Sara ♥ (saranicole) I read The Accidental Duchess by Jessica Benson this weekend, and just finished A Wallflower Christmas by Lisa Kleypas, so that's 20 more pts. I'm at 140.

Next up will be Can You Trust a Tomato in January? by Vince Staten... heehee... It's about secrets of the supermarket. Should prove interesting, considering it was published in 1993... It looks amusing.

As soon as I get through A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L'Engle on audiobook (not for points), I'll start on 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke, who died last year.

Pompeii is very good.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Yes, I also enjoyed Pompeii.

message 1405: by El (new)

El Cynthia, I'm having trouble coming up with a book for my profession. I'm a medical secretary, but would assume a book about a secretary would be sufficient. I was looking at The Body of Jonah Boyd as I believe the character Judith Denham is a secretary. I'm open to other suggestions however. Can you pull something out of that bag of tricks for me like you did for the engineer? :)

Andrew (aceandrew) I'm back after a few days away, which included a good chunk of reading.

So, I'd like to claim for:

6. Read A Historical Fiction Book Featuring A Famous Historic Personality Or A Biography Of A Historical Figure. Burke & Hare Crime Archive 15 points

8. Read A Book Whose Title Contains The Word King, Queen ... Queen Camilla 10 points

message 1410: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (aceandrew) Question: Just picked up a nice book where the lead character is Chinese. (Not the author and it's set in the UK.) Any chance I can use it for this ?

1. For Chinese New Year: Read a Book That Takes Place in China or Was Written By a Chinese Author.

(I'm assuming probably not, although I can use it for other categories instead.)

message 1411: by Sarenna (new)

Sarenna (djsthree) | 63 comments Eva - I enjoyed the book, but I wouldn't put it as one of my favorites. It was good enough to keep me interested to the end. It only took me 2 days to read (I work full time, so my hours for reading are somewhat limited). It's a quick read, I found it entertaining, which is more than I can say of a lot of the other books I've picked up (and put down) recently. UGH!

message 1412: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Andrew - you're right it doesn't fit the category.

message 1413: by Julie (new)

Julie (scrapsofhistory) I just finished Venti Jesus. Great read for witnessing without being pushy.

3. For Christmas: Read a Book with Any of the Following in the Title: Angel, Miracle, God, Jesus, Shepherd, Manger, Wise Man, Mary, or Joseph.
Heaven's Harlots- Miriam Williams

I was planning on using 'heaven' and you okayed that but now I was wondering about 'bless'. :)

Total= 100 points. I'm currently reading Chocolate Beach by Julie Carobini

message 1419: by Jon (new)

Jon hmmm.. im not the boss, but i suspect 'bless' might be stretching it a bit for that one

message 1420: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) Yeah, that's what I think too but I figured I may as well try it right?
Someone did rain for a winter weather word which is what brought asking to mind but this might be more of a stretch. :)
I still have the other book (and who knows how many others I could use if I looked) so it's not that big of a deal.
I could be doing so much more but I'm reading about 1-2 books that can't be used in the challenge for every 1 book that can. That's actually why I'm trying to fit in what I can! :D

message 1421: by Eva-Marie (last edited Jan 21, 2009 10:33PM) (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) I don't know, bless goes with angel, miracle, God and Jesus pretty well. ??? :D

message 1424: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 271 comments Thanks Cynthia!

Okay, so one more book question. I'm almost done with The Duchess by Amanda Foreman. Although the movie version is very much focused on Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire's marital/love life, the book's focus is really on her political life. She was an avid Whig supporter and a huge behind-the-scenes player; probably the most influential women in British politics in her time. I have learned way more about British politics of that period than I had wanted to. Therefore, I'm wondering if I can use it for 10: In Honor Of Inauguration Day: Read A Book About Politics/Politicians (Fiction Or Non-Fiction). The book would fit into other slots, but I've got other books that I want to use in those slots. It's at least worth a shot to ask!

Jon Angie - im sure if Cynthia allowed 'blood' for someone else, although tenous - same would apply for all.

Alyssa - I would imagine, we were talking first time published in the form of a book so that ought to be ok.

message 1439: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments *If I make a decision/exception about/to a challenge task for one person it does apply for everyone.

*First published novel is what I'm looking for for the new author challenge so yes the person can have written for magazine's or journals or newspapers and still count.

*I try to limit exceptions or changes to tasks to things that won't change the real substance/purpose of the task itself. That's my only real guideline when I'm making decisions about requests.

I don't think it was very well written. It was an interesting story, but I didn't like the way it was written. It didn't pull me into the story of her life. It was worth reading if you're interested in the life of a geisha, but if you just want a good read, then it's a different story.
