Welcome to the buddy read, Cheryl! Do you already have the book? It's not late at all. We haven't started yet...well, technically we start today (02/22/12).

Cheryl (cawils_99) I have the book on my iPad. Thanks, I've been wanting to read this book for a while.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Please put your answers in BOLD, if you can, not the questions.

Lisa Kay’s Questions for Prologue – Chapter 2

1. I don’t read many Young Adult books, and have never read one set in Victorian England. Is this a genre or setting which you read a lot?

2. For the most part, the POV throughout the book is from Tessa perception. Why do you think the author opened the prologue from Will’s? What is your impression of him? Of Jem? Of their friendship/relationship?

3. The book is named after Tessa’s mother’s necklace. What is the significance of that?

4. Do you blame Tessa for going with the Dark Sisters? Did she use enough common sense? (The coachman was enough to scare me off; but then, I’m such a wuss!) Did she have any other alternative? We had the reader’s advantage of knowing the emblem of the two snakes was on the weapon that killed the young girl in the alley, so I can’t fault her for that. And “The Pandemonium Club,” is pretty much a wash, IMHO; it could be named that just in fun. Comments. (BTW, do you think the Dark Sisters had access to Nate at all, or was that just a bluff? If so, how did they get his ring?)

5. What would a closer look at the globe in Sisters’ office have revealed?

6. Mundanes, Shax demons, Nephilim warriors? What do you think of the world building so far? Are you grasping enough of it to make it interesting? Is it too much info dump, just right, or too little and causing an overload of too many unanswered questions?

7. Though Tessa is not impressed with it, I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised by the ability that Tessa has. Taking on someone else’s appearance could come in quite handy, don’t you think? (Of course, I could do without the pain, vomiting, passing out, and someone kidnapping me for it, LOL!) Comments.

8. Whoever could the Magister be? Is he someone high up in the government or just in the upper echelon of whatever underworld society to which Tessa had been spirited away? What does he want with Tessa? And why does he need to marry her?

9. What was Miranda?

10. Is the reason Will showed up in Tessa’s room valid? Do you think she would have made it out of there on her second attempt without his intervention?

11. Why was Mrs. Dark trying to kill Tessa and not Will? I’m glad to see the last of the Dark Sisters (I hope - but maybe that was only one down)! Still, ugh, they stumbled across a slaughterhouse. What does that mean? And is Will an angel? Is Tessa alright? Will there be a lasting effect from her wound?

Lisa Kay’s Questions for Prologue – Chapter 2

1. I don’t read many Young Adult books, and have never read one set in Victorian England. Is this a genre or setting which you read a lot?

I read quite a few young adult books. Find they have more of a story and less fluff than a lot of adult books. Maybe I'm reading the wrong kinds :)

Can't say I've read many set in this era so this is new to me. Interesting though and I'm intrigued on what happens in the story.

2. For the most part, the POV throughout the book is from Tessa perception. Why do you think the author opened the prologue from Will’s? What is your impression of him? Of Jem? Of their friendship/relationship?

we needed to get an idea of who he is and why he happened to be there rescuing Tessa. If he just swooped in an played the hero we would of been more huh than yay. I love his childlike attitude as it is a different contrast to the job he is has. You can tell he is good at his job but he doesn't allow it to his affect his way of personality anymore than it has too. As for Jem hard to say I am thinking Family at this stage with the rivalry they have going with how easy the kill was but disappointed he couldn't show off.

3. The book is named after Tessa’s mother’s necklace. What is the significance of that?

At this stage it seems to be of sentimental value but I'm thinking there is more to the necklace than even Tessa know at this stage.

Being that we are in an era of no mobile phones. One would have to trust the letter was legit. They knew enough about her and Nate to make her feel they could be trusted. Being in a new country she wouldn't know what The Pandemonium Club is.

Personally, I think the dark sisters would of took her anyhow. If not the easy way they would of dragged her into the coach. So in the long run Tessa was probably better off trusting the letter.

To have the information they did to get Tessa to trust them they must of had or known Nate at some stage. And according to the blurb on the book Nate is abducted just unknown by who.

