Currently reading: Fire and Hemlock by Dianna Wynne Jones
I'm also new on Goodreads (ex-Shelfari user), so I'm looking forward to making some friends in the gr community.

Hi Sam! I'm a new member (of goodreads and this group) from Canada as well. I just checked out your shelf and we seem to have quite a few books in common-- particularly Tamora Pierce!
Welcome to Goodreads and this group from a fellow newbie :)

Haven't heard of Tamora Pierce, interesting that you both mention her. I'll check her out.

She's a YA author who writes kick-ass female fantasy heroes mainly geared toward pre-teen/teenage girls. I would imagine it'd be hard to come across her unless you started reading her at a young age. Still a favourite of mine after all this time!
Thanks for the welcome :)

:)
If Patrick Rothfuss is your favorite author, then Brandon Sanderson is a must read.
',:)
I've even heard, they sign each other's books."
Thanks for the heads Up am going to have to give him a read :)

Welcome, Rickard! Fantasy books have been my favorite since .....forever!
It started with my dad reading The Hobbit to me.
You may like The Lord of the Rings better, but that is a trilogy. Definitely a classic.
Have you seen the movies? That would give you a little bit of an idea whether this is your kind of fantasy.
Some people prefer urban fantasy, less swords and sorcery.
Keep an eye on our current reads for something that sounds good to you.
Couple more of my favorites....
The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny
Elric by Michael Moorcock
Any and all of their books. (Well...there are a couple I didn't like as much.)
;)
edit:)Goodreads list of classic fantasy..... https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/....
Of course, some of these are young adult.

Brenda, have you read the Corum and Hawkmoon books by Moorcock? They along with Elric and a few others make up his Eternal Champion series.

Yes! I have!
:)

The Riddle-Master of Hed was forgettable to me, but people say this is probably the weakest from the author, so I still have high hopes.

Yes, I was growing up when fantasy (that I love) began. Late 70's early 80's.
So I started with Mythology (Greek and Roman mostly) and Tarzan.
Many of the Arthurian legend stuff, too. Merlin and Gandalf where my first wizard experiences.

It's always been a favorite for me, but I think timing is sometimes a factor in determining our likes and dislikes.
:)

I guess my mythology years were more early 70's, thinking back.
I was definitely reading Moorcock and Zelazny, by late 70's.
Also, The Sword of Shannara, Thomas Covenant, not favorites on a lot of people's lists, but what was available at the time.
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "Sword was alright...I still hold a pretty much deep and abiding hatred for Thomas Covenant, LOL."
You are not the only one :)
You are not the only one :)

My favorite series/books are:
Chronicles of Thomas Covenant series
Crown Conspiracy series
Mistborn
Eragon series
Name of the Wind series
Horns
Elantris

I'm from Iran, English is kinda my second language, so i only started reading english written books 2 years ago, but since then my life has really changed, it's like i suddenly entered this wonderful new world and i always chose fantasy over other genres.
i just decided to read 'half a king' after i finish what i'm reading now, but then i saw that u guys are supposed to finish it by the end of the month, so i wish i had joined sooner, but anyway let me know how it is if any of u finished it.
hope we have fun :)

There are two separate threads set up. One should be spoiler free.

Also check out our previously read books.

My Name is Andrus. I consider myself an avid reader, though not one with a very broad pallet. I have read about 70 books so far this year that were new to me, and re-read a lot of my favorites, however almost all 70 of those books are from the fantasy genre, and at this point It is always a chore for me to find a new & good book to read. I'm hoping that being a part of this group will help me avoid some of the poorly written books I've had to wade through to find Gems Like Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings (my current all time favorite book.)
My favorite series/books in no particular order are:
The Stormlight Archive, by Brandon Sanderson
The Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien
Harry Potter, by J. K. Rowling
The Chronicles of Narnia, by C. S. Lewis
The Black Magician Trilogy, by Trudi Canavan
Lightbringer Series, by Brent Weeks
The Wheel of Time, by Robert Jordan
The Kingkiller Chronicle, by Patrick Rothfuss
A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin
-Formative books-
The Giver, by Lois Lowry
Watership Down, by Richard Adams
A Bridge to Terabithia, by Kathrine Paterson
Making this List was a lot harder than I thought it would be, and I'm sure I'll remember some book or series I've forgotten that deserves a place on this list, but for better of worse these are the books that inspire me.

I live in Florida but am planning to move to Texas.

