Claire Kinton (clairekinton) | 10 comments Hi guys, I am Claire Kinton, author of DEAD GAME and WAITING GAME. I just thought I’d start a thread about my work and what I do.

Firstly I am a mother to three gorgeous children, boy – girl - boy, my eldest being eight and my youngest being four. My patience has certainly been tested with them but likewise they have taught me how to play again and with all their cheeky smiles my life is full! I am also a reflexologist and have been for the past fifteen years.

I have always written as a way of therapy and those who know me know that generally I do live in my own little fairytale bubble – it’s an awesome place to be, at times. I was inspired to write Dead Game following the death of my cousin, who served in Iraq, with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. I found writing my way of coping with my bereavement. After eight years of living by an RAF camp with my husband Gareth, I have forged close friendships with families whose young men and women risk - and all too often lose - their lives serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Witnessing at first hand the heartbreak of loss that conjures a multitude of emotions, particularly in children and young adults, spurred me on to complete Dead Game; answering poignant questions in a fantastical way. It was not initially written with the plan to publish, but after my husband entered it into the inaugural Brit Writers Awards back in 2010 and it was shortlisted, my confidence in my writing and my story grew.

I self published DEAD GAME in Oct 2010 and at the beginning of this month, January 2012, after a year of intense mentoring on the Brit Writers Publishing Programme, I was approached by a publisher who has offered me a two book, book deal, incorporating DEAD GAME and the sequel WAITING GAME! So, as you can imagine my head is a bit fuzzy at the moment to say the least. I’m nervous, terrified and excited all at the same time, because as you can see it is a very personal story, it came from my heart and is very precious to me. The first edition of DEAD GAME, of which there are only forty copies left, is 100% ALL me, from the front cover down to the photo of me, which my youngest son took back when he was just two! It’s going to be really hard to let go and hand it over to someone else but at the same time it is a dream come true! The re-release of DEAD GAME will happen in April 2012, with WAITING GAME launching nearer the end of 2012.

I’m also an avid fundraiser. I am running the Virgin London Marathon 2012 in aid of Dyslexia Action a cause very dear to my heart. If you’d like to know why please visit... http://www.justgiving.com/Claire-Kinton My debut novel DEAD GAME also supports SSAFA Forces Help, one of the smaller forces charities, under the umbrella of Help for Heroes. I give a percentage of anything I make from DEAD GAME to SSAFA Forces Help, not to bribe people into buying DEAD GAME, as unbelievably one person has accused, but as a personal way of saying thank you to them for the phenomenal support they gave my family when my cousin was killed and which they still give nearly nine years later. They offer a life time of support and are truly amazing.

When my three children are at school, I spend my time visiting primary and secondary schools, taking creative writing workshops, reading from and talking publically about DEAD GAME, the inspiration behind it and the upcoming sequel, Waiting Game.

Dead Game has over forty reviews on Amazon, mostly five stars, which I’m very proud of and in June 2011 DEAD GAME had a 10 out of 10 readers review posted by the Guardian with the headline … 'A brilliant read that will get your heart beating instantly' The first edition of Dead Game is still on Kindle and like I said there are only forty paperback copies left.

I hope I’ve not waffled on too much – I’m sure I could go on ;0) Sorry. Here’s wishing you all a great Friday and thank you for taking the time to read this and for the warm and crazy welcome you gave me and other newcomers yesterday.

Oh and I do have a blog / website! http://www.claire-kinton.blogspot.com/

I've just had a look at Dead Game. Wow! You have lots of great reviews!

Here's the link to it.

Claire Kinton (clairekinton) | 10 comments Aww... thank you so much Patti for taking a look at it and for adding the link to Amazon. I've just got in from doing a 10k run in the rain and am looking a bit like a drowned rat! My dog, Jake, doesn't look much better either. Unfortunately, no matter what the weather, I have to run, or mentally I won't get around that Marathon in April! Hot shower and a cup of tea next! Many thanks again x

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Pleasure, Claire! I hope you (and Jake, of course) have recovered from your run now.

I'm afraid that I agree with the great Phyllis Diller in that my idea of exercise is a good, brisk, sit. ;)

I love it! she is my new role model.

Claire Kinton (clairekinton) | 10 comments I would normally quite agree with you ;0) Why run somewhere when you can catch a bus? The cakes I'm now eating with the kids though are going down fairly guilt free, whereas usually I’ll try to stop myself at one or two... I’m now over indulging under the great illusion that I’ll run it off tomorrow, when I have the pleasure of forcing my legs to complete nine miles ;0/ Plus I get to hear heavy breathing again! LOL

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hmmmm. Guilt free cakes....no still not worth it.

Now, heavy breathing though....

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Depends who is doing it Patti!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yeah, true. Not if it's me. I don't breath heavy anyway. I wheeze.

Thank you so much for saving Dead Game Elle - I hope you enjoy it. Please let me know what you think of it.

I just ran six miles after two weeks off due to the snow and an injured ankle and my breathing was really bad. Remind me why I'm doing this???? Oh yes, for children who are struggling with literacy. If you can't learn to read... you can't read to learn! I’ll keep running then. I am looking forward to the marathon being behind me, I must admit. Hope you're well Patti. Take care x

Laura Hart (lobopub) | 20 comments Hi Claire,

Just had a peek on Amazon - another one to add. Well done with the Brit Writer coup - can't believe someone actually made a comment about the charitable aid.

Good luck with The Waiting Game.

Laura

Claire Kinton (clairekinton) | 10 comments Hi Laura,

There are some funny people out there aren't there? Thank you so much for checking Dead Game out. I really hope you enjoy it when you get chance to read it - keep me posted on what you think.

Have a great weekend... are you up to anything exciting?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hi Claire! Lovely to see you! I bet those six miles were really hard!

You deserve chocolate. Lots n lots of chocolate.

I'm writing the second in my fantasy trilogy at the moment, so late nights and sleepy mornings. I read after I've done writing - helps me relax. I can enjoy another author's hard work!

Will keep you posted when I'm reading.

I'm about to tuck into a homemade chilli and I think, now that you've mentioned it, I might just have to have some chocolate for afters. They were indeed a very hard six miles, muscles burning, head saying 'stop' but I forced myself to finish it. It's all a mind game which I'm determined to win. That said I'm not looking forward to tomorrow's nine miles - yuck - oh more chocolate though maybe as a reward!

Well done on the trilogy writing Laura. That's amazing. I will certainly look them up, post the link for me. Dead Game & Waiting Game will, one day, be a trilogy (title of final book undecided, I've two options’ I'm playing with at the moment!) I think once ‘Waiting Game’ is out there, I'll get stuck into the finale! I’m looking forward to writing again. I get withdrawal symptoms. Editing is great and it’s wonderful to see the book finally polished but there’s something very special about having a clean sheet of paper with an infinite amount of possibilities waiting in my pen.

I think I would probably burst if I didn't write - it's the most anodyne of pursuits! Editing - ooh, yes, the brutal bit, but you're right it's good to be getting on with the story.
