I heard pretty rave reviews of Ashok Banker's Ramayan series, yet to read though, currently spellbound by Mahabharat thru Yuganta, will take some time to move over to Ramayan

You B'lore guys! I can't attend any meet :(
Just one more month and I'll be going back to some big city then.
I spend more than half of my pocket money on books, because my univ's law library isn't sufficient for me. It is 3-4K (Rupees) a month.
OMG, it must be the highest amount spent by any of the members. My average is Rs. 500-1000 per month.

Here is my sad tale. I literally live out of the suitcase. I can't afford to carry around the books. I was under the impression that JustBooks will be my saviour. Turns out it is light years away from the place I stay. In Bangalore, there are just too many outlets, not in Mumbai alas! I have to spend like a day to just get to it. Disappointed I had to turn to Crossword AGAIN! So now I need to spend more AND carry the books around too!
Gargi wrote: "I spend more than half of my pocket money on books, because my univ's law library isn't sufficient for me. It is 3-4K (Rupees) a month."Gulp! Don't you pay for other stuffs? For example rent or tax? :P

Haha..Rosun, my hostel fees and all are paid at the beginning of the semester, and no tax as such because I haven't started earning yet. Dad's money! =D

My monthly spend on books varies a lot. Some months I spend only about 500 whereas in some other months I spend 10 times the sum. It is usually at the time of my birthday that I buy more books. Dad and mom gives me about 20K and add to that savings from pocket money of about another 10K! I have also been lucky in having an uncle who buys 20 books of my choice every year! :) :) :). Besides I am a member of 2 local book clubs run by 2 retailers (One being D.C. Books the largest book publisher and retailer in Kerala and another being an upcoming book chain here) which entitles me to about 5K worth of free books in Malayalam or about 3K in English ones. The above book club membership also entitles me to flat 20% discount on any Malayalam title and 15% on English books. I also buy from flipkart and indiaplaza
Dosen't really matter. 10-250 bucks per month, and a 2-3K books whenever I visit home. I know its hard to keep yourself from buying books once you see them.
I spend....less time than money(lol, lame I know), Whenever I go shopping with my sis, she pics up a Vampire book for me so about 500 bucks per 2 months....
Books here in New Zealand are pretty expensive, so I don't usually spend too much on them. Auckland also has an excellent public library system, so there isn't much need to buy books here anyway. However I recently found a lovely used book store just down the road from my university, hidden away quite inconspicuously down a small side street... they have great books on sale for only NZ$4-5, so I'm going to be visiting quite often from now on!I buy heaps of books once a year when I visit India though... you can get new books at ridiculously low prices compared to here.
wow..i never really gave it a thought..i usually order from flipkart..i think its around 300 or so a month..people spend 2-3k a month! never knew that :D
I make it a point to read 5-6 books in a month, so I end up spending around Rs.700+ per month. I buy from College Street, Kolkata(where you get books dirt cheap). Online I used to go for Flipkart, but changed to HS18 from this month. Bought The Help by Kathryn Stockett, the delivery was good, the discount was good, and I got a pen free.
Well almost whole of my pocket money and then i end up asking .. rather begging for colg bus pass :D
Last month I bought about books worth 800 in paperback and 30$ for kindle version ebooks ... I end up liking all books which are costly :(

That you get to bargain :D

The issue with buying books from the street is that they lack the quality and ain't authentic.. My sis and mom have mainly purchased from such places in the past. However, when it comes to me, I look forward to making a collection and hence go for better quality and new.
Spending is intermittent, depending on what I have to read. Last month I ended up 2k whilst prior to that in the last 6 months I had not spent more than 600 or so.
Srishti wrote: "5-6 books a month?! this place is making me feel more and more bad about my reading abilities!"Dont worry I even feel like I am lost in a fantasy world!

I used to be a book snob too ( p.s really no offense or anything) but seriously some of these cheap stalls end up having first editions and they aren't even aware of it .. I found tattered version of Bram stoker- Dracula from one of these @ 200 only and I was pretty much impressed :D
Couldnt agree more.. But don;t want to commit to it. Rather, I think the secret to we catching up with them is 1. Read the 'must reads before you die'.. .. Mark Twain, Fyodor, Tolstoy, Agatha Christie, Salinger, Tolkien, Joseph Heller, etc. One would never feel outta of the place if they have some great books to talk about.
2. I don't believe in reading for the sake of it. A lotta people jst keep scrapping thru the same old college life -romance, vampire stuff books (no offense to any one ). I don't count that as quality reading.
3. Set a target. I think the readers challenge on this Indian Section is damn motivating. I have ordered 6 books in the last 2 months and already done with 3..
Srishti wrote: "@shriya:thanks...thats quite comforting :D"After all us Indians no matter where we live are very friendly :)
@Umang:agree with all 3 points..thanks to goodreads,my reading has become quite disciplined i'd think.@shriya:yes,thats true :)..i'm going hrough your blog..quite nice.u have autorickshaws in UK?i never knew that!

Come to Kolkata once, visit College Street, the concept of STREET BOOKS will change for you, thats for sure. Where else can you get a brand new Mary Higgins Clark hardcover for Rs.75.
My bookwallah, a genteleman named Hasan, has 12 books lined up for me, which I ll collect tomorrow. And, thse would cost me around 800, max 900.
See, my point is buying books from the street has a charm of its own, I have been doing it for last 8 years.
