message 2001: by Kelley (new)

Kelley Hello! I live in Guelph, Ontario and, while I have always loved reading, I am new to the fantasy genre and also to Goodreads. Before last year I had only read (and loved) Tolkiens' Lord of the Rings and the Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. After reading Patrick Rothfuss' amazing books, though, I have now turned my attention toward the other great options in fantasy. I look forward to learning about and discussing new books here. I also currently have no friends on GR so if anyone wants to connect please feel free to send a request!

Hi Kelly, fantasy is wonderful isn't it? Pure escape!

Eli Adelholm (eliadelholm) | 46 comments Hello there! :)

I hail from the country of Denmark. You may call me Eli.
I am not overly well-read in the fantasy genre. I have always, except for being extremely fond of Tolkien's writings, been more of a reader of classical literature. But that is changing, it would appear.
I have chewed myself (greedily) through the first 12 and a half books of Robert Jordan's 'Wheel of Time' series and, in addition, I have just begun reading George Martins 'A song of Ice and fire' series. But I will need to broaden my horizon, I'm thinking, perhaps start reading some books that are not necessarily part of huge series. So, thence, I am here.

Nice to meet you.

message 2005: by Erika (new)

Erika (erika-is-reading) Hi, everyone. I'm so glad to find this group! I'd been a member of "building a sci fi / fantasy library" and missing the monthly book club feature (which I love on my Apocalypse Whenever and 1001 Books groups). I am a big fan of the fantasy genre but not as well read as my husband so looking forward to catching up. Huge fan decades ago of Tolkien, now a big fan of the Martin series, recently finished Patrick Rothfuss's two books, also like non-series books (e.g., jonathan strange & mr norrell), and really excited to see what books you all steer me towards. For me, that's the best part of Goodreads: stumbling onto books that I might not have found otherwise.

IRL I am a middle aged lawyer at a large law firm...

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments Welcome to the group, Erika. Glad to have you among us.

I'm also from the legal field (going on twenty years) but not an attorney (support staff ... IT department).

Hi Eli. I love the classics too, Thomas Hardy is a favourite. I'm half way through Game of Thorns myself and am really enjoying it. Welcome.

Hi Erika. I love the Katherine Kerr Deverry series, have you heard of it?

message 2010: by Ashley (new)

Ashley V. Hey guys! I've just joined the group and I am thrilled to be apart of it! A little bit about me...

I live in the Atlanta, GA area. I recently graduated college, finally, after working full time and going to school. Now I am in search of my 'dream job' in a writing or editing position. As I greatly near the 30 yrs and older category, I still am taking life as it comes and will be happy with whatever I have at the moment.

I have had a love of reading since I could pick up a book. I like reading fantasy books the most because they are definitely an escape from reality, but I enjoy reading many other types of books as well.
I couldn't give you an all time favorite author, but I really am loving Carol Goodman's books lately. (I actually got to interview her!)

I joined this group to help me get introduced to great new reads and because I actually have time to read what I want to now. =)

I'm looking forward to chatting with everyone! Happy Reading!

message 2012: by Mags (new)

Mags Hi!!! ... I'm new here in the group ... and well ... I've rediscovered my love for epic fantasy books ... and I say rediscover because I've always love them!! But in college I had little time to read and then I had less time to read when I started working ... and now I have time!!! I'm studying my master degree in engineering but TNX GOD this semester is not so hard so I have a lot of time to read what I love ...

Everything started with Tolkien and Dragonlance some years ago, and now I'm completely and absolutely in love with series such as Patrik Rothfuss Kingkiller Chronicles and Brandon Sanderson Mistborn Trilogy ... right now I'm reading Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence...

Game of Thrones, A Wise Man's Fear and The Way of Shadows are waiting for me on my bookshelf ... I guess that's what I'll be reading next ...

