Shannon Enriquez (shanenri) Hello, I'm Shannon from North Carolina! I'm a stay-at-home mom/housewife. Married for almost 20 years with 2 kids! I love books of any kind but prefer fantasy!

message 1502: by Peter (new)

Peter Smith I'm Peter, from Nova Scotia, Canada. Been reading sci-fi and fantasy since I was a kid, probably starting with A Wrinkle in Time. At least thats my first recollection. I tend to read lighter fantasy (Pratchett) as its a nice escape, but still enjoy re-reading LOTR and Shannara as well.

message 1503: by [deleted user] (new)

I live in Ontario, Canada and my son introduced me to the fantasy genre, and I am now hooked. I like Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Jacqueline Carey, and R. Scott Bakker, to name a few.

message 1504: by Alison (new)

Alison DeLuca Hello! I'ma stay at home mom and a writer. I love steampunk and urban fantasy. My first fantasy book was The Hobbit, and I haven't looked back since.

message 1505: by Masha (new)

Masha Toit Hi everyone :)
This is my first Goodreads group so still learning the ropes.

I'm Masha, I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I'm an artist and writer but to pay the rent, I teach. I've been a fantasy addict all my life but I'm also a book slut and read just about anything.

I tend to prefer books that dont fall solidly in any particular genre - like Tim Powers, for example. Some other favourites are Dianna Wynne Jones, Margaret Mahy, Charles de Lint, Phillip Pullman and Steve Augarde .

Looking forward to some great discussions and discovering new writers :)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments Welcome to the group Masha, Alison, Heather, Peter, Shannon and all the others who have recently joined us this month. Welcome to Fantasy Island, er, or is that Fantasy Book Club. :)

John Beachem | 373 comments Wow, welcome to all the new folks. People are joining fast and furious these days.

message 1508: by Isabelle (new)

Isabelle (iziezi) Hello!
I'm new to GoodReads -- although I've got the hang of Bookswap already =D -- and this is the first book club I've joined. I enjoy reading all kinds of books, but fantasy is my favorite genre, and I'd love to find more quality adult fantasy to read.

I did read the EarthSea Cycle books about 20 years ago, and am planning to read them again. I saw your book for July was A Wizard of EarthSea - "Sold!" I joined the group right then & there.

message 1510: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Walker (Jordan739) Hello, my name is Jordan. I'm an avid reader and as of yet I still haven't finished my 'read' list on the profile page...there are so many to list lol. My favorite authors however include Robin Hobbs, Brent Weeks and newly added to the list Melissa Myers though she is a new author and indie at that. I look forward to finding more favorites from suggestions on this list.

message 1511: by Kari (new)

Kari Hello, I'm Kari and joined Goodreads a few days ago and fell in love with the site. I had a family member recommend me to it since I'm a huge bookworm haha. I live in Washington State and love The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books.

message 1512: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (_shannon) Hi All, I'm Shannon and I'm a long time fantasy fan. A few of my favourite authors are George RR Martin, Steven Erikson and Robert Jordan.

message 1514: by M.J. (new)

M.J. Webb (mjwebb) Hi everyone - My name is Martin and I'm a full time worker and dad who writes in what little spare time he has and published a book last year which has been relatively successful and will be followed by the sequel in a few months time. I'm reading The Name of the Wind at present on the advice of members here but have to admit to being slightly disappointed by it (probably because it received such glowing rec's). As a back up I have hyddenworld by William Horwood which was bought as a present for me. I'd love any feedback at all on my own novel but also any recommendations as I like fast moving storylines and action. Best wishes.

Welcome. All of you new folks who are authors, please read the author guidelines that Goodreads has posted.

message 1516: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Walker (Jordan739) I'd like to edit my intro with an apology to the group. I have apparently been too enthusiastic about the most recent book I've read. I hadn't intended to be a 'Sock Puppet' and that wasn't why I joined the group. I was simply posting about the most recent book in my mind. I will refrain from posting about books myself and look forward to simply adding my comments on the books that are listed.

~Jordan

message 1517: by A.E. (new)

A.E. Marling (aemarling) My name is Alan. I've enjoyed fantasy for over twenty years. In fact, I learned to read by playing a text-intensive fantasy RPG.

Now I'm writing a fantasy-appreciation blog. Message me if you have an idea why fantasy is so captivating and resonate, despite being, by definition, impossible.

message 1518: by CuriousSusan (new)

CuriousSusan D (curiousd) Hello everyone! My name is Susan and I have just discovered goodreads. Well, I found it several hours ago and I'm still here - looking for my favorite books and discovering new ones! I have a feeling this site will be addicting.

Anyway, I'm from the SF Bay area (Sunnyvale too, Jeanne) and have recently become a 1st time mom. That's made reading a lil slower but that might be good because I'd gotten into the habit of reading any dribble that hit my hands. Now, I'll just be more selective!

As a huge fantasy reader, I'm always looking for the next great undiscovered series... there are a lot since I have only begun to get back to reading a lot since I hit my 30s.

Any recommendations?

message 1520: by PenelopeThree (new)

PenelopeThree Hi. I'm Penelope. I have been a memeber here for a long time but i never posted yet before today. This group is so big and busy but i'm trying to be less shy so maybe I will talk about books with you.

I am currently reading Game of Thrones by Geroge RR Martin and I like it so far. I saw the tv show and like it so now I'm reading the book. Is the rest of the series good too, anyone know?