5. What would a closer look at the globe in Sisters’ office have revealed?

at a guess the lands populated by the mystical (lack of a better word at thus stage) population. Since it has been determined that they aren't human or mundane as us folk are.

6. Mundanes, Shax demons, Nephilim warriors? What do you think of the world building so far? Are you grasping enough of it to make it interesting? Is it too much info dump, just right, or too little and causing an overload of too many unanswered questions?

At the moment I feel like I'm in a cross world of Harry potter with mundanes and muggles, supernatural with shad demons and The Ancient Future series with Nephilim warriors.

I'm understanding the story but I think at this stage I'm as confused as Tessa who has also been thrown into this new world. Though I'm looking forward to discovering it with her.

It would be a cool gift to have. Though I'm not sure of the while possession part and the reliving how they died. Would defiantly solve a few crimes if one could do that in the real world.

8. Whoever could the Magister be? Is he someone high up in the government or just in the upper echelon of whatever underworld society to which Tessa had been spirited away? What does he want with Tessa? And why does he need to marry her?

by marrying her he somehow gets access to her power be it shared through consummation if the marriage or just by Tessa being a prisoner by marriage. Being that will doesn't know him I'm guessing that he is more like a president of the pandemonium club more than some high roller. But that opinion may change further into the book

9. What was Miranda?

Miranda was some Frankenstein person made from the slaughter room as is the coach driver. Some magical zombie.

10. Is the reason Will showed up in Tessa’s room valid? Do you think she would have made it out of there on her second attempt without his intervention?

I think Will is genuine. He was investigating the murder and the symbol led him there. While doing recon he came across Tessa

Tessa could be a powerful enemy. Not only did they train her but she could find out if they kill more people just by a scrap of clothing. I don't think Will is an angel more of a supernatural being on the side of good. Since there has to be an even balance between dark and light.

I think the wound will leave a scar but don't think any permanent damage at this stage that Will and his side can't repair.

Looking forward to the rest of the story it's got me sucked in at the moment. At lest having set chapters I won't be up all night reading to find out what happens next. :)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Kylie

#1 – I’ve only read a few YA and they have all been highly recommended – thus, well worth it. Just started reading them last year and am sorry I waited so long. While I am sure this genre has its washouts, like every other one, I haven’t found one yet. As far as Victorian England, it is one of my favorite settings, as the majority of what I read is romance.

#2 – Yes, I loved the opening. Gave us the ambience of the book with a bit of the world-building thrown in. I’m listening to the audio and Will’s voice is one of my favorites. He has a lot of charm and a bit of a cynical edge; he also sounds very “laid back” with a very keen sense of intelligence underneath. Don’t know about his relationship with Jem; I, too, haven’t figured out what is up with their friendly rivalry.

#3 – I’m thinking the same thing! Will be interesting to see what/how/why/who of the necklace!

#4 – I agree. Their being women, sad to say, was also a reason I would have trusted them. If someone didn’t pick you up at the dock back then, you were pretty much “easy pickings” from all the stories I read. Not a very safe place. Yeah, I wonder if we’ll learn of Nate’s fate in this book or on down the series.

#5 – Oh, good call. Maybe.

#6 – I haven’t read The Ancient Future series, Kylie; I’ll have to check it out. I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m getting just the right dose/mix of info to unanswered questions. I will admit to going back over the story a bit to clarify things. Which is alright by me as something with fantasy/magic/paranormal in it is NOT my forte.

#7 – Valid point; I would want to relive anything too gruesome. However, it would be nice to help solve crimes.

#8 – I thought this too, then I slept on it and now I’m wondering if he wants her to take on the appearance or shape of someone he “loved” or was obsessed with. Maybe even killed? Could be he wants her ability. But wanting to marry her? **shrugs** That is what made me thing he has an obsession to someone departed.

#9 – Hmmm. I’ll go with that until I heard differently, LOL!

#10 – I think Will is the real deal, too.

#11 – Oh, I hadn’t thought of her become a “powerful enemy” to the “PC,” but you’re right! Good call. Maybe that is why Mrs. Dark was aiming for her (I just figured she blamed her for her sister’s death). As far as Will…I’ll have to “read and find out” as Midu always says. ☺ Same with the wound.

