Carrie (Care) (care76) | 55 comments My favourite UF series is Night Huntress, but it is definitely on the romance side. But it is not PNR. They each have a great plot with a lot of great action sequences and usually one heavy sex scene in each book. So it's not like the books are all romance. I also love the Kate Daniels series, which I would say is closer to the Dresden Files, but from a woman's perspective.

I have actually only heard of the Nightside series (I think) out of the ones you have posted. I will have to look them up.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I have the first Ilona Andrews book on my shelf among my myriad "to be read" books... They look good, hopefully I'll get to them fairly soon. LOL

Books-treasureortrash (bookstreasureortrash) Hi,

I love to read and to write about what I have read. My favourite series is Wheel of Time and I am looking forward to reading Towers of Midnight. I also enjoy reading UF, I really like the Dresden Files amoung others. I have also read all of Terry Brooks books. I am looking forward to picking up new ideas of books and series to read from this forum.

stormhawk Hello, I'm stormhawk. I have an unusual job and because of it can't use my birthname online. I do not work for the CIA or any other governmental entity ... I'm not THAT cool.

I just can't have my work follow me home.

I started out as a science fiction fan (Star Trek in early childhood does that to a person), and eventually started wondering what those books on the other side of the section were about.

I do not like LOTR. Hate it in fact. I have reread it several times, just to be sure.

I was very upset when my perfectly lovely fantasy about Pern's dragons turned into a Science Fiction series (ditto for Darkover!)

message 1155: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Evensen Hey all, my name is Brandon from La Canada, California. I am a student at Pasadena City College and right now I'm hooked on Towers of Midnight. I usually read fantasy, but sometimes throw in some history or sci/fi. My favorite authors are Robert Jordan, Steven Erikson, and George R.R. Martin. Just introducing myself, I'll be back for the new book in December and definitely try to peek in at the Brandon Sanderson Q/A.

message 1156: by Julie (new)

Julie Stormhawk, good idea, I wish that I had thought of not using my birthname online. Big brother and all that...*grin*

Jess Hello folks, I'm Jessica. I currently live in Hawaii. But in around a week or so I'm going on deployment (I'm in the navy). My father got me a kindle for my birthday last year, shortly AFTER a deployment.

This time I'm preparing, and with the kindle it should be a cinch to continue reading.

I've been a sucker for fantasy forever, and have a secret shame for adoring stories where the main protaganist is a butt kicking female. It's a left over from my childhood when I wanted to be a sword wielding pirate/ninja/soldier/warrior when I grew up :)

I don't have much time left, but I'm planning on scouring the group to see what books have good reviews. And then during deployment I can still access the site :)

message 1158: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments God bless.
Enjoy your stories and don't be ashamed of books you like! Have you read The Deed of Paksenarrion? The story of a young woman who wants to be a warrior? It follows her development through 3 books from her training to becoming a paladin. One of my favorites ( The Deed of Paksenarrion, is the omnibus edition, contains, Sheepfarmer's Daughter, Divided Allegiance) and Oath of Gold.

The Green Rider (Green Rider) series is also a fantasy about a strong female lead.

Again, God bless, be safe, and good luck on your deployment.

Welcome, and GOOD LUCK while deployed. What a gift your father gave you! I can imagine how much reading will be a comfort for you. Will look forward to your posts.

Janny (jannywurts) | 807 comments Jessica, check out The Paladin, seems right up your alley.

And stay safe, wherever you go.

message 1161: by Rrragan (new)

Rrragan Jessica, you might try Kelly Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series. "Bitten" is the first book of the series. They are Werewolf sort of stories if you don't mind those. She also has a separate series involving witches/demons etc and there is a bit of crossover in the two series. I have her latest on the shelf at home in the TBR pile.

The Red Wolf Conspiracy, and its sequel The Ruling Sea. Very unusual female warrior heroine(s)

Sarah (sarahbeth46) Hi everyone!
My name is Sarah and I'm from NJ. I have read, and enjoyed, a few fantasy books and am looking forward to learning about new authors to check out.

message 1166: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Broadwell (nikkibroadwell) I am new to this site. I live in Portland, Oregon, am a writer as well as a reader and have just completed a fantasy novel--(although the editing continues endlessly!) I truly hope to get it published this next year! and barring that I will self-publish since it is a good story! I am interested in how you went about this, Sarah, since I may be doing the same very soon.
I am overwhelmed by the amount of books here that I have not read or even heard of! I have picky taste and look forward to trying out some of the books that are being talked about--we have a fabulous bookstore here where one can purchase used as well as new...(Powell's City of Books)

message 1167: by Brandon (new)

Brandon (betes) My name's Brandon.

I live in Kansas City and I work in the healthcare field. I spend a LOT of my free time reading, almost all of it fantasy. I enjoy some other types of books, but far and away I read more fantasy than anything else.

