Why does Harry want to be an auror? I seriously don't understand, because throughout the books he constantly expresses how he doesn't like it when he has to defend himself against Voldemort. And well, being an auror is like whole life full of that except some other criminal. Also am I spelling auror right?

He never thought about being an auror until Barty crouch jr/mad eye suggested it for him. It was the only career choice he ever considered after that so he just became one. And yes you spelles it right
But apparently I can't spell "spelled" right haha
Lol, but still it doesn't really explain why he wants to become one. I mean Harry Potter isn't really about listening to what people say.
Harry wants to make a difference. He wants to make the world safer. Harry doesn't complain that he hates fighting Voldemort, it's that his life and and the lives of everyone around him are in constant danger. People don't become police officers (nor do wizards become aurors) because they enjoy putting their life on the line (well, maybe some do, I don't know) fighting the "bad guys", they become police officers (and aurors) so people aren't at the criminals mercy. It thing same thing with soldiers.
Serve and protect (Yeah, I stole the American police motto) that's why [most] people like that (Aurors, police, soldier, ext.) do what they do. [Most] People don't enjoy the idea of being killed. :)

Heaven wrote: "Harry wants to make a difference. He wants to make the world safer. Harry doesn't complain that he hates fighting Voldemort, it's that his life and and the lives of everyone around him are in const..."perfect answer!
Harry wants to make the world a safer place for every-one. He knows what its like to feel scared, sad, alone, neglected, and I suppose he doesn't want anyone to be like that anymore. He doesn't want to be in danger, nor does he want to put any-one else in danger. And, he wants to protect and help not just friends, but any-one in possible danger.
But its true that Harry never considered any other career... Or rather, we should say, not many careers were suggested for students in the entire series...
Harry's just so darn noble. I think, given what we know of his character, he'd never feel as though he'd done enough to "make up for" those deaths. He'd want to use his skills to their extent. It says in the books that after impostor-Moody told him he'd make a good Auror, he'd never really considered any other job. I think he'd never really be happy doing something like playing professional Quidditch. He'd want to get rid of as many Dark wizards as possible. I have a theory he's a bit OCD. :)
