message 768: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Rosemary - I put together the leader board but yes you need to keep track of your own points.

It would be helpful if everyone clearly posted the total points they've earned at the end of their new posts (when their totals have changed that is). Most people do this already but for those of you who haven't participated before and aren't doing that it just makes it easier to update the board.

For the historical personailty is A girl with a pearl earring okay? Saw it on someones challenge but before taking it for that want to be sure it matches.

message 780: by Potjy (new)

Potjy | 127 comments When I read the challenge for the first time, I thought, "No way! I can't finish all those in... like 2 years!" But then I realized I didn't have to complete ALL tasks. So I jumped in. :)

All books read from December 1st count, right? This is my completed tasks so far:

5 POINT TASKS

9. Read A Mystery Novel. Hide by Lisa Gardner

10 POINT TASKS

1. For Chinese New Year: Read a Book That Takes Place in China or Was Written By a Chinese Author. Flying Fox of the Snowy Mountain/ Xue Shan Fei Hu a martial arts novel by Jin Yong (the pen name of Louis Cha)

*There is an English translation of this book called Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain, but I don't recommend it. Most people say the translation was quite bad. I read it in the much better (methinks!) Thai translation.

total points: 15

And some questions please, Cynthia

Is a play counts for 5-point task no. 10: The Oscars Are In February: Read a Book you’ve Already Seen the Film To.? (it counts for the other Oscar task)

And for 15-point task no. 10: In Honor Of Inauguration Day: Read A Book About Politics/Politicians (Fiction Or Non-Fiction). Does the book must deal directly with politics? I'm reading Mister Pip. It's about life of ordinary people in the time of civil war, which I consider a form of political conflict.

And for the last 25-point task: Read a book of at least 700 pages. What if my edition has 700+, but most edition has only 600+? Will it count?

And here is some book suggestions:

For someone I find along the thread that need a book with main characters working in assurance (too late now?): try this one Double Indemnity by James M. Cain. Can be used as a mystery for everyone too.

For books about China: try The Banquet Bug: A Novel (I think it's called The Uninvited in the UK) by Geling Yan, and the mystery novels by Qiu Xiaolong. I have nothing against Amy Tan, just feel dizzy seeing her name keeps turning up.

message 781: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (mamamunky) THANK THE LORD JESUS I AM DONE WITH WUTHERING HEIGHTS. Can I just say that I still don't understand the love affair people have with this book. But I'm sure some people would think it's odd that I have a tattoo of the word Pip cuz I love Great Expectations so much.

Ok, now that I got that out of my system.

25 pt task #2 - Read a book you started and never finished:
Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte.

New total: 115 pts

4 Tasks complete (Goal: 25)

message 785: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments - Beth your total in the last post was off by 10 so I adjusted in for the board.

- Darla - thank you for letting me know. I hadn't seen that yet but it's adjusted now.

- Jeane - Donna Leon's book are fine for the mystery category, and Girl with a Pearl earring would work fine for the Historical Fiction task.

- Potjy - yes you may read a play of a film you've already seen, the inauguration task should be more politically based or include at least one politician in it to count for that task so that one doesn't really fit, and for the 25 point task as long as your edition is over at least 700 pages it counts

- Fiona - yes I try to read through everyone's posts

Welcome to the people to the people just joining in - this is really great it just keeps getting bigger and bigger every time we do this - we already have more posts here than we had during the entirety of the fall challenge and we're only at the end of month 1.

Keep up the good reading and have fun!!!!!

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Cynthia, I have a couple of questions concerning the tasks.

Arctic Hero - Catherine Johnson could be read for either of these 2 tasks. I was wondering if it could be for 1. February Is African American History Month: Read A Book With A Main Character Who Is African American Or A Biography/Autobiography Of An African American. or 4. It’s Winter: Read A Book Whose Title Contains a Winter Weather Word – i.e. Blizzard, Snow, Ice, Sleet, Icicle, Snowflake, Frost, Freeze, Slush, Flurry, Chill, Or Hail.

Also can I read Star Sullivan - Maeve Binchy for 3. For Christmas: Read a Book with Any of the Following in the Title: Angel, Miracle, God, Jesus, Shepherd, Manger, Wise Man, Mary, or Joseph.

Thanks once again xx

Potjy | 127 comments I know this's very crazy and unlikely, but can Hogfather by Terry Pratchett be counted for 2. For Christmas: Read a Book with the word Santa, Elf, or the Name of Any of the Reindeer in the Title? Hogfather is the Discworld's equivalent of Santa Clause. :P

Judith 5 point task
7. Read A Book Whose Title Starts With The Word Who, What, Where, When, Why Or How. - When Santa Fell To The Earth - Cornelia Funke

15 point task
2. For Christmas: Read a Book with the word Santa, Elf, or the Name of Any of the Reindeer in the Title. - The Great Santa Search - Jeff Guinn

Total - 20 points

Angela | 1934 comments No, Potjy... you can only count each book for one task...

message 792: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melissaconrad) I'm in! At first I was worried I'd be overwhelmed, but then I realized that
a) I don't HAVE to force all of the categories, but can just use these as a guide for books to choose next
b) the book I'm seconds away from starting will earn me five points! (Snow by Orhan Pamuk)

Looking forward to checking back in when I start earning points! :)

I think Potjy meant to ask if it would count toward #2 (under 15 pt task), not two tasks.

Angela | 1934 comments Whoops sorry Potjy!! Guess I did not read that carefully enough :)

I just saw this for the first time and felt overwhelmed just reading the tasks! But then I realized with as many books as I read I shouldn't feel that way and like you said, I don't have to force any of them. I'm definitely going to start- I finished my A-Z author and title challenge for 2008 way back in the summer and was hoping to find something new!

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Fiona - you can pick which task you want to use the Arctic Hero book for - and the other book Star Sullivan won't count for that task.

Potjy - sorry that won't count for that task.

And yes everyone the challenge is meant to be fun; to help clear books off that giant mount tbr I know everyone has; and maybe discover a new book or author along the way.

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Cynthia, was wondering about your answers for this.
Two questions

Mystery and Donna Leon her books, is that okay?

For the historical personailty is A girl with a pearl earring okay? Saw it on someones challenge but before taking it for that want to be sure it matches

message 799: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I have Girl with a Pearl earring on mine for the historical figure one. It's about Johannes Vermeer the artist, so I think it would count. :)