I got hooked on fantasy novels ever since I first laid eyes on the Homeland (and the rest of the Drizzt series by R.A. Salvatore). Currently I'm reading the Kingkiller Chronicle (on Wise Man's Fear now).
I also plan on getting in on the next group read with The Whitefire Crossing.
Looking forward to meeting everyone! Hopefully there are some other Seattlites here :)

The Stormlight Archive (favorite and reason I started writing)
The Mistborn Trilogy
An allow of low.
Elantris
Warbreaker.
The Travelers gate trilogy.
The Broken Empire Trilogy.
The Emperor's Edge series.
Blood song
Game of thrones and working on Clash of Kings
also reading hobbit.

My name is George. My wife and I live in northern Italy. She is from here, but I am 'Murican. I've several passions, but reading and writing are perennially in the top part of that list.
I read voraciously and have for as long as I can remember. I write, as I always say, for the simple reason of having done so. More or less, the literary equivalent of cocktail napkin doodling. Never even tried to publish anything. In fact, it barely crossed my mind, but lately have thought some about it. Perhaps that will change in the future, but who knows?
Fantasy is usually my number one genre, though at times it has been displaced by Science Fiction or Spy Thrillers. I proudly admit to having read, and liked, a number of YA books as I feel some of the best stories, if not always the writing, are coming out of that category.
Favorite reads? That's almost like listing which breath is my favorite - they are all important! But here are a few Fantasy authors (subject to revision at my whim) I especially enjoy: Tolkien, Gaiman, Salvatore, Butcher, Glen Cook, GRR Martin.

I highly recommend reading the last three books of the Wheel of Time series if you haven't already. Happy reading!

Greg wrote:...I highly recommend reading the last three books of the Wheel of Time..."
It is on my to do list. I am unable to read a series out of order, so to read the last three, requires that I read the first 11.
I've read, among other series, LOTR, A Song of Ice and Fire, the Dune Chronicles, Drizzt/Forgotten Realms and The Sword of Truth books, so have an idea of the commitment.
There are some 3 million words to get through Wheel of Time and I just haven't made the...time. But, I intend on it.
Thank you for the recommendation, Greg.

Sword of truth
Harry Potter
Ranger's Apprentice
ASOIAF
Wheel of time
Kingkiller Chronicles
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Heroes of Olympus
LOTR
Stormlight Archive
Mistborn
Currently struggling with Gardens of the Moon. Malazan is proving very difficult to read. Is it really worth it?

I'm a long time reader, started back in my early teens and never stopped. In addition to fantasy, I read a lot of science fiction, history and science, too.
I've seen a few people list favorite authors, so I thought I'd post a few of my own fantasy favorites:
Patricia Briggs
Jim Butcher
Ursula K. Le Guin
Seanan McGuire
J.R.R. Tolkien
Jack Vance
Roger Zelazny
Looking forward to some interesting discussions!

Ojo, you are not alone. I don't know anyone 'in person' that reads like I do, much less Fantasy. Luckily we have the 'Net, eh?

Welcome to both of you! I am lucky to be in the LA area where we have such a good support for sci-fi/ fantasy fans. I always wish there were more female readers of sci-fi myself. I don't know any IRL really.
Michael, I am currently going through Chronicles of Amber and love it!

Welcome, Michael!
I'm glad you came in.
;)
Heather, I'm glad you are enjoying Zelazny's Amber Chronicles.
How far have you gotten, and are you planning to continue into the next series, with Trumps of Doom?
(Sorry, not able to link from the app.)

Some things in Idlewild series seem to be based off The Chronicles of Amber to me. Has anyone else felt that way?

I love reading fantasy. My favorite authors are Tolkien, Ursula LeGuin, Terry Paratchett, Neil Gaiman, Patrick R. and so many others, but my dearest of all is Guy Gavriel Kay. I adore how he combines history with fantasy. Of course, my favorite book is Tigana, which remembers me Italy in the transition from medieval to renaissance (a totally unbiased opinion ;)
I am going to start reading Assassin's book from Robin Hobb and also I would like to ask if someone can tell me something about Butcher's dresden series, without any spoilers as possible.
Thanks to all!
Adriana

Thanks for the warm welcome Brenda and for moderating the group!"
You're welcome.
Though it is archived in the 2009 archive folder, there are discussion threads on Assassin's Apprentice. You may be interested in reading/commenting.
:)
Also, https://www.goodreads.com/topic/list_... is our spin off, sister, group. The series is discussed in the folder Realms of the Elderlings. Of course, the latest Fool's Assassin, was not out at the time of these reads, so isn't included.