My favorite authors include:

Tad Williams
Tolkien
Greg Keyes
George RR
Terry Brooks

I started reading fantasy in middle school with Brian Jacques' Redwall books. After that I read the Shannara books, which really got me into the genre. Elfstones of Shannara is still one of the best IMO. After that was Dragonlance, the Death Gate Cycle, LOTR, The Hobbit, Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, and many others.

I just started reading The Summer Tree and so far I am loving it. It's been recommended to me several times and I feel stupid for not reading it sooner.

Anyway, I hope to join in on some of the great discussions on this site.

message 1168: by Rob (last edited Dec 02, 2010 10:48AM) (new)

Rob (tor60) Hi my name is Robyn, and I'm from Toronto. I joined Goodreads a while ago but recently tweaked to the Fantasy Book Club group.

Like many others here, I am sure, I first discovered the magic that comes from reading Fantasy novels when I read the Hobbit in grade 9. Once I had discovered Tolkien I poured through LOTR, Silmarillion, any companion novels I could find. After, having fully immersed myself into Tolkien, I began to branch out to any other authors I could discover in the small town library where I grew up.
Today, though I love to read many different genres and always have a book in my bag and another on the go on my Ipod I always find my way back to Fantasy books.

My favorite Authors are:

Tolkien (Can anyone be a fan of this genre and not love Tolkien)
David Eddings
George RR Martin (would he please just finish the next Fire and Ice book!!)
Ursala Le Guin
Michael Moorcock
Anne McCaffery

I'm looking forward to participating in the discussions, meeting some new friends, and discovering new and exciting authors.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) Hi everyone, new member here. I've been a long time fan of fantasy. Unlike everyone else Tolkien was not my first introduction into the realm. Instead, Patricia C Wredes Magic Forest Series stole my heart, and I've been obsessed with the genre ever since.

Lately I've been more into the sub-genre Urban Fantasy (actually my UF collection surpasses my Epic Fantasy collection). Because of that I've been looking into getting in touch with my Epic Fantasy side. Looking forward to chatting with all of you.

Here are some of my favorite Epic Fantasy books:

Song in the Silence (The Tale of Lanen Kaelar) by Elizabeth Kerner The Enchanted Forest Chronicles Dealing with Dragons / Searching for Dragons / Calling on Dragons / Talking to Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede The Witches of Eileanan (The Witches of Eileanan, #1) by Kate Forsyth The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan The Wayfarer Redemption (Wayfarer Redemption, #1) by Sara Douglass Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 55 comments Yay Shera! *Waves*

After I thought about it, The Hobbit wasn't the first fantasy book I really fell in love with. It was The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. I was obsessed when I was very young. :P

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) Tolkien was something I wasn't shown until after I first watched The Fellowship.

message 1172: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi from France everyone!
Been a fantasy-addict since I was a little girl... Must be the "Neverending Story" effect or something. Anyway, later came Tolkien, and I was doomed. Now, after Marion Zimmer Bradley, Guy Gavriel Kay, Léa Silhol, David Gemmel, Robin Hobb and all the others, it seems I'm stuck for good in the Mythagos Wood... and it's overcrowded. Who are you people?!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) *Waves back*

Took me a moment, but it's going to be awesome being in another group with you! ^_-

B. Throwsnaill (bthrowsnaill) Hi,
I live outside of Philadelphia, PA, USA, and am a part-time writer. I have recently written and published a fantasy ebook. My other life is that of an office drone, with a specialization in information technology.
I tend to read sci-fi and fantasy, with an occasional new age or religious book thrown into the mix for good measure. My favorite authors are Frank Herbert, Tolkien, Michael Moorcock and William Gibson.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) Welcome to the group B.

Hi everyone, greetings from the East Coast of the USA. My first memories of reading fantasy are the Narnia books when I was about tween age, then as a teen I read lots by Stephen King. Some of my favorite authors now are Tolkien, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Scott Westerfeld. Right now I'm on the third book of Stephen King's Dark Towers series.

message 1185: by Robert (new)

Robert (dimndbangr) | 17 comments My name is Robert and I am currently stationed in Hawaii with my next assignment going to San Antonio, TX. I started out reading Stephen King and one of my friends liked to read Dragonlance. Later he and my younger brother were talking about The Darksword Trilogy by Weiss and Hickman and I gave it a try. As the horror genre seemed to go nowhere except for King, I decided to try my hand at more fantasy and am now hooked on the Forgotten Realms, which I finally am caught up with that entire series and am now branching out to other fantasy novels.

Favorite authors, in no certain order are:

Stephen King
Michael J. Sullivan
Weiss and Hickman
R.A. Salvatore
Brent Weeks
Erik Scott de Bie
Rosemary Jones

message 1188: by J. (new)

J. (autumnalstories) I like to go by Kite online and some say it fits my nature.

It's been a while since I was an advid reader and I want to get back into it since I got a BN Nook and no longer have to worry about shelf space or loosing half my collection upon moving. I started with the Inheritance Cycle since it was suggested by a close friend - and I LOVED IT. God, I miss fantasy and a little sci fi.

