I haven't read the Dresden Files, so can't help you there.
Did like Butcher's Codex Alera, however.

Hi Adriana, I was very cautious when I first approached Jim Butchers Dresden Series, Because I am a huge fan of epic fantasy and I wasn't sure I would enjoy an Urban fantasy, however I loved it. The story is very intriguing, but the writing holds value in its own right. Butcher does an amazing job at creating realistic, modern, and dynamic characters, with unique tool sets, then he places them in impossible situations. In some ways this places him with every other fantasy series where a hero is faced with an impossible task, but it's a story i as a read, and authors continually return to, so "if it ain't broke don't fix it."
I am currently on book 4 of codex alera, and I am enjoying it immensely. of the two series I find it to be the better.

I'm Beth. My comfort zone with fantasy is heavy high fantasy tomes with too many proper nouns and tasty worldbuilding. Lately, since I'm in grad school and it's difficult to get through those on a regular schedule, I've been on a short story kick.

So I actually just joined good reads and finished up my book shelf and thought it would be a good idea to join a group. I found this one pretty quick and read through some of the topics, replies and introductions and thought I would fit in well. :)
I actually have been reading for a very long time, through a whole load of genre's but only for the past 3 years or so been really into fantasy. It started with the Codex alera series and then after that wheel of time caught me and swallowed me up. I've loved fantasy since then and you can check out my bookshelf to see what i've read.
I really enjoy long series like WoT, The magician series (R.E feist) and others because I enjoy continuity and building a bond between characters where i can let my imagination build a world over a long series of books.
I mainly joined Goodreads because I find myself at a stump on what to read next, so I thought gathering up some recommendations would be a good way to start. :)
Anyway, Nice to meet you all.

@Robin : The wheel of time was a very good read for me, it had every element I look for in fantasy books. Huge expansive and detailed terrains and maps. A nice but not too large number of characters that each get enough PoV moments (maybe too many sometimes lol) to make sure they always feel relevant and important. just overall a great series.
@brenda: Way of the kings was amazing! if you can reccoment anything like that it would be awesome!

I've always been a fan of the genre, but up until recently I wasn't reading much fantasy. Besides, before I got my Kindle, I didn't have much access to fantasy books in English (I'm Argentinian but I truly hate Spanish translations).
My welcome-back-saga was Mistborn, which I truly loved, except maybe for Sanderson's obsession and often infantile views regarding religions, which were completely one-sided, never mentioning that all of them also have a bad side. Then again, the worldbuilding, magic system and creatures like the Kandra amazed me.
Then I picked up Joe Abercrombie's books. The Blade Itself didn't wow me, but with the second book I ended up falling in love with that world and especially the character of Logen Ninefingers (Say one thing for Logen Ninefingers, say he's a lovable cunt). And Abercrombie's prose is just awesome.
Finally, I picked up Prince of Thorns, which I truly enjoyed. I thought it was your run-of-the-mill fantasy setting, so imagine my surprised when it was slowly revealed (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!) that it was a post-apocalyptic world with lots of magics in it.
When I make myself some time, my next book will, obviously, be King of Thorns and then Emperor of Thorns. After that, I don't know, so I await for your recommendations. I haven't read A Song of Ice and Fire, nor the Stormlight Archive or the Kingkiller Chronicles since I usually stay away from unfinished sagas that don't have an ending on sight. So if you fine people can recommend something that has already ended, or is about to, I'd appreciate it even more.

Adriana Jim Butcher's Dresden series is one if not my favourite series. Harry Dresden is definitely my favourite character in fiction. I love how Butcher portrays his characters and how he allows them to grow as the series progresses. Also unlike some fantasy authors Butcher doesn't make his magic system explanations too convoluted, this however doesn't detract from one's enjoyment of the magic in the series. Also I love Harry's sense of humour and sarcasm, his sarcasm adds charm and character to the series.

Arron I recommend reading crucible of souls as soon as you can. I came across it when looking through my updates. It's a very well done book. It doesn't have as many POVs as Wheel Of time which is a plus. The magic system is well done without being convoluted. The characters are relatable and well written. Also I'd give Blood song by Anthony Ryan a shout. It's an exceedingly well done book. BTW I rated both of these suggestions five stars.
Blood Song is one of the books that I am currently reading. It is very good .