Oh, yes! This story has “sucked me right in” too! I’m very impressed.

Sure, I am happy to do tomorrow's!! :) Sometimes I don't get the reading done until later in the day, so I will probably have the questions up sometime tomorrow night.

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Lisa Kay’s Questions for Prologue – Chapter 2

1. I don’t read many Young Adult books, and have never read one set in Victorian England. Is this a genre or setting which you read a lot?

I started to read young adult book only recently, I read just a few and I have divided opinions so far. Some liked very much, some less. Sometimes they are annoying me by milking the love triangle girl-good boy-bad boy thing too much.
As for Victorian England, as a fan of historical romances, I have read a lot of books in that setting and I love that era. :)

2. For the most part, the POV throughout the book is from Tessa perception. Why do you think the author opened the prologue from Will’s? What is your impression of him? Of Jem? Of their friendship/relationship?

Well maybe author plans to switch between Will' and Tess' POV?
I liked Will so far. I like confident heroes and with a sense of humor.
As for Jem, so far no impression. I was more in a mood where-is-the-monster and their relationship just did not leave big impression on me...

3. The book is named after Tessa’s mother’s necklace. What is the significance of that?

Well I think that pendant must be significant because the whole book is named after it. I don't know. Maybe he is the cause of Tess ability to change?

I do not blame her. She was alone in an unknown country and city. People appeared with letter from her brother.... I would probably do the same, no mater what strange vibes I got.
I think that Black sisters do not have access to Nate anymore. He is either dead or run away some time ago... I hope he is alive.

5. What would a closer look at the globe in Sisters’ office have revealed?

I think it is different, maybe shows regions in world that humans do not know that exist. Regions where only magical creatures/people live.

6. Mundanes, Shax demons, Nephilim warriors? What do you think of the world building so far? Are you grasping enough of it to make it interesting? Is it too much info dump, just right, or too little and causing an overload of too many unanswered questions?

World building is very good. Not to much not too little. Just enough to keep me hooked. I would be staying and reading this late into the night, if there was not chapter limit per day. :)

Maybe it could be handy but it can also be easily exploited.I would not like to have it, I don't know why, but it does not seem attractive to me. Being me is more than enough.

8. Whoever could the Magister be? Is he someone high up in the government or just in the upper echelon of whatever underworld society to which Tessa had been spirited away? What does he want with Tessa? And why does he need to marry her?

Will told us that Magister=master. I think he is the master/ruler of the 'Pandemonium Club'.
What does he want with Tessa? Well she is perfect bride for some pervert. He can have busty blond one night and slim brunette another night in bed.

9. What was Miranda?

I think she was a golem. The person made of clay or something like it and animated by magic. it is mentioned that Dark sisters skinned people, probably that's what they need the skins for. To dress up their servants...

10. Is the reason Will showed up in Tessa’s room valid? Do you think she would have made it out of there on her second attempt without his intervention?

I think that Will did not lie, and that he followed trails/clues about dead girl he found in Prologue. I doubt she could escape without him.

Well when other people arrived, I think Mrs. Dark concluded that she can not stop them escape so when tried to kill Tessa so they can not take her away. Better dead than in someone else hands...
I think Dark Sisters used human parts for their experiments/magic. I already wrote about my golem theory...
Nephilims are children of angels and humans, so Will is probably half angel...
I think Tessa is going to be alright. Maybe wound will even trigger another of her special abilities? We'll see....

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) I did not read Kylie's answers before, so now I see that we have some similar theories. LOL

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments No pressure here, Gin. You can volunteer to do DQs if you want. I would rather have people in the “buddy read” than stay out b/c they don’t want to compose questions. I usually will do the DQs if no one else will; however, I do really do love it when others do them b/c I find it so fascinating to read what they come up with. Also, if I’m the only one doing them, I may not keep to the schedule – I’ll take a break now and then or, occasionally, speed up ☺ .

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Dragana

#1 – Yes, I have noticed the frequency of the love triangle in YA and, since that isn’t anywhere near my favorite theme, I haven’t read that many. Just a select few where the reviews were just too tempting.

