I live in Ontario, Canada and my son introduced me to the fantasy genre, and I am now hooked. I like Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Jacqueline Carey, and R. Scott Bakker, to name a few.

This is my first Goodreads group so still learning the ropes.
I'm Masha, I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I'm an artist and writer but to pay the rent, I teach. I've been a fantasy addict all my life but I'm also a book slut and read just about anything.
I tend to prefer books that dont fall solidly in any particular genre - like Tim Powers, for example. Some other favourites are Dianna Wynne Jones, Margaret Mahy, Charles de Lint, Phillip Pullman and Steve Augarde .
Looking forward to some great discussions and discovering new writers :)

I'm new to GoodReads -- although I've got the hang of Bookswap already =D -- and this is the first book club I've joined. I enjoy reading all kinds of books, but fantasy is my favorite genre, and I'd love to find more quality adult fantasy to read.
I did read the EarthSea Cycle books about 20 years ago, and am planning to read them again. I saw your book for July was A Wizard of EarthSea - "Sold!" I joined the group right then & there.

Welcome. All of you new folks who are authors, please read the author guidelines that Goodreads has posted.

Now I'm writing a fantasy-appreciation blog. Message me if you have an idea why fantasy is so captivating and resonate, despite being, by definition, impossible.

Anyway, I'm from the SF Bay area (Sunnyvale too, Jeanne) and have recently become a 1st time mom. That's made reading a lil slower but that might be good because I'd gotten into the habit of reading any dribble that hit my hands. Now, I'll just be more selective!
As a huge fantasy reader, I'm always looking for the next great undiscovered series... there are a lot since I have only begun to get back to reading a lot since I hit my 30s.
Any recommendations?

I am currently reading Game of Thrones by Geroge RR Martin and I like it so far. I saw the tv show and like it so now I'm reading the book. Is the rest of the series good too, anyone know?

Welcome. I think most people would say it is very good, and I agree. However, I have not continued past book two because of minuscule forward motion of the plot compared to the introduction of new characters. Also, it took GRRM 5 years to produce a sequel to #4 and I'm not sure I'll live long enough to get to the finale, :D.

Susan, it would help if we knew something about what books you liked, so the recommendations would fit.

My name is Chase, I live in Las Vegas, and work for my family and go to school for psychology. I've been into fantasy for awhile, starting with the bad (Ole' Drizzt and Mr. Goodkind) and finally working into the good (Sanderson, Hobb, Abercrombie, ect..) So hope to stick with this, seems pretty cool.
hey everyone my names Jason. i live within the uk and at currently have to much time to read.

I'm Nigel. I am a paediatric nurse in Dunedin New Zealand. I have been a fantasy/SF reader for 30 years and have a list of favourite authors so long I have started to forget them. Currently I am rereading Sharon Green's Blending series, which I love. It is nice to be part of a group that appreciates and discusses books.

I've loved fantasy ever since I read the Hobbit in the 7th grade, though I'll read thrillers or an occasional romance when I'm in the mood for something different. My top three favorite authors are Robert Jordan, George R R Martin, and Charles de Lint. Right now, I'm taking a small break from fantasy for some Alice Hoffman, but I've got a couple books by Guy Gavriel Kay waiting for me when I'm done. :)

Welcome to everyone new! Have you looked into reading anything by R.Scott Bakker? He is the author of The Prince of Nothing trilogy and The Aspect-Emperor trilogy as well. He is incredible!

Elle
Welcome, Elle. How exciting being a short story fantasy writer!

Michael McClung here, reader and writer. Happy to be part of a group with a passion for fantasy. Originally from the US, I now live in Singapore, where there aren't all that many people to chat with about such matters :)

I'm Linda from Finland and I'm new to both Goodreads and this group. I study both Finnish Literature and Comparative Literature in Helsinki University. This year I finally wrote my Bachelor's Thesis - about a fantasy novel of course. I focused on use of myths and mythology in fantasy, and studied how using such material helped creating the secondary world.
I've been an avid reader of fantasy for nearly ten years now, and besides literature I'm also very fond of fantasy art, movies and RPG's. My favorite authors are Robin Hobb, Marion Zimmer Bradley and J.R.R. Tolkien. At the moment I'm reading "The Tombs of Atuan" by Ursula K. Le Guin and the more I read, the more I love it. I know there are many amazing writers whose work has not been translated into my native language, and I'm eager to discover new books - I hope this group is a good place to start my exploration!

I love Fantasy and my favorite authors are:
Robert Jordan
Brandon Sanderson
J.R.R. Tolkien
George R.R. Martin
Trudi Canavan
David Eddings
My favorite Fantasy serie is "Wheel of time".

Hi, Daniele, and congrats for figuring out the 'add book/author' gizmo!
Welcome one and all. All you writers, please read the Goodreads author guidelines. Link provided in post #1567 above.

I have a day job as an environmental consultant, but I try to spend equal time writing. I write both Epic and YA Urban fantasy, but I'm all over the place with what I read.
I use my Kindle to sample a wide variety of self-published works and novels by mainstream publishers. They are so different, with one being more creative while the other is more polished. It's hard to say which type I like better. I just enjoy good fantasy, wherever I find it.

Thank you! ;)
The 'add book/author' gizmo is helpful tool.

Any particular books or mythologies?

I'm currently trying to expand my library to include more than just fantasy, but nothing excites me quite like a fantasy book! I'm excited by this book club and I can't wait to discover new books with you all :)