The sequel "The Tower Lord" unfortunately doesn't have the same level of excellence in writing.

I've heard that from other people. But apparently despite the drop in quality, it's still a very good read. I'm looking forward to getting around to reading it. The protagonist is one of my current favourite characters.

How far have you gotten?

I'm a lifelong fantasy & SF reader. Lately I've been spending a lot of time in the car, ferrying my kids around, so I usually have at least one audiobook and at least one physical book going at a time. Right now I'm listening to The Shadow Rising as I work my way through the Wheel of Time series. I recently finished reading The Well of Ascension, The Wise Man's Fear, and Redshirts.
Maybe I'll hop over to the "what are you reading this month" thread and go into more detail...

The Tower Lord is a good book, it just doesn't focus on Vaelin like the first book does and I think this is because of the bloodsong.

please note that we read 2 books every month and would encourage you to join us if possible. We nominate and vote for these a couple of months in advance. Once again please read the rules and join us during those times.
As a club we are easy going but prefer our members to be polite and friendly. Bad behaviour will not be tolerated anymore.
so welcome, enjoy and please read the rules and note that this group is for readers not writers so please no pushing of your own works!
thankyou.

I just can't get into audiobooks. The few I've tried I've found the narrator to be quite stiff or dull.
Any particular recommendation that could possibly change my idea?

It's a shame that Vaelin isn't the main focus, that was one of the positives of the first book in my opinion.

I looked at your "to-read" shelf and recommend the audio book for The Name of the Wind, The Fault in Our Stars, and Prince of Fools.

Sorry Bev, somehow this chats sprouted off of introductions. Keep up the good work :-)

Matias the hands down best representation of audiobooks is the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. James Marsters is just perfection in all parts. I agree some narrators can kill a book :)
At the moment I'm really enjoying Sabriel which is narrated by the marvelous Tim Curry.
The Rook was well done too [the chequy - spelled wrong I'm sure] series that's recently begun.
Patrick Rothfuss' kingkiller books are well done as audio as well
A good narrator makes the audiobook even better than the voice in my head when I read.
A great one BECOMES the voice in my head for the book when I read it in print.

Chuckle. If you cant find one, feel free to start one. Sure it will be popular.

I currently reside in Australia, but I'm a "True Blue Brit"
I never read much until senior School when I was around 12 years old, I remember my English Teacher chose a book to study by the name of "The Hobbit" (you may have heard of it) amazingly enough the class didn't like it and we only read the first couple of chapters before moving on. I was absolutely hooked though, to the point I borrowed it from the School library and read it in my own time (which reminds me I must return it, it's only about 40 years late)
That was the start of my love affair with reading and the fantasy genre in particular.
Now I've borred you senseless I will go back into my hole and continue to lurk ;)

I have been a reader since I can remember, bringing books to preschool and sometimes escaping to a quiet spot to read while we had free play time outside. I would say I discovered and got into fantasy as a genre pretty recently. Sure, I loved the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings books as a teen, but I never specifically seeked them out, they just happened to find their way to me. In the last year or two, however, I've been finding myself completely immersed in the wonderful worlds built by George R.R. Martin, Patrick Rothfuss, Robin Hobb and others. Most recently I've devoured the entire Realm of the Elderlings collection of books in audio book format (I have a long commute, hah) and have since been searching for another series to start but unable to find the right book or series. Recommendations are welcome!

I'm a HUGE fan of fantasy and have loved the genre ever since I read The Hobbit when I was a child. I've always been a dreamer and there's something about the worlds, heroes and villains fantasy authors create that completely enthrals me...
My favourite authors include J. R. R. Tolkien (obviously), George R. R. Martin, Robert Jordan, Patrick Rothfuss, Peter V. Brett and Robert V. S. Redick.
Who do you all like to read?

Hi Adriana and welcome! I didn't know Guy Gavriel Kay, but you've sparked my curiosity and like Italian I'd be curious to read Tigana. A good historical novel is always fascinating, better if bring the imagination to own country.
See you soon.
