Just started this book (I am on 103 of 900+ pages) and it is amazing. It is really difficult when I read that his mother thought his art is "ridiculous". ugh! The trauma, some of his own doing, is just sad.

I'm reading it now and am on page 200. It's a great read, but I agree with you: terribly sad. It's the first biography I've read where the subject appears to have been born with mental illness, and the fact that the story takes place at a time when there was less sophistication about how to diagnose and treat it makes the whole thing more tragic and frustrating. You can just see that Vincent was doomed despite his magnificent, inspired talent. The people who wrote this book also did a great job on Jackson Pollack, if you're interested in biographies of artists.

I thought this was the best book on Van Gogh ever written. He did bring much of his misery on himself, it doesn't take away from the tragedy of his life.

I appreciated this book because before I read it I knew so little about Van Gogh. His life was so sad and yet his art is so beautiful. I did find it a little tedious at times though
