Soumi, yeah, one was the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher *gag* it was AWFUl. I also just read Game of Thrones, which I really thought was going to be good but I ended up not liking it at all. The other was Orc: Bad Blood by I forget the authors name. I guess I wasn't surprised by the last one, I just thought I'd give it a shot.
I see you like Wuthering Heights, that's hands down my favorite book of all time. I love the Heathcliff! He's so creepy and awesome!

Heathcliff is one of my favorite male lead, he's tormented, tortured but his has his own charm.
Have you read The hunger games? you can try The infernal devices or the mortal instrument series, if you haven't read those already.

I'm a physics and astronomy high school teacher from Texas. I love all things sci-fi/fantasy and read as much as I possibly can. I'm excited to join the group and get new recommendations for books!
Right now I'm finishing up a series by Sara Douglass, which I have enjoyed, until this last book where things got a bit ...odd. I'll be reading Novembers book if I have time, but I'll definitely be jumping in with Decembers!

Hi everyone, I'm not only new to this group, but to the site as well! I love fantasy stories but I see way too much YA vampire/werewolf/paranormal stuff these days, while I don't mind it once in awhile, I would much prefer something different and aimed toward adults. I'm a future psychology and pre-med major, with my ultimate goal to be a psychiatrist. My favorite non-fiction genre is in fact, psychology. I have an addiction to perfume and eating international candies. And I have a collection of flamingo stuffed animals.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this group. And I thought I would join because I am an avid fantasy reader. My name is Brittney. I'm currently 23-years old, born and raised in Michigan. I'm currently working on my own fantasy novel that I plan on publishing by next year. Also I'm studying Japanese in college. My favorite fantasy authors would have to be J. R. R. Tolkien and J.K Rowling.
A few novels that I like are "The Alchemyst", "Archeron" (I'm still reading this one), and "The Hunger Games".
I have a feeling that I will enjoy this group! :)

hello I'm Elaine from NE England. I was brought up on fantasy as my dad used to read to us most nights from a young age. He read Narnia , The hobbit and Lord of the rings ,Ursula le Guinn, Alan Garner. He was a great story teller and my love for fantasy was born. Of course I carried on as I started reading for myself.I seem to have some catching up to do as I've been ill and not read for a few years . So I'm looking forward to getting into The Game of Thrones series , and books by Guy Gaveral Kay , among others. I'm open to suggestians :)

I started making up stories about that game, discovered a whole freakin' section of the bookstore with books like that, and have probably spent enough money in that section to retire the US debt ever since.

Nice long list there, Kelly - and of a goodly assortment of skilled authors, at that. You even read some of the ancient fellows in Latin, did you? Kudos on that - I always wondered how the English translations held up to the Latin versions, but not knowing that language myself the opportunity to answer that has never really risen.
Welcome! I think you'll fit in well here - and if you do go the self-publish route, wish you all the best. There's plenty about who have gone that route, so if you've any questions I'm sure there's more than a few who would be willing to help you out. I'll be publishing my own first bit of fantasy through the self-pub route in just a few weeks now, actually - and an adventure it certainly is!

I always wondered how the English translations held up to the Latin versions, but not knowing that language myself the opportunity to answer that has never really risen.Most English translations hold up fairly well. Since it's epic poetry and not something controversial like one of the histories, more "freedom" in the translation is tolerated.
The Latin versions are very lyrical and I enjoyed listening to them. The translations lose a lot of the rhythmic quality since you can't really "do" the dactylic hexameter easily in English and keep an accurate translation.
I just wanted to respond to that, not drag the thread off-topic. Apologies if this post is out-of-bounds. :)

I've read Fantasy since I was a itty bitty boy of ten, when I got my first taste of Shannara. I must admit, I've never enjoyed the taste of paper. Too dry. Too... crinkly. Things went quickly downhill after that. I devoured Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms, snuggled with tidbits of Eddings, and enjoyed a love/hate relationship with Hobb. She doesn't know it yet, so please keep it on the hush.
I've lived everywhere from New York to Michigan to Florida to Georgia to Norway. Yes, the last is last because it's bloody awesome. Sadly, half of my book collection stayed in Scandinavia with some friends.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, the scents of chocolate and coffee, and the smoothness of a feather. However, this isn't that type of site.

