto my Nook. So far I've only actually had to purchase one book, and if I looked hard enough I'm sure I could have found that one too. I was just so eager to start reading it that I didn't feel like wasting time perusing free epub sites.

Jean -- just FYI, you can buy Kindle formats from some e-tailers. It's just not as common.

message 79: by Jean (new)

Jean French (jfrench55) | 82 comments Another feature to the Nook is the SD card. I'm not sure if the new Kindles have that option.

message 80: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 167 comments The Kindle does not have SD card storage. However, the Kindle has the Cloud storage technology.

message 81: by Jean (new)

Jean French (jfrench55) | 82 comments Yeah. That cloud storage is a nice feature. Either way, it's really nice to have an ereader. I'd be lost without mine.

message 82: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (emtmelissa) Settled on the Nook because of its ability to use an SD card and also because of the book selection and in store support. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

message 83: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (emtmelissa) Nook also has cloud storage which has turned out to be a nice feature for me as well.

If you are using wifi, they should only show up under archived, just like Kindle. I do like that I can remove a book from my Kindle without using wifi or my computer. But I don't like that in my Kindle manager I can not tell whether or not a book is loaded on my device.

Good customer support is another strength of B&N. Hope that stays true if the buyout of B&N separate from Nook goes through.

message 91: by D (new)

D (d-lee) I just want to thank the members of the B&N discussion group. I too wondered if a Kindle would be better than a Nook (which I currently own and love). However, once I learned from your comments that I could download any epub from Kobo and Smashwords, there is no way I will ever change to Kindle.

I have also had occasion to use B&N tech support. When my Nook updated, I couldn't access any files. The tech talked me through it over the phone and it was fixed in 5 minutes. Doubt I would have gotten that kind of help from Amazon.

It can be done, if the book you are sideloading doesn't have digital rights manager (drm) on it and you are using a ebook manager to convert the file. I use Calibre. There are other retailers on the net that sell books that are not drm protected and once you download them to your computer, you can use Calibre to convert the file from a mobi to an epub. I've done it a few times and it works!

message 96: by Chris (new)

Chris The Story Reading Ape (chrisgr) You can now get an Overdrive app from the B&N / Nook UK Shop, this lets you download EPUB format books directly to your Nook.

I use it to get books on loan from my local UK Library, but I've not tried it for books from elsewhere yet.

Thanks! I do have Calibre and have used it a few times to convert. I think I just need to buy an iPad so I can have both the B&N app and Kindle app so I can read whatever I want without being limited by my store of choice.

Karen (2noelle) I have an ipad and have both Kindle and Nook apps. However, I prefer to read on my Nook, it's smaller and I can visit the Nook shop from it.

If the product information includes the line "Simultaneous Usage: Unlimited" it should convert. I have had a couple that did not but most of the ones I have tried do. Mostly you will find this label on indie books but quite a few established authors are gong independent when their contracts are up.
