Wonderkell | 12 comments Hi All,

I have a Kindle 3 that is about a year old. I have noticed in the last few months that it will spontaneously reboot itself 2 or 3 times a week. I'm also having trouble with it freezing quite a bit, and in that case I have to force a reboot.
The biggest problem is that when it happens the process is incredibly slow. It can sometimes take up to an hour!! I do have a lot of books, but an hour?!
Is anyone or has anyone experienced similar issues? Do any of you have a solution?

Tricia Douglas (teachgiftedkids) | 29 comments Sounds like something's wrong! I would call Amazon and see if you can send it back to them to be fixed. It definitely shouldn't be doing that!

Keith You might to check to make sure you have the latest software on your Kindle.

Shirley (shirleythekindlereader) Been dealing with the same issue for weeks. Seems to have been solved this week for some reason. I did remove a lot of books recently.

Nichole ~Bookaholic~ (nicholebookaholic) I had that problem with my K3 before....I called customer support and they replaced it.

Cindy (cat2010) Did you get your kindle fixed then? Candy

M. Myers (mruth) | 17 comments I, too, have a Kindle that's a little over a year old -- a 3G model. A few months ago it began failing to turn on when I slid the power switch. Rebooting would solve things, but sometimes the order of my books would be scrambled. Today, after spending some time on the phone w/ Amazon while we did diagnostics, they said it might be a problem with my cover. They're sending a new cover. Hope this helps some of you as well.

Hitandmiss | 12 comments I've heard of people having this problem, they were getting it because they have the Kindle Cover with the Light attached. If you have that type of Cover where it clips on to the left hand side of the kindle it can possibly damage part of the kindle electronics. Causes issues like this.

Some people get this problem others don't.

Karen M I've been having a small problem and discovered it was also caused by my cover but I don't have the one that hooks into the Kindle. My cover has a wide band with elastic on the ends to slip your hand into when reading with the cover folded to the back. With time the elastic on the band stretched just enough so the band sticks out just a bit. When I close the cover tightly the band touchs the screen and either closes the book I'm reading or even more fun, opens a different book. First couple of times I was at a lose as to what happened. Thought it was the Kindle and finally realized it was the cover. I just put it to sleep if I'm closing it up tight. No more problem.

Char I had a problem with my K3Gs cover. This cover had the metal hooks but NO light. The problems started almost immediately and when I contacted Kindle CS they credited my account for a new cover.
Since I installed the new cover I've had no problems.

Shirley (shirleythekindlereader) I have never had a cover on mine, I think my issue is number on device.

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've been told that is caused by the covers with the pins damaging the inside of the Kindle. I was warned to avoid these covers and stick to the ones with the elastic.

Bonix | 4 comments I had the same problem with my kindle 3 and the cover with no light. My device was rebooting a few times per week, I called CS and they replaced it. But after a few months the problem started again, and it was worse than before. I read some forums with people complaining about the cover, so I used my kindle for a whole month without the cover and I did not have a single reboot, as soon as I hooked the cover, it booted in less then 10 minutes.
I called CS again and explained the situation, at first they wanted to replace my kindle again, but then they agreed to replace my cover. I've been using this cover for 2 months now, and no reboot.
On this model that I received they have changed the hooks that attach on the device, the old one use to be a metal painted in black, on the new one the hooks are not painted and have a cooperish color.

Kat (elusivekat) | 10 comments I remember when I first got my Kindle 3G in 2010 September it would always spontaneously reboot for no reason at all. I never thought about the cover! It was the hooked cover but without light.
However I think by 2011 January or February, there was a software update for the Kindle, and after I ran the update I have had no more such rebooting problems.
I later changed to a slip in cover in 2011 August, still no reboot problems. But I think any new Kindles bought now would have had the software updated as well, so maybe it's some other issue...

So after the update when you had no more problems, were you still using the original cover? I am wondering if I could go back to using the cover it originally came with?

message 16: by Bonix (new)

Bonix | 4 comments Well, I had the reboot issue with my original kindle (bought in October 2010) and my replacement (replaced in August 2011), and I always update the device when a new software is out. So I believe that on my case the problem was the cover, not the device or software.

Yeah, if I'm not mistaken, after the software update, i still used the original cover for 6 months or so, no problems after that.

Like Bonix says, i think the problem depends whether it is the device itself or the accessories. I'm glad my problem resolved itself with a software update.

Char Thank you both for answering! I think I'm just going to stick with my newer cover.

David Moren | 1 comments My friend has the same problem and solved it - by a few steps. He tried to refresh firmware but in the end he had to open Kindle. More about it on his blog: http://www.businessit.cz/cz/amazon-ki... - he describes it there in detail.

Jen Cichowski | 1 comments I had the same problem with my Kindle Paperwhite 4. I was ready to toss it, but decided to try and pry the cover off the back and check the battery. Good thing I did. Note: the cover has solid snap in plastic nodes on the bottom of the cover, but hook-type plastic nodes on the top and top two nodes on either side-so be careful to pop off the bottom first, then slide it open. I unscrewed and removed the battery, waited about 1 min, then replaced the battery. My Kindle is now working like new. Again, I waited until I was ready to chuck it so I didn't have anything to lose. :)