So I'm here to get the dish on some new books and to hear what people have to say about them. I just don't have enough people in my life who read the same genres.

J. (autumnalstories) Carrie (Care) wrote: "Hi Kite! There are lots of ideas here, your TBR list will be huge in no time. ;)"

Thanks Carrie - I've actually read quite a lot, but I don't know where to begin filling all those in! I might start fleshing out what I've read, but right now I'm just trying to keep up with what I'm reading. Do you believe I've had A Game of Thrones on my shelf, half-read, for 8 years or so? FINALLY found it again and decided to finish it.

I'm really looking forward to the comments because I find it so hard to find the good reads - literally. I would have never picked up Eragon if not for a friend insisting that its one of the best new works of fantasy - and NOTHING like the movie.

message 1191: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 55 comments It is hard to remember what you have read from years ago. There are tons of books where I can't remember the titles or the characters names, but I remember small parts of the plot... When I said TBR list I meant the To Be Read shelf here at goodreads. I keep finding so many books I want to read and adding them, and now my list is so huge I have rules for myself on adding new books to that shelf, lol.

8 years, wow. I get it though, I had to force myself not to give up on A Game of Thrones. I liked Eragon, but I haven't read the third because I was trying to wait for the last book to come out. It has been years (before the movie) since I read it, so I will probably re-read them all before.

message 1192: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Hi Kite. One thing there's no shortage of here is people who have book recommendations for you! Look over the reviews I'm sure like the rest of us in no time you'll have a list far too long for you to ever finish! LOL.

message 1193: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Hello to Robert and Kite and anyone else I may have missed! Hope you will find as much interesting stuff here as I have in the last year.

I've had to try and make rules for myself! I also got a Nook and the ebooks are so easy to buy it's hard to resist temptation.

message 1194: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andreakhost) Hi, I'm Andrea (from Sydney, Aus). I have a particular love for secondary-world fantasies (and for silver age mysteries!), but also like science fiction (especially Andre Norton and Melissa Scott, who I wish would write more). My favourite writers are Diana Wynne Jones, Robin McKinley and Ngaio Marsh.

message 1195: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Hi, Andrea from Sydney! Welcome to FBC. I'm sure you'll find a lot of like minded folks here. I don't know what you're talking about, but hopefully others do. I'm a little new to fantasy and am busy catching up.

message 1196: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (andreakhost) Secondary world fantasy just means it's not set in our world. Also called high fantasy. [Epic fantasy is also generally secondary world, but I'm not so much into the ten big volumes fantasy...] Unlike Urban fantasy which is not only set in our world, but usually around our time (though I guess it would be possible to write secondary world urban fantasy :) .

Silver age mysteries (also called golden age mysteries) are mystery novels written from around the 1920's to the 1950s - Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, etc.

I have an entire shelf dedicated to Andre Norton - she has such a unique voice. "Catseye" is one of my favourite re-reads.

message 1198: by Selenia (new)

Selenia Hi, I'm Bekah and am a reading addict. I read about 2 books a week (depending on length) and have hundreds on my TBR list. My favorite genres are fantasy and sci-fi; don't really have any favorite authors because there are so many great books out there

message 1199: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi all, I'm Stephen. I have been part of this group for a while, but never got around to doing the whole introduction thing. I live in Oklahoma, I teach biology, and I have a thing for fantasy. Now, I am not the avid fantasy read as some on here. I find that the times in my life when I read a lot are spread out, but recently I have found my way back to books. I really do not stray much from fantasy, but have read a few other genres.

My favorite authors are:
TOLKIEN J.R.R.
WEIS & HICKMAN
Gaiman Neil
BARKER CLIVE
George R.R. Martin

Some of my favorite books and or series include:
The Lord of the Rings
Abarat
The Amulet of Samarkand
A Game of Thrones

I look forward to reading many of the titles I find here. I think my next reads are gonna have to be from Sanderson Brandon, because I hear so much about his books. Thanks all.

message 1200: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) Hi there! I'm Chelsea, and I'm new.

I love books. I'm surrounded by them right now, and I just got fourteen new books for Christmas.

I am and always will be a Tolkien fiend at heart. I actually only read the books after I completed a concentration in Medieval studies at UC Irvine. I was really impressed with how many similarities I could draw between them.

If you want to know the kinds of books and authors I like, check out my Read list.

I've got two cats, Linus and Pippin, and I'm married to a wonderful woman who reads too, but he's more into travel literature. I live in Long Beach, CA. I play the saxophone and guitar, I cook, and I'm an amateur writer.

Hello everyone!
