Hi Fay,welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

I know some people can't stand having to "think" or really buckle down and almost "study" when reading, but I find it fascinating. For this reason, A Song of Ice and Fire and the Malazan series are absolutely fascinating to me. The sheer amount of characters, story lines, history, etc. of the worlds is truly amazing.
If anyone has any recommendations for more series similar to these that I haven't heard of or didn't think to read, please enlighten me!
Look forward to browsing this group some more.

Welcome Chris, Maybe you might want to try Tad Williams's series Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. He has tons of characters and multiple storylines, but with less bad twists than GRRMartin. I discovered him with his fantastic "Otherland" series, which strictly speaking might be Sci-Fi, but with so much fantasy involved that it can be considered a mixture of both. THAT one is incredible, with lots of characters, a wonderfully twisted plot which is real and virtual at the same time, a great imaginative work which I enjoyed reading very much.

Thanks, I will take a look at these!

I've always been a prolific reader of many genres, but the fantasy genre is my favorite. I grew up reading the works of Lloyd Alexander, Susan Cooper, and J. R. R. Tolkien, and many others. During my teenage years, David Eddings, Margaret Weis, and Tracy Hickman were probably my favorites - particularly the Deathgate Cycle and the Rose of the Prophet series by W&H.
More recently, I've finished up the Malazan Book of the Fallen, the Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, and (what's out of) The Kingkiller Chronicles.
I'm excited to join this group and get to know what all of you are reading!
Hi Paul, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.
Hi Marie, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

As I have gotten older, I tend to like more of the grittier and darker, more adult fantasies than the LOTR style epic fantasies

Welcome.

Sara Reece

I’m happy to join groups such as this where the members seem to love fantasy as much as I do. I’ve been reading sci-fi and fantasy for decades now, and I often say that I could qualify as a “hoarder” with the collection of all the hard copies of fantasy novels I have in boxes and on shelves. I’m pretty sure I could be retired and rich(er) with all the money I’ve invested in the books.
I do enjoy other genres—mystery, adventure, psychological thrillers and historical fiction; and I’m a sucker for a good romance. But my first and most enduring love has always been sci-fi and fantasy. I started out with writers like Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Aldous Huxley, Poul Anderson and Ursula Le Guin. I later moved over to fantasy, beginning with Tolkien and Norton, then going on to people like Frank Herbert, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Raymond Feist, Robert Jordan, George Martin, Mercedes Lackey, and many books in the Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms series.
R.A. Salvatore was a favorite author for a time, and Drizzt is possibly my favorite character in the genre, particularly as he appeared in the Icewind Dale and Dark Elf trilogies. The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay and the IceWind Dale Trilogy are two of my most favorite series. Other recent interests have included Patrick Rothfus, Gail Z. Martin, Daniel Abraham, Jacqueline Carey, GJ Kelly, MR Mathias, Diana Gabaldon, David Wells, Juliet Marillier, and Daniel Arenson.
I’m currently reading Ice Forged by Gail Z. Martin. Recently finished books include Honor Bound and Honor Found by Michael Southwick, and Raven Flight by Juliet Marillier. And now that I have Jordan’s A Memory of Light on my kindle, I may just finish the series. I look forward to sharing in the discussions here. Please feel free to say hello and to make a friend request.

Cheers :o)
