Liam Perrin (liamperrin) | 194 comments Hi all! My name is Liam and I can still remember finishing my first fantasy book (The Hobbit) and feeling like my best friend had just moved away because the story was over. I'm a former video game developer (I worked on the Myst series back in the day) and now a grad student on the surface of the sun...I mean...in Phoenix, Arizona. I've been Too Busy to Read (don't let this happen to you) for years now - so I'm looking to add some great stuff to my TBR shelf and make up for lost time.

Katey Hey everyone! I'm Katey from southern Florida. I'm an elementary school teacher who has always loved books! I got into science fiction/fantasy in high school when a friend in trig class loaned me the Dragonlance book "Dragons of Autumn Twilight." Since then I have loved all kinds of fantasy, from MMO video games to movies and (of course) books!

Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 58 comments Hi my name is Andrew, I live in Italy and I am a newbie in this group. I like fantasy books since I was a child and I began with Terry Brooks and continuing with many others. Last year I bought my Amazon Kindle and I began to read so many ebooks. My favorites authors from this genre are surely George R. R. Martin, Terry Brooks, David Eddings and John R.R. Tolkien, but there are still many that I haven't read.

Franz McLaren (franzmclaren) Hey everyone, my name is Franz McLaren. I'm living in southern California but want to move really badly. definitely a die hard fan of fantasy (books AND movies, so if you want to talk about either, I'm your guy!). As far as books go, I like lord of the rings, game of thrones, wheel of time, legend of the seeker, and the list goes on. Also I like the lord of the rings movies and the legend of the seeker show, and I guess I should watch the game of thrones show but just haven't gotten around to it

Roger Bellini My name is Roger Bellini. I'm a Co-editor of an upcoming anthology (Neverland's Library) and a fantasy book reviewer. Because of the aforementioned, you might now know that I'm a book addict. I've recognized the problem and am working to facilitate it.

If you'd like to checkout my anthology, here's a link: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/nev...

If you'd like to see my review site, you can do so here: http://adailydoseofrandr.com/

Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) I'm Greg and I've got a few fantasy books selling on Amazon. I've been reading fantasy books ever since middle school, and got serious about writing some a few years back.

It seems like there's just too many good ones out there to read, and to be honest, I haven't even started in on the final WoT book, even though I've had it since February. Pretty bad, I know, especially since I started the series back in 1996.

I've got several new posts on making a fantasy world on my website for writing http://www.bigskywords.com so stop by and drop me a line if you like my next ideas.

message 2668: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Nathaniel My name is Matt.

I am from Detroit.
My start in fantasy is the same as just about the rest of you. LOTR. (Big surprise there).
What can I say? I love being in the world that is built in a fantasy book. I am totally capable of getting lost in that world. Everything from immersing myself in the story, devoting hours to guessing at what the author is doing, finding maps on the Internet for the particular series and then planning little fantasy road trips in my head as I look at them . Scouring the web for artwork from the various characters and creatures in the books with the hope of drawing a better picture in my head hahaha.
I like pickles and mustard on my sandwiches. I like any candy with peanut butter. My best friend is a black cat named Ramsey.

My favorite authors are:
GRRM
JRRT
Joe Abercrombie
Patrick Rothfuss
Brandon Sandersen
Brent Weeks
Jim Butcher
Robert Jordan

My favorite series is a Song of Ice and Fire(however all ASOIAF geeks know this to be a bittersweet relationship).

I am delighted and honored to make the acquaintance of all of you lords and ladies and look forward to thousands of great discussions as well as hearing your opinions and letting said opinions guide me in my relentless quest for the perfect book .

I am currently reading 3 books.

The Black Prism
The Assassins Apprentice
The Lies of Locke Lamora

message 2669: by Greg (new)

Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) Boy I sure liked that Name of the Wind book by Rothfuss. That was a gripping fantasy novel for sure. I've had Lies of Locke Lamora on my shelf for years, but have never gotten around to it. He sure has a great cover on that second book in that series.

message 2670: by Siddharth (new)

Siddharth Bharath My name is Sid and I'm a huge fantasy fiction addict.
I've been reading fantasy ever since high school. My first series was Narnia back in the 6th grade. I then read The Hobbit and LOTR.
I think I really got into fantasy when I was given the first book of WoT for my 14th birthday. Ever since then I've read pretty much every well-known fantasy author out there, and many unheard of ones. I always keep tabs on the latest authors and was a Game of Thrones fan even before the third book came out. BTW, if you like GRRM, read his Dreamsongs. Amazing set of short stories.

My favorite authors are:
Rothfuss
Lynch
GRRM
Guy Gavriel Kay
Sanderson

I think these authors are the very best out there and I'm looking for other authors of similar calibre. I'd appreciate some suggestions from my fellow fantasy readers.

message 2671: by Greg (new)

Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) Have you tried the Lord Foul's Bane series by Stephen R. Donaldson?

It's a bit older, from the 70s or early 80s. The official name is The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

Greg Strandberg (gregstrandberg) Hey Michelle,

Caroline (paper_moonshine) Hi everyone! My name is Caroline and I'm currently living in Charleston. I just graduated from college and am enjoying my last free summer trying to read as many great books as I can. My current fantasy favorites are A Song of Ice and Fire, The Kingkiller Chronicles, anything by the great Diana Wynne Jones, and the adorable How to Train Your Dragon.
I'm always looking for the next great book, especially when it comes to fantasy :D

Mark Stone (calasade) Hello all,

My name is Mark Stone. I joined this group a while ago, but waited to introduce myself until my writing requirements were less. With my novel ready to be published and a novella already out there, I thought now would be a good opportunity to get more involved since I have some free time. I'm so looking forward to reading more!