#2 – Well, Will definitely has a sense of humor! LOL!

#3 – I’m kind of wondering if her mother had some ability also and if she can change into her mother and, thus, acquire that ability. LOL! I’ve actually been thinking about this book quite a bit (woke in the middle of the night thinking about the necklace); it has really captured my imagination.

#4 – I’m hope Nate is still alive, but I think the Dark sisters were bluffing and didn’t have access to him anymore.

#5 – Hmmm. Looking more and more as if this is true.

#6 – I’m trying to be good too. Good thing Real Life if busy right now and will keep me on the straight and narrow.

#7 – True. ☺

#8 –Well, I hadn’t thought of the variety angle! Men! LOL!

#9 – Eek!

#11 – Oh! Thanks for the info on Nephilims. Ah! A trigger, eh? Interesting.

Gin Lisa Kay’s Questions for Prologue – Chapter 2

1. I don’t read many Young Adult books, and have never read one set in Victorian England. Is this a genre or setting which you read a lot?
I don't prefer YA, the genre is hit or miss for me. As for Victorian England....love it. However, not something I commonly read

2. For the most part, the POV throughout the book is from Tessa perception. Why do you think the author opened the prologue from Will’s? What is your impression of him? Of Jem? Of their friendship/relationship?
His perspective in the beginning helps to pull pieces of the story together and identify him as a main character. Because of hearing his perspective at first you automatically trust him when he is introduced to Tessa. My first impression is that he is loyal, fun and mischievous. There relationship seems close friend/brotherly to me. With Jem being the older and more of a rule following kind of person.

3. The book is named after Tessa’s mother’s necklace. What is the significance of that?
I still am not sure. I do think it signifies that her mother is important in someway. There was probably more to her then Tessa is aware

I don't think Tessa had any reason to doubt the sisters. How or why else would they know who she was and when she was arriving. Not to mention the letter from her brother using his nickname for her. Even if her were forced to write the letter, I can't imagine he'd try to make it believable. I almost wonder if her brother is even alive. They may of had access to him at some point, but I don't think they did at that time

5. What would a closer look at the globe in Sisters’ office have revealed?
I'm guessing some type of alternate plain of some sort or maybe

6. Mundanes, Shax demons, Nephilim warriors? What do you think of the world building so far? Are you grasping enough of it to make it interesting? Is it too much info dump, just right, or too little and causing an overload of too many unanswered questions?
It's just enough to keep me intrigued. I love a little mystery. There is nothing worse to me then the main character explaining the world to me rather than getting to experience it for myself. We get to be just as confused as Tessa, experiencing it as she would

I could see how the ability would come in handy, but I have never given much thought about shifting myself. Hmmm....kind of creepy, but on the other hand could be fun. I think I would only enjoy it if I could stay the same person for long periods of time. I don't like the idea of having the voices in my head though

8. Whoever could the Magister be? Is he someone high up in the government or just in the upper echelon of whatever underworld society to which Tessa had been spirited away? What does he want with Tessa? And why does he need to marry her?
I have no idea. I can't even imagine how they knew she had the ability. Seeing as how the book has mentioned nephilim and angels, I'm assuming the Magister is someone high up from the other side

9. What was Miranda?
at first I thought she was a demon, but after her death I'm guessing a machine of some sort.

10. Is the reason Will showed up in Tessa’s room valid? Do you think she would have made it out of there on her second attempt without his intervention?
I think his reason is valid. Again the whole trust thing having his perspective at first. I don't think she would have made it out on her own. she definitely has the whole damsel in distress thing going. I do think her character is going to grow and become more independent as she begins to have a better understanding of her abilities and this new world.

I imagine Tessa is more powerful and important then we know at this point and they don't want to risk the other guys having her. I'm also thinking that Will might be immortal (because of him joking about the hand wound being fatal) so why bother. I guess he is a nephilim, not an actual angel. I assume Tessa will be fine, even if it takes healing from an outside source.

#1 – I was looking for a certain type of book in B&N over a year ago when a bookstore saleswoman asked me if I read YA, as she thought of a book that might fall into my area of interest. My eyebrows rose to my hairline. I’d never really thought of even looking at them. Those that I have tried since becoming really active in GR have been great; but I must admit, I’ve been very selective.

