Beth F | 342 comments Does anyone have any recommendations for the “read a book about a character who has the same profession as you?” I investigate suspicions of money-laundering, securities fraud, etc.

If not, could I use a non-fiction book? I can come up with a whole laundry list of titles about chasing dirty money that are non-fiction, but am coming up empty from a fiction angle.

message 629: by [deleted user] (new)

I dunno.... right in the first chapter it says:

I had to get the news from the TV man. 'Today, July second, 1964,' he said, 'the president of the United States signed the Civil Rights Act into law in the East Room of the White House...'

Seemed like it fit the bill. I can move it to a different task if need be.

Beth,
If you are into spy/thriller novels, The Firm by John Grisham involved money laundering. It is not technically the guys profession (he's a lawyer), but he ends up investigating it. Would that count? It seems I read another one by Michael Connelly where his main character was working with an FBI agent whose job was to investigate money fraud. I can't think of the name right off, but it was part of the Harry Bosch series (and probably pretty early on since I can't remember the name.)

Alyssa | 137 comments HAHAHA
i'm sorry Hayes, but i like how you added the space between How and L for that one :) I'm actually kind of curious about that now though...when we get challenges like that (Read a book whose title starts with...) do they have to be just the word or can they be part of a different word? Like howl

message 637: by Beth F (last edited Dec 19, 2008 08:22PM) (new)

Beth F | 342 comments 5 Point Tasks
1 – Written by an African-American: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston (12/10/08).

15 Point Tasks
4 – Read a book & it’s sequel: Club Dead Sookie Stackhouse Book 3 (12/17/08) and Dead to the World Sookie Stackhouse Book 4 (12/19/08) both by Charlaine Harris

Tasks Completed: 2/33
Points: 20/375

Next up: for 25 points, read a book you started but never finished: Jewel Oprah's Book Club by Brett Lott. I started this book in 2004, right before I made an out-of-state move so it got lost in the shuffle and apparently I forgot about it. I came across it the other day and realized several things 1) it still has the bookmark in it 2) the generic story line and the character names are familiar but I really don’t remember much about this book at all. I’ll probably have to re-read the first half of the book(or possibly skim, depending on how much of it comes back to me while I’m re-reading). I’ll start today.

message 646: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (klonk) If I'm a student and reads a book about someone who's a student as well (let's say Twilight - Stephenie Meyer), would that count for the 15 point task?

message 647: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments If you are a student in high school yes - otherwise no...for students you should read books about students at the same education level as you or studying the same thing you are.

message 648: by d4 (new)

10. Everything Is Illuminated: A Novel by Jonathan Safran Foer

Point total: 85

message 649: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Did you enjoy it Ofmatt?

message 650: by d4 (new)

d4 Oh, yes. Not quite as much as Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, but it was still very good on its own merit. I started stalling during the last ten or so pages because I didn't want it to end, knowing that I don't have another one of his books to read.