On a personal note, I currently live in Arizona, though I've been a nomad of sorts, and will be going to Spain this winter. It's the first time I'll have ever been outside the States, so I'm rather excited to visit some real medieval history.

My favorite Fantasy authors include but are not limited :) to: Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, Jordan, Pratchett, Sanderson. Howard is probably my favorite. It's sad he died so tragically and so young. I'm about to read Terry Goodkind for the first time. Pretty sure I'm going to like him. :)

message 2684: by Musaab (new)

Musaab (gwyldir) Hello everyone,

My name is Musaab, recently moved to Michigan. I've been an avid fantasy reader since as long as I can remember actually. Loads of fun memories :)

Started off with Tolkien, of course, the legend that he is. A close second for me is Robert Jordan. After a long time away from any serious reading (life :/ ), I've started to come back to my roots. I've recently read Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, The Death Gate Cycle, the Kingkiller Chronicles, and a few others.

Thinking about starting the Dragonlance books, although the list seems daunting.

Hello Musaab welcome to FBC.

J.F. Pérez (jfpeji) Hi fellows of Goodreads. It is a pleasure to be a member of this community. My name is J.F. Pérez and I am from Spain. Apart from author, I am a recent graduate seeking his first job. Sci-fi and Fantasy are the literary genres that I love. Nowadays, I am finishing to read The Riddle by Alison Croggon. This is the list of my favourite authors although I hope to find out new ones in this group:

Alison Croggon

George R.R. Martin

J.R.R. Tolkien

Thank you for your attention. Best regards.

message 2689: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Benshana I should declare here that I am a writer and publisher.

I still have all my children's books including a complete Enid Blyton, CS Lewis, endless fairy tales, The Hobbit (yes much better than LOTR) Dr Doolittle books, E Nesbit and so on. Am interested in where technology is taking us and think Game of Thrones is quite possibly the least inventive piece of TV in a generation but it is written by someone.

I love imagination. I don't love looking back to the dark ages for sword fights. Nor allowing science fiction to overrule character.

I live in the UK.

Hi Daniel, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

message 2691: by Mimmi (new)

Mimmi (pearlmutter) Hello universe!

My name is Emelie, and I'm new here. I'm a crazy librarian who just as my work entails, reads alot of books. My poison of choice is obvious Fantasy, but I also read other stuff, next on the topp 3 list are sci-fi and fairytales.

I live in Sweden, born and raised, but I've also been away studying in Australia and Japan. Loved both places and someday when money is not a issue, I'll go back and spend some vaccation there. And if you haven't figured it out, I love to travel. Best thing to do is to backpack some real contry life place with a good book as company and get to know the ppl and the contries.

I like cats, baking, knittig and other things you can do with your hands (spent a few years studying to be a fashiondesigner, u name it, I can make it). I also don't have a favorite color, because my preference changes every day. Latest week it's been loads of purple, turqouise, pink and grey. Got piercings and Tattots that my grandmother hate, but which grandmother does like such things?

Big whovian, and a small trekkie, says hello with a vuclan handgesture, and my favorite word is "oomkullrunkelig" which in english would be something like "no-fall-masturbated". It means that however u shake something like acloset or a table, it won't fall over.

Kemp, Dan Abnett, Fritz Leiber, as well as Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb to name a few. I mainly have read out of the Forgotten Realms series and I am now looking to expand out into other Fantasy. I'm looking forward to talking with the group.

Cory (irondruid7) hello everybody!

A little bit about me first. i live in Indiana. I'm 30 minutes away from anything resembling a town and even further from anything interesting, so when i got off the bus from school, there wasn't much to do. My mother believes that idle hands are the devils playground so she got me hooked on books (though i think she just wanted a babysitter of sorts lol). that's how i got hooked on books. LOTR, Eragon, Mistborn, Rangers Apprentice, Darren Shan vampires apprentice, and the Demonata are a few books i liked enough to reread. i have a dirt bike i ride a lot, and my parents property is big enough that i can hunt so i do that often as well. i don't have any experience with groups or forums. And i have a hard time starting a conversation so i hope somebody will help me along.

message 2696: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahc123) Welcome Cory, some good books in your list, hope you enjoy the group, there are always some discussions going on and always lots of help if you are stuck for something to read.

message 2699: by David (new)

David Houpt Hello, everyone!

I am an analytical chemist and work for one of Texas A&M University's largest research programs, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (which has nothing to do with oil exploration; we take geological samples from below the seafloor).

I have the immense good fortune to be married to a wonderful woman who is not only an avid reader, but who is a professional editor! She has been incredibly supportive of my writing efforts.

I've been a role-playing gamer since.... hmmm.... forever, I suppose (does anyone remember the blue box D&D set?) and that's where my desire to create interesting worlds, interesting characters, and interesting plotlines got its start. Although my first novel is high-magic fantasy, I'm comfortable in many genres.

I look forward to talking about books with you folks!

Sincerely,

David