#2 – All very true. It does pull the story together quite nicely and make me trust him more than I would have otherwise.

#4 – I hope he is still alive; I don’t think they have him either.

#5 – Uh. Now, there’s an idea.

#6 – I love a little mystery too! Yeah, I don’t like a lot of info-dumping. Read the first in one series that was WONDERFUL, but then the author info-dumped BIG time in the second. Ugh.

#7 – Eep! Wouldn’t want the voices in my head either.

#8 – Oh, excellent question! How did they know?

#9 – Yes, almost robotic.

#10 – Loved how he kind of just strolled in there, LOL! And his reaction to her beaning him.

#11 – Oh, good catch about his sarcasm! I hadn’t thought of that.

Gin @Lisa Kay GR is what has caused me to read more and more YA recently. I never gave them much interest before. People just keep recommending them. I think I have yet to give one 5 stars though......maybe Harry Potter, I can't remember. The stories are usually very captivating, but a little too predictable. Also the romance can be too quick and forced. So far I'm not feeling any of that with this book though.

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) In chapters 3-5 we are introduced to the Institute and his residents. I find them all intriguing and full of secrets.... So excuse me if I ask a lot of questions, but I would like to know what you think. :)

Questions for Chapter 3 - Chapter 5

12. What are your impressions about Institute and Shadowhunters role in general? Is it a little bit sad to fight without pause until you die?
Is it just me, or did you find it strange that complex is so big and can host hundreds of warriors but is mostly empty.... Where are they?

13. What do you think how did the maid Sophie got the scar on her face?
And why does she hate Will? Did you believe the explanation she gave to Tessa or you think there is something more?

14. Do you agree with Tessa and dislike Jessamine?
To quote Tessa: what is so dreadful about Institute? Why does Jessamine hates it there?

15. Jem is back again to tease Will. But he is obviously not well. What do you think is the problem?

16. Then there are Charlotte and Henry. I though they were such a cute couple. But then this sentence near the end of chapter 5 got me all puzzled: "she had been advised enough times—not to force on Henry affection he probably did not want" Obviously, there is some secret there also...

17. I find myself often smiling over puns and teasing in this book. What is your favorite scene/dialog so far?

18. Yes I know that I forgot our main heroine Tessa completely. She is so cute struggling and trying to be a proper lady... And failing. I noticed some blushes and shy (and not so shy) glances. What do you think, in whom will she fall in love - Will or Jem? Or someone third we did not meet so far...

19. Any other mystery / secret / weird behavior you noticed and is bugging you? Tell us your observations or share your crazy conspiracy theories. ;)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Great, Dragana! I haven't read the DQs yet b/c I have listened to the reading yet. I just got back to my friend's house. Our drive took a little longer than I was expecting. I did get him to listen to a western while we drove; he seems to be enjoying it. Hopefully I'll get back to listening to Clockwork Angel later tonight.

I'll do the DQs for tomorrow.

Kylie Questions for Chapter 3 - Chapter 5

12. What are your impressions about Institute and Shadowhunters role in general? Is it a little bit sad to fight without pause until you die?
Is it just me, or did you find it strange that complex is so big and can host hundreds of warriors but is mostly empty.... Where are they?

Shadowhunters to me seem to be like the police of the underworld, keeping everyone else in line.

Fighting until you die is sad, but if that's your career i suppose dieing in the line of duty is to be expected.

I didn't think it strange that the complex was nearly empty, as it was stated that there were numerous complexs and that the orphans tend to live there, so maybe once your at age you get to live within the mundane and just work for the shadowhunters. They would still need enough room for visiting teams and if other downworlders need protection.

13. What do you think how did the maid Sophie got the scar on her face?
And why does she hate Will? Did you believe the explanation she gave to Tessa or you think there is something more?

The scar on her face may of been cause by a demon attack, since most people seem to be living there due to attacks of some sort.

I think the reason she gave Tessa in regards to Will is partly true, I'm thinking that she may have a soft spot for Will or there is some past history there.

