I'm also new to writing. It's a bit scary out there isn't it? I understand how you feel. You put your heart and soul into a book and then have to let it go for others to judge or make comments on. I think the hardest thing is all the publicity, trying to get it to the audience that you think will like it.Good luck with it all- you've joined a group of many others all in the same boat!

I'm so excited to join this group and learn about other authors, as well as expand my international, literary horizons. I've already discovered some totally awesome books that I never knew existed!
I've just published my first book, When the Lion Roars; a historical fiction, Christian adventure geared towards young adults, but hopefully anyone can read and enjoy it!
But perhaps I should back up and introduce myself a little more first. I love to read about and research far off, little-known places of the world, their cultures, ethnic cuisines, etc. I love archaeology, foreign languages, history, storytelling, animals, music...and if you haven't figured this out by now...FOOD! (All of which I try to incorporate in my writing!)
My first book is about four teenagers who embark on a secret mission to a clandestine military base and get sent back in time to ancient Judea, the Mediterranean and Rome. They have a great adventure and encounter many interesting characters along the way! I started writing it on a sudden whim of inspiration when I was 17, and finished it 3 years later.
I'm currently working on the sequel and...I don't want to give too much away just yet, but the plot traverses the globe from the outer Hebrides of Scotland to a remote lake in Kyrgyzstan, to the mountains of Siberia...and into the far-away mists of the past!
If anyone has read When the Lion Roars and liked it, please let me know!

Hi all, Eamonn here from Ireland. I just completed a short 80 page book that I will have out in April 2016. I write nonfiction and the book is called 'Summer In The City State' - recounting a trip from Ceuta through Fortress Europe's borders in North Africa and into the Rif cities of Morocco, focusing on my time in Tangier. I am working on another project on traveling across Russia to Siberia, and a shorter piece on trip around Lebanon. Hi, I have a trilogy that is set in India during the British Colonial times called Twilight of the British Raj. Book 1 Shadowed in Silk, Book 2 Captured by Moonlight, Book 3 Veiled at Midnight. This trilogy has won a number of awards. I've been to India, but also did tons of research on this historic era.

I was born in Ireland so I have a contemporary romance novella set there, called Londonderry Dreaming. My next book to come out is Sofi's Bridge, a historical romance this May 2016, and a non-fiction book this August called Finding Sarah Finding Me: A Birthmother's Story.

I'm very glad to have now discovered Goodreads as my previous method of finding new books was to just do a search on my Kindle. Being an avid reader (of mostly non-fiction and the occasional novel) and a global citizen, I have often thought about travel writing. Thanks to being on maternity leave, I finally achieved the goal of writing a book, which is based on insights gained during my time spent in Ukraine (almost 10 years).

I am just getting to know this site and my author status doesn't seem to have been approved yet. I would appreciate any tips on where to look for discussions related to travel writing (Is this the best/only group?) and perhaps connecting with other travel writers to review each others' work.

Set in the Netherlands, The Lover’s Portrait (June 24, 2016) is the contemporary story of American art history student Zelda Richardson, who finds clues to the whereabouts of a collection of masterpieces hidden somewhere in Amsterdam, secreted away in 1942 by a homosexual art dealer who’d rather die than turn his collection over to his Nazi blackmailer. Her discoveries make her a target of someone willing to steal – and even kill – to find the lost paintings. As the list of suspects grows, Zelda realizes she has to track down the lost collection and unmask a killer if she wants to survive.

This amateur sleuth mystery describes the plight of homosexuals and Jewish artists in Europe during World War II, as well as the complexities inherent to the restitution of artwork stolen by the Nazis in the 1930s and 1940s. The Lover’s Portrait draws on my own experiences gained while studying art history in the Netherlands and working for several Dutch museums.

Down and Out in Kathmandu: Adventures in Backpacking (December 2015) is a travel fiction novel about an idealistic American backpacker volunteering as an English teacher in Nepal who finds herself entangled with an international gang of smugglers whose Thai leader believes she’s stolen their diamonds.

Loosely based on my own experiences traveling around Southeast Asia, Down and Out in Kathmandu is meant to be a somewhat silly, slightly cynical, travel adventure story. It offers a peek into the backpacker culture of Nepal and Thailand, and insight into what life can be like for a Westerner volunteering in a developing country.

For me just being out on the wide ocean was joy itself, and writing about the journey helped me begin to explore the inner journey too. Of course, one freighter trip wasn't enough, so I traveled to Europe next -- 21 long days across the Atlantic as the only passenger! -- and found to my dismay that the ship home had been cancelled, so it was a scramble finding another Atlantic crossing in mid summer, and once I found one my European plans had to be adjusted. But that's the nature of freighter travel! You have to love the ocean and be flexible. And I found that writing as I sailed along made the voyage so much more . Born in Hong Kong, I received a bilingual education (Chinese and English) from an early age. For my writing career, I have two books to my name:

Land And The Ruling Class In Hong Kong (non-fiction book about how the land system has led to all kinds of economic and social ills.)

Fated and Fateless (fiction set in colonial Hong Kong - a story of how corruption and greed distorts humanity.)

I've recently finished writing a historical epic set in 17th century China, which is about the legendary life of Kangxi Emperor's grandmother, the influential Mongolian-born matriarch descended from Genghis Khan's Borjigit clan. An impassioned heroine trapped between loyalty to her Mongol tribe and forbidden love in the Qing imperial court, she eventually becomes the behind-the-scene regent for two consecutive Qing Emperors. In her flowering youth, she is forced to juggle impossible love and the onus of duty. As a mother and grandmother, she has to ride out storm after storm of deadly internecine conflicts to protect the Aisin Gioro heirs.

This historical novel is now awaiting its publishing fate.

Hi, my name is Lucy Lang and I'm the published author of Dislocation, which was published in July 2016. The memoir charts my turbulent but happy childhood going from the UK to East Africa. It describes an Africa that no longer exists and includes sea voyages through the Suez Canal and the numerous house moves, which did not help my mother's bi-polar.

Hi Judith,
It was one of the highlights of my life. And one interesting thing about this book is that it covers only 12 days of an eight-month stay. So I've got another Yemen book coming, probably in 2018, after finishing my current one on Egypt. Before I retired, my wife worried that I wouldn't have enough to do but that's certainly not the case!

Thanks, Patrick. I think you'll find it a fairly easy read. I tried to keep the style relatively brisk, while still packing in lots of information.