Welcome. I think most people would say it is very good, and I agree. However, I have not continued past book two because of minuscule forward motion of the plot compared to the introduction of new characters. Also, it took GRRM 5 years to produce a sequel to #4 and I'm not sure I'll live long enough to get to the finale, :D.

message 1522: by John (new)

John I'm new here. I love most forms of fantasy, but it must be well written. I am a huge fan of mythology as well. I live in Austin, Texas and am a musician by trade

message 1526: by Chase (new)

Chase Hey everyone, I just stumbled upon this website through google, and have always wanted to discuss books and fantasy with others, so thought this might be a good start.

My name is Chase, I live in Las Vegas, and work for my family and go to school for psychology. I've been into fantasy for awhile, starting with the bad (Ole' Drizzt and Mr. Goodkind) and finally working into the good (Sanderson, Hobb, Abercrombie, ect..) So hope to stick with this, seems pretty cool.

Nigel | 10 comments Hi,

I'm Nigel. I am a paediatric nurse in Dunedin New Zealand. I have been a fantasy/SF reader for 30 years and have a list of favourite authors so long I have started to forget them. Currently I am rereading Sharon Green's Blending series, which I love. It is nice to be part of a group that appreciates and discusses books.

message 1534: by Dana (new)

Dana Hi everyone! My name is Dana, and I discovered Goodreads about a month ago. I'm in Virginia, and work part time, but mostly I'm a mom to two little ones.

I've loved fantasy ever since I read the Hobbit in the 7th grade, though I'll read thrillers or an occasional romance when I'm in the mood for something different. My top three favorite authors are Robert Jordan, George R R Martin, and Charles de Lint. Right now, I'm taking a small break from fantasy for some Alice Hoffman, but I've got a couple books by Guy Gavriel Kay waiting for me when I'm done. :)

message 1535: by John (new)

John Beachem | 373 comments Hi Dana, glad to have you here. Any other fantasy authors you've enjoyed?

message 1536: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn | 44 comments Hello. I am Marilyn from New York, just turned 55. I do bookeeping on a per diem basis. Previously read historical fiction and murder mysteries but due to a nagging college aged daughter, I gave fantasy a try and found that I loved it. So far, my favorite fantasy author is Robin Hobb.

message 1537: by John (new)

John Beachem | 373 comments Hi Marilyn, welcome to the group. Glad you discovered the genre :-)

message 1538: by Madalyn (last edited Aug 21, 2011 06:54PM) (new)

Madalyn (madalynreads) Hi everyone! I'm Madalyn, from Michigan. I'm a history major at Eastern Michigan University. I read just about everything I can get my hands on. Fantasy is probably my favorite genre though. I read a lot of Terry Goodkind, I just started reading George R.R. Martin, and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time Series. I love the bookclubs on GoodReads because it has introduced me to a lot of books and authors that I probably wouldn't have picked up at the bookstore!

message 1539: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to everyone new! Have you looked into reading anything by R.Scott Bakker? He is the author of The Prince of Nothing trilogy and The Aspect-Emperor trilogy as well. He is incredible!

Michael McClung (michaelmcclung) Greetings and Salutations!

Michael McClung here, reader and writer. Happy to be part of a group with a passion for fantasy. Originally from the US, I now live in Singapore, where there aren't all that many people to chat with about such matters :)

message 1544: by Linda (new)

Linda Kindt (Iribel) Hello everyone!

I'm Linda from Finland and I'm new to both Goodreads and this group. I study both Finnish Literature and Comparative Literature in Helsinki University. This year I finally wrote my Bachelor's Thesis - about a fantasy novel of course. I focused on use of myths and mythology in fantasy, and studied how using such material helped creating the secondary world.
I've been an avid reader of fantasy for nearly ten years now, and besides literature I'm also very fond of fantasy art, movies and RPG's. My favorite authors are Robin Hobb, Marion Zimmer Bradley and J.R.R. Tolkien. At the moment I'm reading "The Tombs of Atuan" by Ursula K. Le Guin and the more I read, the more I love it. I know there are many amazing writers whose work has not been translated into my native language, and I'm eager to discover new books - I hope this group is a good place to start my exploration!

Hi, Daniele, and congrats for figuring out the 'add book/author' gizmo!

Welcome one and all. All you writers, please read the Goodreads author guidelines. Link provided in post #1567 above.

message 1547: by R.L. (new)

R.L. Austin Fantasy Book Club sounded like a group I could relate to. My name is R.L. Austin and I live in Florida.

I have a day job as an environmental consultant, but I try to spend equal time writing. I write both Epic and YA Urban fantasy, but I'm all over the place with what I read.

I use my Kindle to sample a wide variety of self-published works and novels by mainstream publishers. They are so different, with one being more creative while the other is more polished. It's hard to say which type I like better. I just enjoy good fantasy, wherever I find it.

message 1550: by Eden (new)

Eden Daintree (eden_daintree) Hey everyone! My name is Eden, and I'm addicted to fantasy. Excluding Harry Potter and other childhood books, my first fantasy novel was Abarat by Clive Barker. I then discovered Robin Hobb, and I worship every single book set in the Farseer world she created. I've recently devoured Jennifer Fallon's Tide Lord Series, and I thought it was fabulous (except for the absurd ending).

I'm currently trying to expand my library to include more than just fantasy, but nothing excites me quite like a fantasy book! I'm excited by this book club and I can't wait to discover new books with you all :)