14. Do you agree with Tessa and dislike Jessamine?
To quote Tessa: what is so dreadful about Institute? Why does Jessamine hates it there?

I'm on the fence with Jessamine at the moment, i'm thinking she is like a spoilt little rich girl but at the same time, I'm thinking there is something underlining why she hates it there, since they all have their own reasons to being at the complex.

15. Jem is back again to tease Will. But he is obviously not well. What do you think is the problem?

They are keeping it quiet so I'm guessing that it is something serious, like a shadowhunter illness, or some poison from a demon they have attacked.

16. Then there are Charlotte and Henry. I though they were such a cute couple. But then this sentence near the end of chapter 5 got me all puzzled: "she had been advised enough times—not to force on Henry affection he probably did not want" Obviously, there is some secret there also...

I thought they were the happy married couple to start with, but with that comment it sounds more a arranged relationship. She is going by what has been told to her so she doesn't know Henry that well or it would of been by past experience.

Henry seems to be a bit of a scatterbrain, with not knowing that he was on fire, and the zoning out. So maybe he is sick with early dementia or something like, hence the comment not to force affection.

17. I find myself often smiling over puns and teasing in this book. What is your favorite scene/dialog so far?

My favorite comment so far in the book is when Will is talking about marrying Agatha and he says "Beauty fades, but cooking is eternal"

At this stage I'm thinking Will as he is so prominent in the book. But he seems childish compared to Tessa so that may be more a brother/sister friendship. Its hard to say at the moment.

19. Any other mystery / secret / weird behavior you noticed and is bugging you? Tell us your observations or share your crazy conspiracy theories. ;)

Since I've only read to the end of chapter 5 at this stage, I'm interested to see how Mr Mortmain knows what Shadowhunters are. Since there identity is meant to be such a secret.

I was very intrigued to get there. Can’t wait to discover all the secrets it holds. Yes, very sad. Yes, the emptiness of it confused me. I guess they are out fighting all over the world.

13. What do you think how did the maid Sophie got the scar on her face? And why does she hate Will? Did you believe the explanation she gave to Tessa or you think there is something more?
I get the impression it had something to do with Will – maybe he saved her from a demon attack? I think Sophie and Will have a more complex relationship that first hinted. I’m thinking he saw her at her most vulnerable…

14. Do you agree with Tessa and dislike Jessamine? To quote Tessa: what is so dreadful about Institute? Why does Jessamine hates it there?
She is pretty vain and immature. I can’t blame her for wanting to know more of the world, but she doesn’t have to be so insensitive to others. She reminds me of the quote: “Be careful what you wish for…”

15. Jem is back again to tease Will. But he is obviously not well. What do you think is the problem?
I haven’t a clue! I can’t imagine having such a severe case of insomnia! Whatever could have caused that? And he’s coughing up blood? Not a good sign. I get the impression it is a death knell.

16. Then there are Charlotte and Henry. I thought they were such a cute couple. But then this sentence near the end of chapter 5 got me all puzzled:"she had been advised enough times—not to force on Henry affection he probably did not want" Obviously, there is some secret there also...
Yes, love maternal Charlotte & bumbling Henry! Very interesting sentence. I wonder who was doing the advising: Henry or someone else?

17. I find myself often smiling over puns and teasing in this book. What is your favorite scene/dialog so far?
Oh, that is a hard one. Hmmm. I do like those scenes with Jem, Will and Tessa in them the most. How about:
“You’re ganging up on me. Is this how it’s going to be from now on? I’ll be odd man out? Dear God, I’ll have to befriend Jessamine.”
18. Yes I know that I forgot our main heroine Tessa completely. She is so cute struggling and trying to be a proper lady... And failing. I noticed some blushes and shy (and not so shy) glances. I’m betting Will. But we may have a triangle going here for a while. Doesn’t this storyline go on for several books?

19. Any other mystery / secret / weird behavior you noticed and is bugging you? Tell us your observations or share your crazy conspiracy theories. ;)
I’m wondering about Mr. Mortmain, the taipan in Shanghai (where Jem is from) and the cog Charlotte and Henry were talking about – and how it relates to Nate! Could Mr. Mortmain be the Magister?
