Chandan Kumar | 2 comments Me and my father both are avid readers. U can say i got this habit as a genetic gift. Now i usually buy books worth 2-3k each month for both of us. My choice is kindle or epub while my father needs hardcopy and online shopping helps a lot in that regards. After reading my father usually donate these books to library.

Good that you have a bookworm for a father :)
And nice idea, donating... but am never able to do that. Am too possessive of my books.

Don't we all wish for unlimited finances when it comes to money.
In 2017 I will be keenly jotting down the price I pay for each book. Just to see how much exactly I spend.

Carol Dobson | 2737 comments This morning I had a book arrive for me from Amazon, bought by husband as a surprise, which cost 1p plus postage!
It is called, 'Parisians, An Adventure history of Paris' by Graham Robb.Parisians: An Adventure History of Paris

message 306: by Kartik (new)

Kartik | 5 comments Was analysing my last year spend. It was close to INR 10 K. All my books are Kindle edition are therefore cheaper. Some of the books are business oriented and can cost upward of INR 1 K for each.

message 307: by Kiran (new)

Kiran Vijayan I spend around 7-8k on an average. I subscribe to 6-7 magazines too which take up quite a bit of time(and money) too.

message 308: by Prem (new)

Prem 1500-2000, which is a not-insignificant portion of my salary oops

message 309: by Shobhit (new)

Shobhit Shobhit (shobhitg) | 253 comments 2000 bucks a month plus KU subscription and subscription to some offline magazine

message 310: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 2737 comments Here in Britain we are very fortunate as there are many charity shops which sell books extremely cheaply. It always amazes me how many books have been published and are being published.

message 311: by Raja (last edited Sep 13, 2018 09:55AM) (new)

Raja Annam (rajainrush) | 2 comments Paperbacks from university library (until I graduate :-|). Otherwise hasty purchases on Kindle. Guess I will continue living in an academic environment just for the library.

Also my friends gift books on birthdays.

Carol Dobson | 2737 comments Sometimes I buy second-hand books on Amazon and they are really cheap.

message 316: by Priyanka (new)

Priyanka Dutta | 70 comments Average monthly 200 INR.

message 317: by Richa (new)

Richa Sharma (ric_743) | 124 comments I used to spend so much ion books n my maternal home. I was having so many shelves, cupboards just to keep my books. Now I don't have much space. So my husband and I have a session every month when I feel like buying more books. So we agreed on only 2 books a month except books exhibitions and book fairs. Poor me.

message 318: by Kanarese (new)

Kanarese | 23 comments One hour per day, on weekends four to five hours.

message 319: by Sid (new)

Sid (msudarsanak) | 198 comments I am choosy on books, nothing like I spend so much per month on books but I do spend least an hour or two everyday on books. Any good deal on any interesting book, I tend to grab, trying not to pile too many books at home so I select and buy. Completed about 20 books so far this year, a few not tracked on good reads

message 320: by Himanshu (new)

Himanshu Modi (himanshumodi) | 10 comments About 1000 a month between books for myself and my wife, I would venture. Was a lot higher when I had audible."com" subscription. Thankfully their Indian service started at a ridiculously low price (and a lot smaller library).

I buy exclusively Kindle books, besides the audible subscription

message 321: by Ankit (last edited Dec 01, 2019 09:49PM) (new)

Ankit Mundada (ankitmundada) | 2 comments Now you don't need to spend any money on books! On infireads, you can see nearby readers with their distance from you and send a request to borrow or exchange the book.
You can download it from here: http://bit.ly/freeinfireads

Mukul Agrawal | 1 comments hey have you ever tried www.mypustak.com.
They have their slogan Read more and spend less . They truly meet this by providing books for free and deliver them at very nominal shipping handling at your doorstep. Its a social venture with a mission to provide books to all readers for free and bridge the gap between donors and readers .

message 323: by Madiha (new)

Madiha | 221 comments I always went to the library and got books rarely from Book Fairs (under $3 USD) and got books from giveaways.
I always read books from the library then buy if I really love it.
However, Covid-19 = Library on Demand, and my folks don't want me going
Investing = Broke Aadi
Last week, I bought HP & The Cursed Child for $10, while it was $20 on Amazon, so I'm even more broke...
Trying overdrive now..
I have kindle but i don't want to mess up my eyes even more (I'm on a laptop for 17-20 hrs a day)

Abish (abish4i) | 1266 comments Kindle is fine with natural light the inbuilt isn't reader friendly ...

