VMom (votermom) | 23 comments Can I use this photo for the author profile? Wiki says it is in public domain but I don't know if the policy is to take that at face value?

Sandra | 31514 comments I'm pretty sure Not. You must have permission of the author or the holder of the copyright of the photo.

Kate O'Hanlon (kateohanlon) | 11 comments I'd say yes, the holder of the copy right has explicitly said on the licence that they've released the picture into the public domain, "I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law."
The whole point of them doing so is so that people don't have to ask individual permission surely?

Actually, it has a Creative Commons license, which is not the same as public domain.

No, wikimedia released under creative commons look like something this (depending on which sort of cc licence is used) http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tem...

The photo Mayakda linked to specifically says the copyright holder has released the work to the public domain, which is different to licensing it under a creative commons license. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tem...

This is what happens when I don't actually take the time to check. I apologize.

If the work has been released to the public domain, then as far as I know there are no limitations on its use.
