I thought I'd recommend a place to start when looking for the best book to get into an author's works. The Onion AV Club has a column called Gateways to Geekery. The topics go beyond books, but I have seen lists on getting into steampunk, Lovecraft, and other things.
I used Gateways to pick a title to get into Wodehouse's Wooster and Jeeves stories. They recommended the sixth book, The Mating Season, as a good title to start with, and the column gave good reasons for it. Anyhow, it worked for me, and I'd recommend Gateways as a resource to others.