Hi.. I just joined.. :) Im a newbie to the fantasy book world. My first book was the Name of the Wind.. Which i loved. I then read Wise Mans Fear.. which was not as good as the first one but still pretty good. I just finished Way of kings.. Totally awesome. And now im trying to get through Assassin's Apprentice.. Its really slow. But Im looking for some new books to read and would love any suggestions..

I read boths books as well and like you. I thought the first one was better or maybe it was just my expection.
Any I would recommend Drops from the Kingdom: The Silver Arrow and The Warded Man both are great books

I'm a Texan without the twang; linguistics, Classical studies, & English are my thing; I buy books faster than I read them; & I take care of two lovely fancy rats named Wednesday and Freya, as well as a boyfriend that also loves to read. :D
I'm very happy to find a thriving fantasy book club on GoodReads! I'm familiar with the mainstream authors like Gaiman, Pratchett, R.A. Salvatore (who was my hero amidst the bulk of my adolescence--I have an omnibus signed by him!), and so on, but I'm here to see what other fantasy fans are reading and to discover what hidden gems might otherwise be passing me by. :)

Hello everyone! I'm new to Goodreads and so far I find it really cool.Anywho, I go by Liang Lan online and I love to read (haha, don't we all here?) Growing up I read whenever I could and often when I shouldn't. I've lived in several states, I was born and currently go to college in Northern New York. I've lived in New York, North Carolina, New Jersey, Florida, and Virginia. I spent the longest time living in South Florida, where I graduated with an IB diploma (prime reason for sad lack of reading at the time). I attend university in Upstate New York, going after a liberal art's bachelor's degree in Asian Studies and Government. Currently, I'm studying abroad in Japan, attempting to grasp the Japanese language. I've taken four years of French in high school, two years of university of Chinese and Japanese each. So far, I think Chinese is the easiest, no conjugation!
I loved The Chronicles of Narnia and fantasy novels that could take me to other amazing and magical worlds. I still check closets and cabinets looking for a way...
In high school I was unfortunately very busy and now that I'm in college I'm trying to get back into reading. I still love to read children's fantasy (over the summer I got addicted to the Redwall series, RIP Brain Jacques).
Recently, I've been branching out into 'higher' fantasy, and I find myself drawn to dark/horror fantasy. I also like fantasy with themes like political intrigue, war, ect. I've started looking less and less at the newer YA fiction and fantasy, because I'm very, very tired of Twilight and the recent obsession with "paranormal romance". Don't get me wrong, I like vampires and werewolves, but I like it more when they don't sparkle or just run around half naked. Oh! and I love dragons.
I've also been getting into comics and graphic novels lately. I'm particularly loving Transmetropolitan. I'm also a big fan of manga and eagerly looking for new and interesting series to read.
My fave authors (in rough order) include: J.R.R. Tolkien, Tamora Pierce, C. S. Lewis, Frank Herbert, Alan Moore, Agatha Christie. I love The Lord of the Rings. Like, almost unhealthily. To me, it exemplifies everything I love of fantasy epics and stories in general.
So, I guess that's all really. I look forward to participating and reading lots of new fantasy books with y'all!

Hello! My name is Kimberly, 24 years old, from the Netherlands and I've been reading fantasy for more than 12 years now.. Favourites are Tolkien, Feist (even though he hasn't written anything decent in years..), Eddings, Weis & Hickman, Hobb and Jordan. If you haven't read anything by her, I'd recommend starting with the Riddle-Master trilogy, which are classics. I also love the 'Cygnet' duology, and really, all of her newer books are excellent as well!