I read few book on laptop when they are less than 200p and still ends up with a headaches.
You should see KU via login from amazon.in (it works and best for now)

message 325: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments ive got a sctibd account that takes care of most of my reading and audio within my monthly charge. its truly my life saver. because here in the UAE physical bks are really expensive and they don't believe in ebks. amazon .com for kindle versions and Google Play books too.i don't have any budget but I definitely wait till the bk is really down to a reasonable reasonable cost - max 3$ .

message 326: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4067 comments UAE, interesting.

I rarely spend money on books. I get most of my novels for free from my office's library. When I buy books online, my mom scolds me and asks why I am buying online when I can get a book for free from the library and return it later after reading, thereby reducing the clutter at home. I usually don't re-read books, so she has a point.

message 327: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4067 comments @ 17-20 hours on laptop a day? Goodness gracious! You need to sleep atleast 6 hours a day. I avoid reading books online as you can see I am already wearing glasses. Lol. Only blogs and Wikipedia I read online.

message 328: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments Ok. Where do you work? All.my years at work and even my husband's workplace never boasted of a library. This alone would weigh against all decisions of changing jobs😁. I cannot read a physical book anymore. The luxury of increasing the font size is something else.

Hey I agree with Austin. Sleep deprivation isnt something to be proud off. Do get adequate sleep.

message 330: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4067 comments £ Leena I work in a central government institute in Hyderabad on a contractual basis. Many scientists work in my office. Also various courses are offered to students. So we have a library to cater to their needs. Mostly the library has non fiction books and it has around 1000 novels too. I might not get all the books I see on Goodreads but I am somewhat satisfied with their collection of novels.

I understand your problem with font size. You can of course zoom it online.

message 331: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments Good for you Austin. But now I'm not jealous. I rarely read non fiction D)

message 332: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4067 comments Haha. I haven't borrowed any non fiction books from the library so far.

I sleep 4 hours a day; Too much hw and work. I also wear glasses and got my number changed a while ago. Even w/ my hw, I try to do it on paper as much as possible..

message 334: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4067 comments 4 hours of sleep a day is way too less, atleast for me. But I know some people can't sleep a lot. I personally sleep 6-7 hours as I try to squeeze in my reading time after a busy day at work. Time is a luxury I have to earn these days. Had I had all the time in the world, I would have definitely slept 8 hours a day. Lol.

Another glasses person, hmm. Try to avoid paper and save nature. You are in a catch-22 situation. Haha

I agree that 4 hours is way too little, but I have no option :( I try to make up my sleep on Sundays (as I have extra classes on Sat) but my lil brothers love being extra loud then. I barely can read now which is depressing. Time is a luxury, I agree! Only 6 weeks till school is over, then it'll be a reality- actually 6 weeks PLUS my 6 weeks (?) trip to India THEN it'll be a reality. I think I am going insane w/out sleep tho :(
Definitely a catch-22 situation; I try to recycle as much as possible. No paper would be used if we had no school though lol.

message 336: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4067 comments Hmm, wouldn't it be great if he had 30 hours a day instead of 24? Plenty of time for books and some extra sleep. Lol

Trip to India?! Are you an Indian American?

Glad to know that you are eschewing paper usage whenever/wherever possible.

message 337: by Austin (new)

message 338: by Madiha (new)

Madiha | 221 comments 30 hours of sleep would be amazing!
Well, kinda. My parents WERE Indian before they got naturalized as Americans, so I still have A LOT of family in India!

message 339: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4067 comments I see. My uncle and his family also got naturalised as Americans a long while back. I have never been abroad though.

message 340: by Madiha (new)

Madiha | 221 comments thats nice! but actually never? (ive only been to 3 countries, which of one is Canada soo.)

message 341: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4067 comments I have visited and even lived in many states of India but when it comes to abroad I never got the chance. Growing up as a child, my parents were never interested in going to other countries on vacations, even though they could afford it. Now that I am independent, I am biding for the the right time.

3 countries, ah come on! You are still just a school student. By the time you are a grown up, you would have visited many more countries. ⊂((・▽・))⊃

message 342: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments im.butting in here but Austin, don't wait for the right moment. There never is one. grab the opportunity and go. obviously, now u will have to wait out the pandemic. travelling truly broadens the perspective.

message 343: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments wise words from someone who hasn't travelled at all. D)

message 344: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4067 comments I will keep that in mind Leena. But at least you live in UAE and seen a different country. ^_^

message 345: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments Thats the difference between living in another country and actually travelling and seeing every little corner. Travelling and seeing a country or a different city in India u should be visiting not only the popular tourist spots but also the joints tat onya a native will know.
