or, more commonly known as Joël.
I was born, and still live in the Netherlands.
Most people know me to be a creative tomboy,
and at least a bit weird.
I love to make my own clothing and I'm quite dedicated to capoeria.
I absolutely can't do without reading fantasy.
Every day I just have to read fantasy for at least 10 minutes.
My day isn't complete without it.
As for some favorite authors:
Peter Schaap
Robert Jordan
Terry Pratchett
Neil Gaiman
Robin Hobb
George RR Martin
Lastly, I joined this group to get recommendations, for what books I could/should read.
Because sadly most fantasy reading, real life friends recommend books I don't like.
Well that's it for now!

Please vote in our May book Poll to help us choose what to read after Daughter of the Forest in April!

Hi Joel, and Welcome to the Club. We have lots of fun, read mostly great fantasy novels, and lively discussions. Since you asked for recemmendations, i must mention my favorite author (who is also a Goodreads author, in this club).
We have read several books by Janny Wurts. Her writing is markedly different (her characters actually change over time, sometimes drastically, for instance), as are her themes (compassion, not revenge. etc.).
For a stand-alone, I loved To Ride Hells' Chasm. Her Great Work is the long series, The Wars of Light and Shadow.
Again, Welcome!

I've been reading Fantasy ever since I was forced to stop reading Harry Potter. My mother took my books away from me because I'd read the whole series [4 of them at that time] over 10 times.
I picked up some David Eddings [I was 10] and have been stuck ever since.
However the issue is I've just started Uni, and this is taking up a lot of my time, and I just can't seem to find time to read anymore :(
Anyway, I decided to join this group to discuss some favourite books of mine, and to find some different things to read.

Thank you for your recommendation.
Up till now I haven't read anything from her,
and read mostly very good reviews and such about her work.
I've become very curious,
so I'll be sure to check it out!

I'm Jasmine.. from iraq
i started reading to enhance my english, but then it became an obbsession, a few months ago i purchsed a Sony e-book reader and that gave me a great aportunity to read the books i download from the internet... i have quntless of books and very little time to read them all, and my TBR list is growing and growing
my favorite writers now are Maria V. Snyder, Kelly Armstrong, Terry Goodkind, Stephen king and Stephanie Meyers
my favorite books are too many i won't list them here
looking forward to join the group's reads and discussions

I'm new to the group though I've been a member of goodreads for a bit. I just haven't been very busy around here, though I am trying to change that a bit. So I'm starting by joining some groups and saying hello.
I'm Rita, a 29 years old fantasy fan from Portugal. I started reading in this genre when I was around 16/17 with the Dragonlance series, at the time some of the very few fantasy books translated to Portuguese. I have read quite a bit of fantasy - it's my favorite genre - but I have even more in my to be read mountain, including a lot of the genre's classics. I'm hoping to slowly but surely get to all of those.
As for favorite authors, here are a few that I love:
George R.R. Martin
Guy Gavriel Kay
J.K. Rowling
J.R.R. Tolkien
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Neil Gaiman
Patricia A. McKillip
Robin Hobb
Terry Pratchett
And a few authors from whom I've only read one book but that have impressed me a lot, and I want to keep reading their series/works:
Jacqueline Carey
Joe Abercrombie
Patrick Rothfuss
Scott Lynch
Steven Erikson
Also, I have a lot of other people's favorite authors on my to be read list. I hope I'll read them one day.

My favorite authors are:
Neil Gaiman
George R.R. Martin
J.K. Rowling
Terry Pratchett
J.R.R. Tolkien
I will read just about anything, giving every author a chance so I love recommendations!
Hi all - I'm an author from England who just loves fantasy so much I wrote my own. Love all the conventional stuff as well as checking out the self published authors on lesser known sites. Looking forward to getting insight into the minds of my target readers and seeing what is popular etc. Also Hoping for some feedback on my own work. Best wishes.

Will do - thank you.
Will do - thank you.