Anyway ... I read a little of every genre so I'm open for suggestions and looking forward to chat with everybody ...

message 2016: by Megan (new)

Megan (megancallaway) Hello, I'm Megan. I've recently realized that I love fantasy and I thought joining this group would be a great way to discover new authors and series. There is so much out there that it can be a bit overwhelming to find the right book when you're just starting out. I'm really excited read along with everyone!

message 2017: by Alu (new)

Alu (tome_reader_alu) Hello. My name's Alisha, but everyone calls me Alu. I've always been a big fan of fantasy. It was what really got me into reading. I really hope to meet some great people and have some amazing discussions about some of our favorite and not so favorite, books.

John Beachem | 373 comments Greetings and salutations to Megan and Alisha. Welcome to the group :)

message 2019: by Susannah (new)

Susannah Susannah here. I lurk some, log in less and generally think about spending more time on GR than I am able to do, but working on changing that. I am currently in a small town in Colorado dreaming of getting back to the big city life. I read in phases and go across most fiction genres. I am hoping to find some new fantasy authors and books on here (I've already ordered some books I have seen posted) I'm looking forward to exploring more of this group - though I'm sure my bank account isn't. ;)

Cheryl Hager (cheryl_is_reading) Hi All, I've been on GR for about 1 year and have been in search of a fantasy/sci-fi book club locally with no luck. I just joined another book club on GR, but it seems only reviews are being posted about the book at this time. As a teacher and closet librarian, I wanted to get more experience with a 'working' online book club. At some point I wouldn't mind leading a discussion--just have to get a computer and internet at home first. :)

You can post this in author self promotion folder. This is a group for readers, not for authors.

message 2028: by Derek (new)

Derek Prior (dpprior) Hello all, I'm Derek. I've been reading fantasy for over thirty years. I'm a big fan of R.E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Michael Moorcock, David Gemmell, and Stephen Donaldson. I used to run a review site specialising in fantasy. These days I edit fantasy novels for some well known authors and I also write a bit myself.

message 2029: by Derek (new)

Derek Prior (dpprior) Eek! I forgot Joe Abercrombie! I discovered his writing two years ago and think it's helping to reinvigorate the genre. Great new author.

message 2037: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (emerald_kelp_cat) Hi my name is Ashley & I have decided that my "new years resolution" (established @ the end of January) was to make 2012 the year of the book and read more. I have always enjoyed fantasy science fiction type books; and at present am working through the 3rd book of the Golden Compass Trilogy and am having a hard time with it. The Subtle Knife is challenging my spiritual beliefs and I can appreciate why people didn't enjoy it. Anyway, I live in the Pacific NW of the USA and am closing in on my 4th decade.....

message 2038: by Shereen (last edited Feb 19, 2012 06:10AM) (new)

Shereen Vedam Hi,

I've been with GoodReads for a while but am new to the Fantasy Book Club discussion group.

My favorite new fantasy author is Terry Pratchett. Discovered him in 2011 and have been going through his books ever since. Love some of his phrases. I get odd looks when I break out laughing on the bus to work.

Currently reading Eric.

Shereen :)

message 2039: by Dan (new)

Dan I suppose it is about time for me to introduce myself since I have been a member for several weeks now.

I'm Dan, a 28 year old college graduate (BS in Anthropology if anyone was interested) from the frigid state of Wisconsin. The long, brutal winters here (well not so much this winter) leaves a lot of time to stay indoors and read!

I have been reading fantasy since I first picked up Lord of the Rings 20 years ago at the young age of 8. When I was a kid I would tear through books so fast that initially my school at the time thought I had a learning disability since I would sit and wait for other kids to catch up with me. Eventually they learned the truth and I was put into advanced reading classes.

Now that I am out of college and trying to find the elusive "big boy job" I have more time for reading and hope to jump into some discussions with the people here.

message 2040: by Mitchell (new)

Mitchell Safeway (monstewer) | 15 comments Hi, My name is Martin and I've been a big fan of fantasy since I started reading CS Lewis when I was about ten or so and then David Eddings after that.