I believe my first encounter with fantasy was when my mom read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to me and my younger brother when I was 8 or so. I was an early reader so I kept on trying to read ahead of her so I could find out what happened next.
I am 40 now with two degrees in English so it's been a long haul! When it comes to fantasy, some of my favorite authors are: Steven Erikson, Steven Brust, Lord Dunsany, Ursula K. Le Guin, Ellen Kushner, Robert Holdstock, Patricia McKillip, Poul Anderson, C.J. Cherryh, Jo Clayton, Greg Bear, Sharon Shinn, William Morris, and (last but not least) Greer Gilman.
Whew! Anyways, I look forward to sharing with you.
EDIT: added colon for clarity. :)

Hi all! I'm Brondt. I've just joined the group and wanted to introduce myself. I became a fantasy addict when the Lord of the Rings movies were hot. Since then, I haven't been able to get enough. I even started writing fantasy at the time and have finally started publishing. My favourite authors include Tolkien, Sanderson, Feist, Brooks, and Donaldson. I like a mixture of the classical fantasy stories and the edgier new stuff, though I'm not completely sold on Abercromie, Lynch, or Martin. I look forward to joining some of the great discussions in this group.

my name is Eko Prasetyo, from Indonesia. My first fantasy book, I think, is Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks. I have been addicted to Terry Brooks works every since, eating almost all of his works, and love Sword and First King of Shannara most.
My kind of fantasy is the one that is epic, sentient, good-sided beings versus epic malevolent forces, LOTR style.
I also love Sci-fi, especially the ones that are epic. Currently reading Dune series.
Well, I guess that's it. Love to get some new fantasy-loving friends here.
Anyway, If I may, I also have a wattpad account with the name of Zenstrive. (wattpad is not hated around here, right?)

Eko, never heard of Wattpad. What is it?"
wattpad.com, where amateurs and professionals write things :)

Hi, I'm Heather from Brighton in the UK. I am currently on Book 4 of The Wheel of Time Series which I love! I am also a big Pratchett fan and I love Harry Potter! I also really enjoyed the Liveship traders series by Robin Hobb.
Look forward to chatting with you!

I'm happy to find such a great group on Goodreads. I'm an avid reader of fantasy and Sci-fi. My absolute favorites are:
-George RR Martin- Song of Ice and Fire
-LOTR
-Neal Stephenson
-Also really like Erikson's Malazan Empire, but got a bit too bogged down feeling from reading them and have taken a break after 2.
-Like Wheel of time, read about 8 books, but got tired of the sort of formulaic way the characters act/interact
I'm really enjoying China Mieville's work. Currently I'm reading Kraken, but so far I enjoyed Perdido St. and The Scar more than this one.

Zach
P.S. I look forward to many interesting conversations and discussions with yall in the future! ;)

I'm Emily. From Cornwall in the UK. To be honest i just love books it doesn't really matter about the genre. But seeing as i do read quite a bit of fantasy i thought i would join up and start piling up the fantasy 'to-read' list. And seeing as there are lots of different books even in this thread i'm sure my list will be huge in no time.
=)
Hi folks, I'm Dex from Bradford. I generally read fantasy or crime thrillers and I've been really interested in reading the posts and recommendations on here and other fantasy groups. Books I've read recently that I would endorse include:
No Time for Goodbye
The Shadow of the Wind
Switched
Jake West: The Keeper of the Stones
No Time for Goodbye

While I was abroad I did some writing as well, which I am preparing to publish in e-book format. I have no idea how long that will take -- the great disadvantage of having no agent, editor, or publisher is lacking the authority above who tells one when to stop revising -- but I hope that when my first book is complete, some of the people on this forum will be willing to read it and give me their feedback. The world has changed quite a bit in the last decade, but I think I like the shift towards participatory publishing -- my coming to Goodreads is my first look at it, and I would like to thank the longtime regulars here for creating and maintaining this platform for book lovers. I look forward very much to future discussions here.
Simon

Simon, be sure to read the rules for authors. We welcome writers here, but only allow posts promoting your own work in the 'Group Authors' folder. Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up -- I did read those and hope I can do so without being annoying . . . Alas, I have no work to promote yet, hopefully soon.