For a while in my late teens I presumed I'd outgrown fantasy (hah) and then somebody foisted the first book of the Wheel of Time series on me and that absolutely blew my mind. Still I was ashamed of my new addiction and used to sneak into bookshops and hurry home with the books under my coat.

These days I try to embrace my geekiness more though reading time is more limited than I would like with a wife and three kids shouting me even now as I write this. I'm hoping this group will force me to find more time for my reading and the one book a month should do that. Wow, I used to read about five or six a month in the good old days :)

Favourite authors are:

GRRM
Guy Gavriel Kay
Robin Hobb
R Scott Bakker
Janny Wurts

I'm looking forward to participating in the group

message 2042: by Brandi (new)

Brandi (crimsonquill157) My name is Brandi. I'm from a small town in North Carolina. I graduate from high school this year and plan to get my degree in English w/teaching licensure (and yes, I have already been told I am insane for wanting to be a teacher LOL). I love reading - obviously - and music.

I actually don't have any favorite authors or series. I have primarily read young adult fantasy, and I hope to broaden my horizons by joining this group. :)

message 2043: by Roy (new)

Roy Hi there, my name is Roy Anthony Hill, I live in Darlington, Co. Durham in England. I am originally from Manchester, but moved to North East England for love.

I don't work for a living but I am a volunteer at Hospital Radio, in my spare time I love to read books, listen to music (Metal/Rock), watch DVD's, write to penpals and walks.

My fave authors include David Baldacci, Lee Child, Nelson DeMille, Vince Flynn, Tami Hoag, John Grisham, James Herbert and many, many more

Katharine (Ventureadlaxre) (skypirate) My name is Katharine, I'm 25 from rural Australia. My day job is in government, but otherwise I review books for publishers and currently judge the Aurealis Awards, which is an Australian award for spec fic. My favourite authors are Scott Lynch, Patrick Rothfuss, Robin Hobb, Tansy Rayner Roberts, Mira Grant and Brandon Sanderson.
Other than writing and knitting, I love to travel. Tokyo and London are my favourite places to visit. I also adore Doctor who and BBCs Sherlock.
I joined because I saw that next you're reading 'Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell' and I've been meaning to read that for so very long. I'm looking forward to it :)

message 2045: by Aderyn (new)

Aderyn Wood (aderynwood) Welcome everyone :) And Katherine how to you get to be a judge?

Katharine (Ventureadlaxre) (skypirate) Each year there is a chance to put your hand up to be selected - you have to answer a few questions and write why you would like to be a judge and what you can bring to the panel.

On the Aurealis Awards site, it says: 'Judges are volunteers and are drawn from the speculative fiction community; from diverse professions and backgrounds, and may include academics, booksellers, librarians, published authors, publishing industry professionals, reviewers and enthusiasts. The only qualification necessary is a demonstrated knowledge of and interest in their chosen category.'

So everyone has a chance :) I think this year we had to read 37 books within six months, most being 500+ pages each. Easy for some, a struggle for others. I've loved every minute of it :)

message 2049: by Bryanruss (new)

Bryanruss Hi, my name is Bryan and I live in Cardiff in Wales. My wife introduced me to the site and it seemed to be a great way to find new books to read and new people to talk about them with.

I didn't get into reading until my late teens when my dad handed me 'redemption of althalus' by David Eddings which I loved, and then subsequently devoured all of his other books. I have not been without a book since.

I am a big fan of Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series, Tolkien's world, George R.R. Martin, Jacqueline Carey and the 'Black Library' books which some of you may know publish novels set in the Warhammer and Warhammer 40k worlds.

I am really looking forward to being able to talk about the books that I love and get a positive response from people who actually know what I'm talking about :)

Anyway, hope to see you on the discussion boards in the near future. Happy posting! :)
